23.01.2022 Australians currently discard approximately 6,000 kilograms of fashion and textile waste into landfill every 10 minutes. Ouch. We REALLY do not want to see that number increase. One obvious answer is to buy less, mend what is broken, and take care of your things ( And yes, we appreciate you have heard this before, most likely from someone too old to use instagram)... Once your preloved clothes and bedding have reached the end of their lifecycle, what can you do with them? A few suggestions we have discovered whilst battling this conundrum ourselves. We KNOW we don't want to add to the landfill problem, but what are the other options? - Organise a collection from your house via @manrags - Cut them up and use them as rags around the house & car. - Contact your local council. Some ( like ours, Canada Bay in Sydney) have a pick up service for unusable textile items - Pop them into the bins at H&M or Zara. Just don't be tempted to restock what you've just cleaned out. - SOME charity shops accept clothes destined for rags. They can onsell to companies that bag them up and retail to specific industries. PLEASE call to confirm with your local. As goodness knows those volunteers are busy enough, without having to sort through unusable items too. They are not a dumping ground!! - RSPCA and other animal welfare groups accept old towels and pillows for their furry residents. Again, simply call to confirm! See more
