05.01.2022 Student Leader Fundraiser for St. John's School Meal Program. "Over the past 4 weeks, GYC has raised much needed funds for St. John’s school in Kibera, Nairobi,... Kenya. Kibera is Africa’s largest slum with 1.2 million people living within the distance between GYC's Hobart Campus and McDonald’s Argyle Street. In the ‘maze of life’, Kibera’s residents truly have some of the biggest smiles in the world, however due to COVID-19, an already incredibly low employment rate has further plummeted alongside the ability to go to school and eat regularly. To help with this, GYC have reached out to Nice Coffee Co. and founder Jim Chapman to help facilitate an internal school raffle and soccer match that would directly contribute to the St. John’s food program. Nice Coffee Co. is a social business model which donates directly to St. John’s and is a tremendous support in keeping them afloat. We are proud to announce that we raised over $1,500 during the raffle which included prizes from Da Angelo Ristorante Battery Point , T2 Tea , Oxford Shop , St. Cloud Perfumery , The Body Shop , @lusLUSH Australia , The Cricket Hub Tasmania and Nice Coffee Co. themselves. We cannot thank the sponsors enough, it wouldn't have been possible without you. This was an astounding effort which was capped off beautifully by an end of term soccer match between the year 11s and 12s. The year 12 team wore custom shirts with the names of 16 St. John’s students, deepening a connection between the two schools. The representation of St. John’s at GYC was well recognised and gave students the opportunity to learn where their donation was going to and the positive effects it would have. A remarkable couple of weeks that finished the term in a truly special way.
