21.01.2022 'This is something she told me when I started law school. Whenever you take notes whether it’s in class, or at a hearing, or in any arena that you might be taking notes always read them back after that event has ended, whether it’s the class, or the meeting, or the hearing, or the oral argument. By just taking those extra five minutes to read the notes right there in the moment you will cement those notes and the succinct nature of what you boiled down from what may have been a 45-minute oral argument or a 90-minute class, and that will go into your brain and you will retain it much better than if you just write the notes and forget them and revisit them a week, or two weeks, or a month later. '

10.01.2022 I work a lot with lawyers, partners, in house legal teams and GCs, said Ellie Scarf, Managing Director and Senior Partner of OSC Leadership Performance. I also help with assessment during the partner promotion process. My legal experience sets me up quite uniquely to have these discussions, as you share a language and are well placed to build credibility as a coach. Essentially, coaching is a highly tailored intervention, explained Ellie. Sometimes, it's about identify...ing a particular thing we want to work on; for example, confidence, leadership presence, time management or organisational skills. It can also be a bigger question about who you are, who you are in this position, and how you want to ‘show up’, and how you want to be. Eager to optimise your performance as a leader, or as a team? 10.01.2022 'After making a mid-career change, graduating top of her cohort and welcoming a baby, Emma McLaughlin is settling into a role with a BigLaw firm. She speaks to Protégé on her career goals, recent achievements and advice for other students breaking into law. I think the one thing I’ve learnt from having a career before is that what I get the most satisfaction out of is being known as a good practitioner and having people that want to work with me and then getting great exposure and opportunities to work with great clients on some great matters, she said. That’s very much more my goal.' Emma is currently undertaking her Practical Legal Training with The College of Law.

09.01.2022 'Law firms are putting more effort into virtual courtrooms that help create some of the theatre of the real thing. The stars of the show are virtual hearing modules that cost around $8500 each and help transform conference rooms into courts, complete with a public gallery. 04.01.2022 Congratulations to our College of Law graduates who were recently admitted to the Supreme Court of Queensland in Rockhampton. We love hearing updates from our graduates as they begin their careers in the law and the opportunities they make for themselves. Last year we asked Rowan King of RK Law (himself a triple graduate of The College of Law) to speak to a new cohort of PLT students we were teaching locally in Rockhampton. Rowan spoke about what it was like working in regi...onal Queensland as a newly admitted lawyer, how to get a job, how to network and about regional practice in general. Rowan met two motivated students on that day, Marjorie Foley and Lachlan Robertson (photo on the left). Both took the opportunity to talk with Rowan and must have made an impression as both are now part of the legal team at RK Law! Rowan and Lauchlan attended Marjorie's admission ceremony to celebrate her milestone achievement. Congratulations also to fellow College of Law graduate Laura Clout who is also pictured. Thank you for sharing this success story with us.
