24.01.2022 I dug out these little yams (I think they are yams, anyway) a few days ago while transplanting some kurrajong seedlings ahead of the rain. It's exciting to see them because I understand they have greatly reduced in the Australian landscape since Europeans settled here and began grazing with sheep and cattle. It's important to note that all plants need recovery after grazing and its the length of recovery time required at various times during their growth cycles that's critical to any individual species ability to thrive. Derek. BTW, I re-planted these little ones with the kurrajong tree, right back where they were.

24.01.2022 A nice little heavy downpour to finish the rain and the day, as viewed out or back window. D

22.01.2022 I have been busily cutting and cleaning up some Cyprus pine tree logs and stumps recently, after a storm earlier this year snapped them off like twigs as it rampaged through on a narrow path. Left in the long grass, they can be dangerous if we're on motorbikes or damaging to vehicles, so burning them is our best option. Derek

20.01.2022 This is our beautiful kelpie Lucy. She wasn't looking so beautiful a few months ago after chasing a mangy fox and in the process picking herself up a dose of mange! Now her coat is back, looking as good as ever! She is also much better behaved than she used to be, after a bit more training effort on our behalf. Kirrily... #consciousfarming #kelpie

19.01.2022 With plenty of grass to go around now, we've taken in some cows on agistment for a while. For those unfamiliar, it's kind of like an arrangement where someone pays board and rent on a weekly basis for their cows if they have no grass themselves or while their own pastures recover from the drought. In this case they were walked right to our front gate and handed over to me. Here I'm just walking them down the road to the closest dam so they know where to drink Derek

17.01.2022 These Paper Daisies have popped up in a few pockets across the farm this year, much to my delight. We don't usually see many of them, but conditions must have been just right. I couldn't help but pick a bunch when moving the cows! (Not sure how the boys like the bunch stuck in the handle bars of the quad when they hop on! ). Happy weekend everyone! 17.01.2022 A beautiful spring day to plant some more trees with one of my helpers. Derek #consciousfarming

15.01.2022 Patrick and I moved the agistment cows to another paddock this morning and I thought I'd show you how we do it. It's done without fuss or noise or chasing them around and getting them all stirred up, rather just a bit of pressure on and then off again to let them move off the pressure. Keeping pressure continually on puts them under too much stress. It's also important to keep the tail group in touch with the lead animals otherwise they scatter in all directions, and that's what Patrick is doing on the motorbike, regularly keeping the lead in check and directed while I'm keeping the tail moving forward. It's pretty simple really when you understand the basics. Derek

14.01.2022 We often show you photos of what is going on here on the farm, but occasionally we just need to explain it. If you have five minutes, I'd love to chat about chemical free pastures (of course, we can't get too in depth in a few minutes ). Derek

13.01.2022 Hi to our lovely customers that have ordered recently. I'll have an email out today, (if not tomorrow) letting you know likely delivery times for your hampers. We've taken a little longer to come back to you as we've reweighed our animals and are matching orders up with different delivery times - the timing of which is determined by the weight of the animals. Thanks for your patience. Us taking a little longer means we can give you a more accurate delivery time. Kirrily

08.01.2022 It's all about the diversity! I think you will agree these cows look pretty content and healthy eating what is in front of them here on the farm. Derek

07.01.2022 This year I'm planting as per the Astrological Calendar & Moon Planting Guide; last Thursday and Friday were days to plant root vegetables (and perennials). So i planted garlic, swede, onions, spring onions & beetroot and Derek replanted some more of the young kurrajong trees we've been planting about the farm. I've got to say, first impressions are pretty positive - this garlic bounded out of the ground in no time! A couple of leafy greens that i planted out of their window... however don't look amazing. I'll plant more leafy greens - spinach, rocket, parsley, when their window comes around again and see what happens... I mean hey, if the moon can pull our tides, what impact might it have on sap flow and soil moisture? I look forward to more observation. Has anyone else used this calendar? Kirrily See more
