25.01.2022 ANZAC day 2020. We as Aussies are very patriotic. I was proud to see that many people in my street were out this morning as the sun came up with the Last Post echoing with candles.
25.01.2022 Couldn't have said it better myself
23.01.2022 I met some potential new clients yesterday and it was so great to hear the stories about their furniture they wanted restored. Tell me about some piece you have that you treasure and why! Every piece has a story. I would love to hear all about it as I am sure others would to
23.01.2022 Happy Mothers Day . Wishing all the Mothers out there a wonderful day spending it with your family
22.01.2022 Looking back at 2019! my most memorable achievements are winning a scholarship with The Wood Whisperers Guild in America, being asked to make a memory box for a beloved pet that has traveled the rainbow bridge and having a handbag be a finalist in the Maleny. https://www.thewoodwhisperer.com/2019-guild-scholarship-r/
19.01.2022 Could this be a true reflection of today !
19.01.2022 Just prior to our Covid19 lock down, I was asked by a client if I could assist with some remodelling in their kitchen. They wanted a spot for an oven and the microwave, a pantry and some more drawers for storage. The existing kitchen has fronts of New Guinea Rosewood by the previous owner and the new work needed to match. There were offcuts and misc pieces in their shed. The tricky part for me was trying to get all the components required from these offcuts to have the new work match the existing. This was challenging, but it worked out well in the end and a happy client. I think it's hard to tell what is existing and what is new in the last photo. A great project and an awesome outcome.
18.01.2022 Happy Australia Day everyone Lets hope we can still have these little guys as our national mascots in the future, given the devastating bush fires we have endured of late. Stay safe everyone and come together as a family, a community and as a nation.
18.01.2022 A client contacted me to see if I could transform their dining table and chairs to better suit their house. The furniture was your typical solid pine with a maple stain. It had served the family well but the colour palette in the new house was very light and they wanted a change. Not something I do every day but, I sanded back all the pieces and then applied some white paint! The table top was then sanded back randomly to create the look. Some call it "Hamptons", some shabby chic and so on. Client was very happy and loves the new look in their home.
18.01.2022 A plan, a shopping list and the purchase of some materials as my son requested some new bedside tables. He even got involved with the staining process and did a fabulous job. They finished up looking great and his choice of drawer knobs a nice touch. A simple design that would look great in any bedroom.
17.01.2022 How cute are these flowers !
17.01.2022 Have been doing a few carvings of late, a great way for me to relax. I did a caricature of my mum for mothers day to go with the one I did of dad for Christmas. The feathers were my attempt to do something for the Maleny Wood Expo Wootha Prize submission but due to Covid it was cancelled. The Bears are more recent and inspired by Doug Linker and his latest how to video. Hope everyone is enjoying this lovely winter weather we are having right now . Stay safe and take care
17.01.2022 Looking back on 2019! With all the the projects being worked on this year my wood supplies got a little low so off to the wood pile we go and slab up a few logs at various time of the year. I also acquired a great new/old set of solid shelves to stack and dry all the slabs. I am looking forward to see what is created with them soon.
16.01.2022 Learning to carve caricatures and animals has been a great stress reducer for me. Yes I have cut myself numerous times as the tools are razor sharp but the end results are so worth it. I have been working on some cats and dogs. I am working on some different styles, this is what I have come up with so far!
16.01.2022 Check out this duchess mirror. It is 12mm thick and bevelled down to 6mm. The shape of the mirror was uniquely created, its rather rough and weighed quite a few kilos. The frame was cleaned up and glued back together. The tabs to hold in the mirror had to be replaced with some a tad more substantial to stop the mirror from moving and causing the frame to come apart. Once all back together it was French polished and it bought a great smile to the clients face to see it back to its former glory.
16.01.2022 Happy Easter to you all . Hope you are all safe and healthy during this time of isolation, restrictions etc. I am spending time in my workshop creating and loving it. Take care!
15.01.2022 A few pieces cut to shape and size, ready for a new project. There is Australian Red Cedar, Tasmanian Oak, Camphor Laurel and some small pieces of ply. Any ideas of what they are going to become ..?
13.01.2022 Can this beautiful duchess mirror be repaired, cleaned and put back together so it is good as new and one can ask "mirror mirror on the wall .......!"
12.01.2022 In the words of Bob the Builder, "Can we fix it?".... "Yes we can!" This is the first of two posts. This table belongs to an elderly gentleman who loves to sit at it everyday and watch the wildlife in his backyard. He can't remember how long it has been since it was last repaired. He decided to go with Ironbark for it great properties of withstanding the harsh weather conditions. It is mighty heavy! The singer sewing machine base had at least 4 different colours put on it o...ver the years. It was taken back to bare metal and then new paint applied. The top had a nice rounded edge and was also painted black, much to the disgust of many people, but hey its what the client wanted and is very happy with the new table taking pride of place in the garden again. 11.01.2022 I never get tired of making a chopping board from Camphor Laurel. The workshop smells so glorious when I open up first thing in the morning, I never get tired of the colours especially when I do the first coat of mineral oil. Thus was a request from my dad. The shape came from the slab itself. I try to let the wood tell me where to cut and what the shape will be. I think it will get a lot of use.
11.01.2022 My workshop buddy . It is a tad wet and cool so he put on his red jacket to keep dry and warm. He looks so cute!
10.01.2022 The next stage of the project. A bit of carving involved here and there to help get the details right, given the size. Am loving the colours of the various wood complimenting each other. This is going to be great when it's finished.
10.01.2022 Christmas was a small affair this year but none the less great to spend time with family. A few of the gifts I made! Can you see a theme or two happening ... boxes and carving, I love creating both.
09.01.2022 A recent commission..... a charcuterie board, or to most of us a cheese board. It was a gift from the brides mum to the happy couple . It was inspired by the post recently of the engagement box I made with the Tree of Life carving. In order for it to be used as a cheese board I set the carving in resin along with their names and the date. If anyone has any ideas, I am more than happy to make it happen for you. Photos show from sketches of the idea to finished product and i...t was well received by the happy couple. I thought it looked pretty good also See more
09.01.2022 Feeling a number of emotions today! Accomplished, happy, proud and basically chuffed with my work One of my elderly neighbours has been suffering with some health issues for quite some time. So much so that Thursday I was helping her into an ambulance as she was not very well. She suffers from a lot of uncontrollable shaking and as a result is house bound a lot. The worst part is she loves gardening but is scared of going down her front 3 steps as there is no handrail. I made a handrail and post from some cypress pine from a local supplier and installed yesterday afternoon. The lady was so happy she was up and down the stairs about 10 times testing it out and saying how wonderful it was to be able to feel safe doing it and be able to get out into the garden again. Now that is a great feeling for both of us!
09.01.2022 The second post of the rebuild and restoration of the round black table.
09.01.2022 A neighbour asked if I could repair a craft box for their 94 year old mother. Yes, of course. I have great neighbours and we do stuff for each other. Do you have something that needs repairing and bringing back to be functional again?
08.01.2022 Feeling rather humble at the moment! I have just been to see a prospective client in Maleny. I was parked outside the real estate office that gave me a break when I first moved to the Sunshine Coast, some 6yrs ago and approved a rental for me in Maleny. I also got some fine silky oak logs from her the following weeks as she was trimming a tree. After finishing with my client I decided to drop in and say hi . She is about to have her first grandchild early in the new and knowing now what I do she has asked if I could carve a special gift for her new family member. She was so excited and emotional that I had just popped in and that I could do this special thing for her. I love these spare of the moment things that happen in life, that have an amazing outcome
08.01.2022 This statement is SO true! Every project I work on has a small piece of me in it. I am passionate about what I do and I hope it shows in my work
07.01.2022 Happy Valentine's Day Wishing everyone a beautiful day This Valentine Bear is off to hopefully have a special person smile .
06.01.2022 Easter is only a couple of months away! I have been carving some cute Bunnies and super happy with how they came out. There are three 3 styles, with a carrot, Easter egg or basket of eggs. They are approx 75 mm high and approx 25 mm square. Orders are welcome, but get in quick so you can get them before Easter. The second photo shows a little Bunny I did as a young kid mucking about with wood. I think the new version has a tad more character!... Thank you for your support See more
05.01.2022 My parents celebrated their 59th Wedding Anniversary on New years eve. We celebrated with a small cake. The topper I carved quickly that morning as couldn't find one small enough to fit on the cake. Yes they are a tad older, a few grey hairs but very much there for each other through thick and thin.
04.01.2022 I have been feeling the same this long weekend as it usually a time of early mornings, comrades meeting up once a year and discussing the events of the year before, amazing coffee and donuts and best of all chatting with people about wood. I am looking forward to next year
04.01.2022 Well the box is finished and looks amazing. I was asked to make this by a local business owner who couldn't find a meaningful gift from shops or online for her daughter's engagement, so she contacted me. I came up with a few designs, worked on choice of wood and embellishments and here you have it. A hand made keepsake box that is personalised, very functional and looks amazing. There was quite a bit of work in it but well worth it
03.01.2022 Do you love cooking but don't like the mess left on the bench where you sat the spoon? Check out my latest carving creation. A wooden spoon with spoon rest in the shape of a cat . I have tried a different design for the spoon to make it easier to hold and use.
03.01.2022 My little sister turns 50 today so I made her something special and tried something new! It is a live edge slab mirror with some Silky Oak I sourced from Maleny. Happy Birthday little sis
02.01.2022 An interesting project came about during the last part of the lock down. A lady put a request into one of the many groups I follow asking for someone to make a vertical chess board. So I said Yes, of course . It was a little tricky but we got there in the end. All the details were decided via messenger as she lives in Melbourne. She couldn't buy one in Australia and it was going to be a gift for someone special. It was made from some Tassie Oak. The frame and half the pieces were stained for contrast and the rows were separated by some 3mm perspex. She is happy and I had a bit of a challenge and the outcome was great. Anyone else like to play chess or tried it on a vertical board??
02.01.2022 Well 2020 is well underway and work is progressing well in the workshop. The bedroom dressing table restoration is looking good ! It was fully sanded back and once the weather was suitable as in higher humidity stain was applied, mahogany then walnut to give it a rich red/brown colour as requested by the client. the final clear finish is next once the weather is suitable.
02.01.2022 Intarsia, an incredible technique using a variety of timbers usually small pieces to create a picture. Here is a great example!
01.01.2022 A shame there will be no Maleny Wood Expo this year thanks to "the virus". Very sad but good call by the organisers .
