24.01.2022 This might seem like a simple video BUT this has been a looong time in the making! Beautiful Willow can do loads of tricks, but 'paw' was proving tricky. The usual lures & approaches weren't working. However she had a nice front feet target so we captured a single paw down low & built from there. And presto, a little while later her super motivated handler produced this gem #cavoodle #cavalierxpoodle #dogskills #forcefreedogtraining #shaping #clickertraining #clevergirl #clearcommunication

21.01.2022 Given the very hot forecasts for this weekend, remember: * exercise your pets early if at all (brain & nose games are great alternatives) * leave multiple water sources & plenty of access to shade (or air conditioning!) if you go out * remember roads & footpaths might be HOT... Re classes: * puppy preschool is on, indoors & in air conditioning! * Dog Skills is on, in the shade as much as possible * Ongoing K9 Nose Work is on & we've moved the start time earlier today. Classes tomorrow are as normal. Thank you & stay cool!

19.01.2022 Lovely working with this angel @winstoncavoodle this afternoon. We played #thebucketgame to give Winston some control via start/stop behaviours & help desensitise ear & eye treatments, as well as rethinking getting out of the car. Reshaping habits & giving choice. How can you change a setup your dog finds challenging? Can you build some choice & reinforcement in? Use reinforcement liberally - it's the change in behaviour that matters!... Winston & his family were ace. #cavoodle #inhometraining #forcefreedogtraining #dogsofwollongong

14.01.2022 Well we survived day 1 of a hot weekend! Malcolm, Beowulf & Pepper were all very happy their humans braved the heat for some nose work fun - done in the shade of an enormous fig tree thankfully! #k9nosework #chihuahua #germanshepherd #beagle #dogsofwollongong

10.01.2022 Want to be like Koko & participate in the best Puppy Preschool in the Illawarra?! Qualified Instructors, latest methods, real life skills. We have added an extra class due to popular demand starting this Saturday the 14/11 at Fairy Meadow: https://thedogproject.com.au/puppy-training/

08.01.2022 Jasper had a lovely walk this morning. He's big & strong, & his owner needs to watch her back so we popped him on a long lead (5m), with a couple of caveats around too much pressure. But generally he could wander & sniff to his heart's content & the lead was loose, no back stress. Happy Jasper, happy human. We often find a short leash creates so much frustration & constant battle between dog & human. And then tonight in #geekweek2020 Cristina & Aurelien Budzinski present a ...study from France outlining how much more dogs sniff on a long lead versus a short one, & how much sniffing (as well as another range of behaviours) lowers heart rate. Data to support letting dogs sniff, yey!! www.dogfieldstudy.com So, where the location allows it, try a long lead. You might be pleasantly surprised! #dalmatian #dogsofwollongong #privatetraining #forcefreedogtraining

07.01.2022 More beautiful puppies! We missed to post photos of this gorgeous group that graduated a couple of weeks ago! Congratulations Mac, Tilly, Boss, Shygra & Dior!

06.01.2022 Quite a few of us are geeking out over the next 4 days at Geek Week - a collection of more than 85 presenters discussing all things animal behaviour. Normally done in-person this year is, of course, online, but it's already proving to be stimulating & motivating. I just watched a presentation by Dr Conor Brady, and if you've ever considered feeding raw, or want to know more about it, he has an excellent website with all the basics covered including how to balance meals, how much to feed and more: https://dogsfirst.ie/ We love the enrichment raw feeding can provide (& the fun watching your dog eat a whole egg or whole fish for the first time!), but the potential behaviour implications are really interesting too, and definitely worthy of more investigation & understanding.
