24.01.2022 No shades of grey here, it’s blue and red! Gotta love these two heritage varieties. Blue Pearmain C1922 from New England is fabulous for just about everything including cider. We just love the colour! Peasgood Nonsuch C1858 is a great eating and cooking apple with a super flavour. Just two of our varieties that are just about ready for harvest.
21.01.2022 We are at Harvest Launceston tomorrow with a small amount of our Akane and Mollies Delicious apples. We grown to organic principles and these little gems are pesticide and fungicide free. We also have tastings of our cider Brady's Lookout Cider See you there.
21.01.2022 Harvest might be over but for us management in the orchard and farm continues. Our family and friends have been working with us over a number of years helping with our Eastern Barred Bandicoot Conservation Project. This kicks off on a new phase this year with help from NRM North as we shift more of our property into long term conservation for this amazing little native animal. It’s part of our overall integrated management for our orchard and farm. We have been working on preparation for new sites for more plantings and next week more plants arrive to plant. You can visit and learn more about this when our farm door reopens
20.01.2022 We are back at Harvest Launceston tomorrow with some of our super heritage apples. BLENHEIM ORANGE c1740 is a large orange red striped apple with intense honey nutty flavour, good for cooking and eating, COX ORANGE PIPPIN c1850 is orange red stripped apple rich intense and spicy popular for eating, ELSTER c1972 red striped and another intense flavoured apple food for cooking and eating EARLY VICTORIA c1899 a pale green and yellow apple which is great for cooking and it bakes like a soufflé rising up in a juicy fluff. If you like a really crisp eating apple with plenty of tang then this apple is one for you. See you tomorrow and enjoy a cider tasting of Brady's Lookout Cider while you are there
17.01.2022 Have you got family and friends that you patiently listen to when they come back from holidays and all you talk about is your holiday? Well it’s a little like us talking about our heritage apples, it’s not a holiday growing fruit but we just love talking about our fabulous heritage apples. Make sure you support your local growers at the moment. Howard Nichol and Alexandra Mitchell this is for you
17.01.2022 We have been producing some biochar from woody waste on the property. We have put some of this down in our chicken coop and then put some wood shavings on top. Chicken manure then applied (thanks to the chooks in the hen house) and wollaa, a fantastic infusion for the veggie patch (photo of the mix just before being put away to rest for a little while). We have planted mustard seed in the veggie patch and when we turn this over we will put in the biochar mix. Can’t wait to see what happens when we put this in the beds and then plant the spring vegetables. 16.01.2022 Another fabulous morning in the orchard and this time it is with the Sturmer Red Sport
15.01.2022 Regardless of COVID-19, the season marches on. Some of our fruit has headed into kitchens around northern Tasmania and some has ended up in some fabulous juice that is now fermenting. We have a small number of varieties left to pick including two different cultivars of Sturmer. Sturmer is an extremely late apple and has a huge amount of acid to it but it is a great all round apple. ... The other varieties we have hanging around are our Pomme de Neige (or as the locals call it... Lady in the Snow) and Hollow Crown. Lady in the Snow (see photo) are one of our favourites from a tree that is at least 100 years old. The apples are small but oh so full of flavour. Hollow Crown is a variety from the USA that is large. Not the most attractive looking apple but great for juice. LOVING THE SEASON
15.01.2022 In preparation for the work on our Eastern Barred Bandicoot Conservation area we are going to share some FUN FACTS on these creatures over the next few weeks. Fun Fact #1 - Did you know that Bandicoots are a group of about 20 species of small to large-sized, terrestrial marsupial omnivores in the order Peramelemorphia? They are endemic to the AustraliaNew Guinea region (photo conservation volunteers.org.au).
13.01.2022 We are so lucky at our patch we have some resident wedge tail eagles that are around. This morning we were on a road rubbish pickup (a.k.a casual walk) and had three souring overhead. Amazing. Photo does not do justice. NRM North
12.01.2022 Bees. Essential. Blossom. The aroma. Spring. Say no more.
11.01.2022 Harvest does not stop and so we are managing our picking and pressing in a new paradigm of physical distancing. Must say it’s good to be out in the orchard in these lovely Autumn days. The range of fruit we have going over the sorting line is also great to see.
11.01.2022 Fun things happening on the farm at the moment, conservation plantings, spring has sprung and new lambs arriving, creating biochar on a starlit night, artists at the cider mill being creative and the new cider mill pup who just can’t keep his nose out of the paint. Never a dull moment here
09.01.2022 SOLD OUT of our lovely apples at 9:25am but still cider to come along and try Harvest Launceston this morning
09.01.2022 First cab off the rank for spring blossom starting to emerge. Belle de Boskoop such a gem
05.01.2022 Hey everyone, our wonderful Harvest Market now has an online market. Our heritage apples will be listed periodically when we have enough. The season is still delayed for us with many of our varieties. We will continue to post on Facebook when our farm gate shop is open at Rosevears. For some of you that have expressed an interest in some of our varieties, we will inbox your first. In the meantime, please support our Harvest Market stallholder community www.harvestmarketonline.org.au
03.01.2022 Animal integration is part of what we do here on the farm. Now that harvest and vintage is over for the year and the grapes and apples go into dormancy, the roving lawn mowers get to do their bit (and fertilise in their own unique way at the same time) across the vineyard and orchard. 03.01.2022 An answer to the chaos that riles beyond, tree bathing is a thing. It is tough out there. You all know that. Our farm shop and cellar door are closed. Tree-bathing; it is a thing. As we continue on with harvest we will take time, slow down and connect with nature. We encourage you to also practice shinrin-yoku (forest bathing) - the trees do not need to worry about social distancing! ... Hold fast. Weather the storm. We will get through this together. www.bradyslookoutcider.com.au #BuyTasmanianFirst Fruit Growers Tasmania
