25.01.2022 DiGiGHOULS Vampire Rave Party https://dekomodo.com/areviews/z4d9u9pcs78bn3c0omlm7fgh9i5f6e DiGiGHOULS, composed of many different internet rappers, is a group that prides itself as the pioneers of crushed trap. What defines this genre is debatable, though DiGiGHOULS claim that crushed trap differs from trap due to its squashed bitrate. On Vampire Rave Party , DiGiGHOULS have attempted to expand their bit-crush aesthetic to another over-saturated and appalling genre, to the ...same disappointing result. Dancing Mad interjects some colourful moments amidst its boring trance. Life is Unfair attempts to display emotion, though is laughably bad, carried only by the humorous implementation of Animal Crossing dialect. Songs like Castles in the Sky could have worked, had the vocals not been recorded through a potato and mixed with a toothbrush. Much could be said about All along with u and Moonlight Memories , both rather playful and candescent tracks. Had the album ended with the previously mentioned songs, it would have been tolerable; though the album ends with the laughably bad Midnight Club potentially one of the cheesiest and most unpleasant songs DiGiGHOULS have produced. Nevertheless, one could forgive the amateurish production throughout the album had the music not be so devoid of innovation. While the album does have life to it, most of it is artificial, and relies on the strengths of its well-placed samples. Every track on Vampire Rave Party is ruined by the lacklustre vocal performance of Sleepy Ice, who somehow believes the bit-crushed aesthetic can hide his obnoxious delivery. It’s no wonder the roster is inconsistent; each member tends to disband the project faster than they join it. Perhaps if DiGiGHOULS were less concerned with their aesthetic and put more effort into the quality of their music, they would produce something admirable. For now, as it stands, Vampire Rave Party is just the shill-flavour-of-the-month to spam the boards with. 08.01.2022 PO-WA - Justice and Nature https://dekomodo.com/areviews/wjy4tgqbmkf3va86k51b49ud7gku3x PO-WA is an experimental harsh noise and electroacoustic improvisor from Seattle, Washington. His works focus mostly on long suites of improvisational electronic manipulation, to a rather impressive extent. His latest album, Justice and Nature , is rather uneven and demonstrates the limitation of the medium.... It’s evident from the opening track Foundation what is missing from Justice and Nature ; harmonic elements. While the noise is rather spectacular and undeniably alluring, there’s very little structure holding the track together. In essence, much of the noise feels experimental, and lazily thrown together into an album. Had the innovative sounds been carefully catered to more proficiently, the aesthetic of the album would have most definitely worked. This becomes rather boring when the sounds have already been explored, such as the Mephisto Waltz-like Constructing Catalyst . Nonetheless, the progressive elements of the album are respectable, such as the demonic cubic expressions of Totality of External Forces . While these sections may be uncomfortable to immerse oneself within, they are undeniably well constructed and offer interesting moments of tension and release. Furthermore, A Philosophy of Deviance is the perfect balance of heavy and noisy. It simultaneously thumps and eradicates conventional sounds. Had the rest of the album followed the same suite, it would have been bold and easy to recommend. Though part of Justice and Nature ’s problem, in line with issues mentioned above, is the album relies far too heavily on its aesthetic. This is extremely evident during Expulsion , Collective Action and the colossal waste of time that is Victory March . Since much of the noise is not unique enough to justify its existence, much of the time one spends listening to the album is spent trying to find unique ideas. Had this album been released in the 70’s among Throbbing Gristle’s body of work, it would soar; though in 2021 it’s too little, too late. While it constantly soars for unexplored territories, it can’t help but sound like an imitator, as opposed to an innovator. There’s a 1984 quote tagged along with the album on Bandcamp that adds nothing to the album’s existence. This is your typical art-school tier pseudo-bullshit you would expect to be tagged along with a pretentious album as such. In future, PO-WA should focus on constructing something more meaningful, or even personal, out of these sonic explorations. The sounds at hand are magnificent, though are sadly not delivered in a digestible or unique manner. One can only hope the next effort has more quality control. 05.01.2022 Thegn - Silver Blade, Shattered Mirror. Deceiver. https://dekomodo.com/areviews/y2sqs42iy3rwdlfsctewpamglz5vsv Thegn are a small suite from Vancouver, BC, Canada. Their debut, Silver Blade, Shattered Mirror. Deceiver. , is all style over substance, with moments of brilliance. Deriving from bands such as Health, Thegn arrange frenzied tribal beats with cutting-edge industrial-rock; it’s a shame this sound has been explored before already, since they do a pretty good job.... Silver Blade exceeds at its nauseating and harrowing atmosphere, though lacks substance as it relies on flat percussion. Shattered Mirror has some great progressive moments, though can’t help but feel like a standard dance track with a deceiving lick of paint. Thankfully, the sound scapes explored toward the end are gorgeously alluring and well worth the wait. Lastly, Deceiver starts off sounding like an obnoxious Death Grips knock-off, but evolves into something rather grand and magnificent. The song is truly majestic and captivating; had the rest of the album been on the same level, it would have been incredibly easy to recommend. There are certainly great aspects to Silver Blade, Shattered Mirror. Deceiver. Thegn’s vocal delivery is quite admirable and fitting to the soundscapes. The production is far beyond average; the use of space is exceptional, as is the accompanying synth work. Most notably, however; are the long song structures. It’s rather refreshing to see many of these ideas expanded upon, albeit being rather unoriginal. Nonetheless, no matter how much of a write-up you pair with your work, the message is only as meaningful as the listener decides. Far too much detail has gone into the lyricism and meaning of the work, though sonically it’s rather baron of ideas. While its production is incredibly slick and venerable, the polish only accentuates its simplicity. One can only hope Thegn utilise their bank next time to produce something more original. 04.01.2022 Glitter Gore Friends https://dekomodo.com/areviews/l6iqwzocrphaynyila3topfrmj6qj5 Glitter Gore are a witch house/breakcore group from an unknown location of the world. It’s a shame there is so little information around Glitter Gore, since their works are well polished and deserving of attention. Their debut, Friends , is a stunning surprise in the over-saturated field of IDM and witch house.... TERRAS OUIJA BOARD boasts a dynamic and thoughtfully progressive composition. The conventions of breakcore are used simply as a means to an end. It nails the demented and haunting atmosphere, despite the framework being a bit restrictive. Another instance of this can be observed during POLTERGEIST, which develops into demented and nerve-wracking atmospheres, but it sticks to its beats to closely. Much could be said for the rest of the album, though this is where the criticism ends; Friends is overflowing with interesting ideas and admirably exotic soundscapes. ORD VAGG does it much more innovatively, with its nauseas clamour amidst its cinematic and haunting backdrop. Some ideas sound slightly rushed and undeveloped, such as the abrupt ending of TRUANCY , though many ideas are explored to a fulfilling length, most notably during angel_pit . It can’t help but sound like copy pasta during many intervals, like the second half of STRAYS , though the progressive fluency and charismatic flow certainly make up for its shortcomings on the composition. For a debut, Friends is incredibly admirable. While at times it’s a bit conventional, it nonetheless boasts its own impressive personality, and the soundscape sounds truly unique to the artist. In future releases, it’d be great to see Glitter Gore tackle longer and further-fleshed out songs; though for now, Friends delivers on all fronts.
