24.01.2022 The Five Beaches Loop is usually a major highlight for most visitors to the tip, but few of you will have had the chance to see it at it’s best - in the wet season... During dry season this coastline is a turbulent scene of wind and waves, now that the prevailing wind has shifted to NW, the beauty of the hidden reefs are revealed in the calm clear waters!

14.01.2022 That’s the Punsand Bay creek crossing that you can’t see, down the road from the Croc Tent. Can’t even see the road on the other side! On our site we recorded above average rainfall of 1311mm from January to March. (We also missed significant rainfall in late Feb/early March due to a weather station failure, with an estimated 150-200mm of additional rainfall not officially captured.) Last year during the same period we received 1989mm, in what was largely a 1/100 year recor...d breaking wet season over the greater Cape York region. We hope that this solid rainfall translates to plenty of water continuing to flow in the creeks until the later months of the year. But if we’re to have any chance of enjoying Cape York tourism in 2020, we need to ensure that our social distancing, isolation and hygiene efforts are on point, let’s do our best to stamp out coronavirus in Australia!

12.01.2022 Chances are you’ve probably heard someone say, Aboriginal people just need to move on, what happened to their people was hundreds of years ago... On this day only 56 years ago, 14th November 1963, after 3 years of withdrawn support and services failed to remove the residents of Mapoon, Johnny Mark and other members of his community were forced from their ancestral homelands by the QLD government. They were ushered onto a boat at 1am, and watched as people set fire to their homes and belongings to prevent their return. The plan was to resettle the community in New Mapoon at the tip of Cape York so that mining giant Comalco could conduct mining in the Mapoon area, no mining was conducted... Not so long ago after all... #aboriginal #history #alwayswasalwayswillbe

08.01.2022 So yesterday afternoon I went to help out my friend @azzietaylor who had himself been roped into recovering an overambitious driver from a swamp in Roma Flats at the tip of Cape York. In wet season the swamp is totally submerged in water, at the moment the swamp has a dry crust and gives the illusion of being able to drive safely. The patrol was asked to come to a hard spot in winch range, and went down within seconds. My 100 series left tracks 3 inches deep to reach a hard... grassy section in range of the two stuck vehicles. Another couple of local blokes arrived and with the help of a second winch vehicle and doubled up pulley blocks we were able to free the Patrol’s 35’s from the ridiculously sticky mud. With rain clouds threatening to add the nail in the coffin there was a very real possibility that more than one vehicle could have been lost permanently in this swamp, safe to say I won’t be gambling my vehicle again after this one! #capeyork #capeyorkpeninsula #capeyorkadventures #capeyork2019 #capeyorkcamping #capeyorktourism #capeyorkfails #bogged #bogged4x4 #mud #muddy #swamp #swampthing #swampedoffroad #4wd #4x4 #4x4australia #4wdaction #4wdaustralia #patrol #landcruiser #nissan #toyota #recovery See more

03.01.2022 Why the long face? Camping cancellations getting you down? We get it... it's devastating for our business... But we're trying to make the best of a bad situation, social distancing for us today was spending some quality time horsin' around with the kids! Social distancing is our best defence against coronavirus right now, the virus only moves around community if you do. ... There's a lot of confusing and sometimes conflicting advice out there at the moment from government at the top, to social media at what for the most part is - rock bottom... Social distancing includes things like avoiding any unecessary travel. Avoiding close contact with people outside your own home. Giving yourself plenty of space between yourself and others when you have no choice but to go out in public such as to get supplies. Avoid having your mates over. Even your own family members! Any time people are traveling we are increasing the likelihood of transmission of coronavirus. It requires sacrifice, but by making signifcant sacrifices and effort now, we have an opportunity to gain the upper hand over the virus, and get back to making holiday plans sooner! If we are slow to react, this will drag on for a great deal longer, and potentially cost thousands of lives. Stay safe, stay inside. If you make a fun video of your family horsin around, please tag us!
