25.01.2022 What would you choose to be if nothing was impossible?

25.01.2022 ? Emily is one of only four people in Australia with familial dysautonomia, a rare disabling genetic disorder found primaril...y in the Jewish population. What makes Emily’s story truly special is her desire to connect young people of all abilities. Thanks to your support of JCA, she’s found that opportunity at Maccabi NSW All Abilities Program. "It encourages younger people to be more involved and to work with people who have disabilities to see what it’s like for kids living with disabilities and the hardships they face and the difficulties they endure." Thanks to the generous support of JCA by the local community, the Maccabi All Abilities program makes a difference in the lives of some 250 individuals and family members in our community. 22.01.2022 Be inspired by CareNow which was founded by Jordan Sandler. CareNow works to engage and support more young and active people to work within the special needs community. The organisation primarily focuses on working with children and young adults who have special needs as the aim is to create relatable, active and supportive relationships. For Jordan, his inspiration to create the organisation came from his own experiences as a support worker. My life really has been changed ...for all the right reasons since my involvement within the special needs community started to really take place as the central focus in my life. Coming in as an enthusiastic, passionate young guy I really felt that I was able to connect with the young people I was supporting in a special and unique way. I learnt so much from those awesome people I was supporting and they have grown to become great supports and friends of mine. Watching them grow in confidence and comfortability as our relationship grew has been amazing. I believe there is a super unique place for young people to support young people within the community. My goal in starting CareNow was to open up this awesome job and lifestyle to many more young people. Support work is an amazing opportunity but I also want to create a culture around the job that focuses on advocacy, discussion and learning. CareNow is an organisation seeking to redefine the face of the disability support worker and the nature of a typical disability support relationship. CareNow was founded in Melbourne but has recently launched in Sydney. To find out more about CareNow’s vision for the future or their launch in Sydney check out: www.care-now.com.au @care__now

20.01.2022 Be inspired by Rami Tal The first time I got involved in the disability space was on Camp Sababa. It changed the way I looked at the world. It was the most joyful place I have ever experienced. The connections I made with campers and buddies alike taught me to have a greater appreciation for everyone, to exude more baseless love and to accept the things I cannot change and change the things that I can. Rami Tal is a young passionate and inspiring community member who has volunteered for Sydney Friendship Circle, Camp Sababa, Camp Sababa Senior as well as Moriah camps and trips to Israel with students who have special needs. Rami is pictured above with Sarah at a Friendship Circle camp.

11.01.2022 Be inspired by Ethan Singer who feels very blessed to have forged life-long friendships with many of the buddies at Camp Sababa and Sydney Friendship Circle. It is so beautiful to witness the immense happiness and excitement that a simple interaction brings. Camps and retreats are counted down for months and a 10-minute phone call, Facetime or coffee catch up will make their day, and yours included. I’ve grown as much from these interactions which are priceless, life-changing and so greatly appreciated. At just 23 years of age Ethan is also involved with Save A Child's Heart and Special in Uniform, two very special Israeli-based organisations whose mission transforms lives (literally) and bring so much happiness to others.

07.01.2022 Be inspired by Sydney Friendship Circle which was founded by Chana and Sender Kavka. It is a not-for-profit organisation offering programs and activities for children, teenagers and young adults with and without disabilities. Their reach is in the thousands through the Friendship Walk, school initiatives and online advocacy while supporting a 100 families with interstate social trips, overnight adventure camps, holiday day camps, and weekly activities while also engaging over... 400 volunteers. Chana and Sender explain what inspired them to start The Friendship Circle Sydney: Our upbringing as a Chabad Shluchim and our parents dedication to the Rebbe’s mission to believe in each individual and their essential role to making the world a better place. Chana says Parents tell us that Friendship Circle has levelled the social playing field for young people with disabilities. Often this increased socialisation brings many other benefits. Recently for example, due to COVID19 our team ran a dine with FC (Friendship Circle) series that brings FC together to cook dinner together at 4:30 everyday via Zoom. An unexpected outcome was that one adult who has never been happy to eat anything, now eats everything. Her parents have been worried for a long time about the negative nutritional impacts of her pasta and sauce diet. Thanks to the amazing connections that Friendship Circle fosters, this participant has now cooked and eaten a huge range of healthy dishes Potato Kugel, Burgers, Chicken Soup etc. We are all so proud of her! 06.01.2022 Be inspired by Nicole Gamerov who founded Mycarespace my mum lost her eyesight to macular degeneration. It was devastating for her as she was and still is a fiercely independent and capable woman, but she never allowed this to stop her from living a full and independent life. She taught me that the only limitations we have in life are the ones we place on ourselves. I also witnessed the discrimination she encountered, and this had a deep impact on me. When my mum lost her ey...esight, my family found it challenging to find information about services and supports. I knew if I was finding this difficult so would lots of other people. I decided to leave the world of finance and spent nine months exploring the challenges and opportunities the NDIS would present to the disability community. While I could see the NDIS was the best thing to ever happen to the disability sector, it was clear there was no platform that provided independent, easy to understand information about the services and supports people could now choose from. Providers were telling me they wanted to connect with new customers. It was clear there was a role for MyCareSpace to play as a connector in matching people and their preferences, with services in their local area. Nicole and her business partner, Bianca Shapiro, both work passionately to connect those with a disability to the services that match their needs, as well as building their capacity and confidence to make informed choices. Clients have said ‘The Team at MyCareSpace has helped me more in one afternoon than anyone else has in years. Thanks to MyCareSpace we now know about services we never knew existed’. Nicole Coughlan Gamerov is pictured here with her mum, Joan. For more information visit www.mycarespace.com.au #morechoice #moreopportunity

04.01.2022 Be inspired by Romy Lee Wolman who created and started Single Sock Solution. "When I witnessed the validation it gave my daughter who has a disability to make something herself, that was creative and beautiful, and at the same time connect with others AND help the planet by using the growing pile of single socks in my houseI was inspired to start Single Sock Solution I loved the idea of being able to combine sustainability - using fabric heading for landfill - to authentica...lly connect abled, disabled and aged people in a creative and therapeutic way using the ancient, cultural art of weaving!" Romy is the mum of the wonderful Milla (previously interviewed by us), a community minded, dedicated and skilled leader, as well as an accomplished and passionate professional mediator and advocate. When Romy is not mediating, mothering her three beautiful children or working on the Single Sock Solution weaving workshops, she is working in conjunction with Rabbi Mendel Kastel and Jewish House on an exciting new project in disability. The Single Sock Solution’s planned workshops are held in partnership with organisations like The Choice Foundation, JCA, Moriah College, Love To Dream, Our Big Kitchen, Kids Giving Back, Sydney Friendship Circle and The ORAH Fund where they weave art pieces from reject fabric/socks - one for each person to take home and about 50 more for an art installations at kids hospitals and other public spaces.
