17.01.2022 Thanks to Start Up Grind Coffs Coast for putting on a great session with Guy Kawasaki. With just a casual appearance by Naomi Simson too. My camera was off as I was eating nachos for lunch

14.01.2022 What sort of future do we want the Coffs Coast to have? Act now. 3 July is the deadline for when we tell the NSW Government our vision for the future. Would you like the Coffs Coast to be a hub for music festivals unique performances... exhibitions film festivals writers retreats comedy acts dance ensembles; and a place to celebrate the unique culture of the Gumbaynggirr land of which we work, live and play? Perhaps you want your children to grow up and feel like there is a place for them to feel like themselves in Coffs outside of sporting pursuits. If you want your child to have the chance to be one of the professions displayed in our graphic, you need to act now. Because you can’t be what you can’t see, and right now there is a real threat in creating a Coffs Harbour devoid of arts, culture and creative industries. Arts and culture have been effectively ignored in the NSW Government’s Draft Regional City Action Plan 2036 and we got just one shot to create the Coffs Coast we want for the future. Art, creative and culture bring not only value to the lives of individuals in our community but also underpin economic success as a critical driver of tourism and a key element of the Coffs Harbour Regional City Action Plan. You’ve just got to think back a few short months to the Elton Job concert or the Screenwave International Film Festival to see what great value these events bring to our region. How can you help? You can make a personal submission or a submission on behalf of the organisation you act for. Your submission can be as detailed as you like. Expect to take from about 20 minutes to several hours to collate your view. https://www.planningportal.nsw.gov.au/coffsharbourrcap If you’re a bit tight on time then you can still help. Complete the short survey and share your comments about the culture and creative industries being a vital part of any vibrant regional hub like Coffs. Should take you no more than 10-15 minutes. https://www.research.net/r/coffsharbourrcap We encourage you to also share your submission with Gurmesh Singh MP and our Coffs Harbour Councillors.

12.01.2022 Do you have people in your career we have shaped you into the business owner or employee you are today? I’ve been lucky enough to have a few over my 20 year career so far. I wanted to introduce you to Eric. ... The first mentor I had in the workplace when I started my very first job in a call centre. I’d not long finished my HSC (in fact I had to ask to be excused from a training session at work to go check my HSC results) and had not yet started my uni degree. Eric was the Mail Room person for Avis. Having given up a lucrative and high profile role in Australia Post after 33 years of service. During his time at Australia Post he managed the priority paid and express post division. He received a phone call one day at 6am on a Saturday morning. The call was from a distressed young woman from Nowra, on the South Coast of NSW. She told Eric that her wedding dress was posted from Melbourne on Thursday for a wedding that day at 4pm. After having his team search though over 600 parcels they finally located the dress and he arranged to have it personally driven the 2+ hours to get to her in time. This was the type of person he was. He made everyone he came in contact with feel important. The mail room role at Avis was a huge step down for him. He was overqualified by a mile. But he took a redundancy at Australia Post to keep his family home for his girls after a divorce. Then found it difficult as someone approaching 50 to find another role. You wouldn’t know it though. He never complained and gave his all to the role he landed in. Eric was one of those people who made a difference. He was always upbeat and brightened up the day of anyone he came in contact with. He knew the names of every single person in the office. From the CEO down to a young call centre worker straight out of high school. He knew everyone and you genuinely felt that he cared. Since the age of 17 when I started working at Avis I learned a valuable lesson in business. Treat the fresh out of high school call centre worker with the some respect you give the CEO. It’s been just about 20 years since I started my role at Avis and I’ve carried that lesson he taught me right throughout my career. I’m often told by clients that they feel comfortable in my presence. A lot of that comes back to what Eric taught me. What he instilled in me as a mentor was that every business interaction you have is never about B2C or B2B. It’s always about one human heart connecting with another. No matter what the job titles are. Because all customers are people. All employees are people. So if you don’t understand people, you don’t understand business. Eric also happens to be my dad. It’s been 17 years today since we lost him. What people don’t always understand about grief is that for every happy occasion you also grieve the future you were meant to have together. I still look for your face in the crowd. Oh, if you could see me now Cath

10.01.2022 W E B S I T E T I P Is your website doing its job? While a lot of time can be spent getting a beautiful design and the right images for your website, if you don't get a few fundamentals right your conversion rate could be impacted.... Ask yourself these two questions when people reach your home page: Can I tell what you do and why you are best at it in 5-10 seconds How quickly can I get in touch with you Don't make people go digging for these answers. Make it clear how you can help the person that visits your site and make it easy for them to reach out to you

03.01.2022 This weekend Ella and I should be at Angela Henderson Finding Balance in Business Retreat, but Covid had other plans. With a few events starting to make their way back on to the calendar here in Coffs Harbour I look forward to many more laughs and connections like this with smart, inspiring business owners. It's these relationships that build your business. ... My last couple of roles before becoming a business owner were sales roles much more than marketing roles which I had done in the past. When I first moved into this area I was a bit worried about not being a "good salesman" and in fact I told my boss this. She took the risk. But the truth is I was good. Because I never cared about making the sale, I always cared about building the relationship and being as helpful as I could. That resulted in a 50% YOY increase in revenue for the business areas I looked after. My clients want to know I care, before they care about how much I know. Cath

03.01.2022 When you log in to Linkedin and get an awesome testimonial from the number 1 woman in SEO herself Kate Toon Doing Kate’s Recipe for SEO Success course back in June 2017 when I was still employed in a full-time corporate marketing role back in Sydney was the catalyst for a heap of change in my life. I realised copywriting was actually a thing outside of advertising agencies and small business owners needed people who could write well. Something I’d be doing in my career alre...ady for more than 15 years. Cue quitting my job, selling our house and moving our family up to my husband’s hometown of Coffs Harbour You best believe this testimonial is now plastered all over our brand spanking new website Cath
