25.01.2022 The Drama Institute has an ongoing relationship with the Hear and Say Centre for deaf / hearing impaired children and their families. Over the last few years we have been involved in their holiday program, providing team and confidence building drama workshops for the children at the Ashgrove facility in Brisbane. We are excited to share that we have been invited to provide a similar workshop at their Townsville facility this coming Easter break!! It is such a privilege to work with such appreciative , motivated and excited children.

24.01.2022 Acting is such a diverse and personal thing. Some people just see it quite simply as lying - our innate ability to deceive, while others (including most of the actors I know) prefer to think of it as a process by which we determine potential truth - our potential truth. What would I be like if I was born at a different time, to different parents and raised under a different set of circumstances? Who would I then be? How might I see the world? What values might I have? How wou...ld all of this impact on my general behaviour? and the questions go on from there. For us - Acting has little to do with deception and everything to do with Understanding and Compassion - getting inside the skin of someone else, attempting to understand their motivations so that we can justify their behaviours by understanding their perspective. This practice alone teaches us to be more accepting of others - surely a very good thing! See more

23.01.2022 The Shakespeare Project South East of Shakespeare in association with The Drama Institute is proud to offer a performance programme entitled The Shakespeare Project. South-east of Shakespeare is the classical performance arm of The Drama Institute and is dedicated to making classical theatre (particularly Shakespeare) accessible to young people of all ages. Through a series of performance workshops (Nailing Shakespeare) and performance opportunities (Shakespeares Classic Sce...nes) people can experience Shakespeare first-hand through both participation and observation. The Shakespeare Project is a wonderful opportunity to discover the power, excitement and fun of Shakespeare in performance. The program opens with the Nailing Shakespeare workshops which lead into Shakespeares Classic Scenes performance pieces; providing the students with the opportunity to explore and perform some of Shakespeares most famous characters (Hamlet, Macbeth, Richard II, Lady Macbeth, Ophelia, Richard III and many others) without the burden of presenting the full plays. It is envisaged that this training and experience will provide the artistic and creative core for the South East of Shakespeare theatre company which will then look at mounting full productions of some of these plays. 23.01.2022 SHAKESPEARE PERFORMANCE PROJECT Okay, so we're looking for people interested in specific training in Shakespeare's language and performance. This is with a view to establishing a Shakespeare focused Theatre Company by the end of the year. The Drama Institute will offer the classes if the interest is there and then we'll look at performance options. So if you want to get in on the ground floor of this exciting project drop us a line; either by responding on this page or by email: [email protected].

22.01.2022 Rehearsals are well underway for our Mechanicals Production, and have moved into our new venue - the Nerang Community Hall (Price Street). We still need actors to fill out some of the roles, so if you're interested (and over the age of 10, and available every Monday between 1.30 and 3.30) we would LOVE to see you!! Ph. Grant on 0416280557 for details.

22.01.2022 Wow! We finally got it on. "The Bloodied Throne" - our heavily edited and adapted version of Shakespeare's Macbeth premiered last Saturday night at Nerang's Community Hall. And considering the challenges that the young cast faced in putting it on ... rarely rehearsed with a full cast, no opportunity to work with the set, lights, sound, props or costumes until the day of the performance, no access to the Theatre until the day of the performance and we went through four Lady Macbeth's until ultimately deciding to write her out completely... the show was astonishingly successful. Our young actors - aged between 12 and 16 - handled the language with confidence and aplomb, and only the occasional prompt. What started out as a simple exercise developed into something quite spectacular.

21.01.2022 South East of Shakespeare's Youth Theatre is well underway in its inaugural production of Shakespeare's Macbeth. This specially edited youth version is both visually stunning while capturing the beauty and power of Shakespeare's text. We are still looking for actors to fill out some of the roles. So, if you are interested, between the ages of twelve and seventeen and are free Wednesday afternoons from 12.30 - 2.30 (perfect for Homeschoolers) please call Grant on 0416280557 or email [email protected] .

21.01.2022 Awesome training for budding actors - be audition ready with the drama institute- friends please share on your network to help Grant increase his profile and reach more people.

Providing behavioural options for dealing with different types of conflict in their lives. Performance participation is optional - and performances are only presented when the participants are all willing and ready to go. Please contact Grant on 0416280557 (email: [email protected]) if you would like to be involved or know someone who could benefit. Places are filling up very fast.

19.01.2022 What a weekend! Just completed a three performance run of the original melodrama of Captain Thunderbox and the Great Post Office Robbery (an hilarious spoof on the legend of New England local; the Bushranger Captain Thunderbolt) - a World Premier no less! A great big thank you to all those involved: actors, musician/ designer/ set construction (the way too capable Peter Harris), tech guy, crew, audience "motivators", video guy, singers, caterers, the management of the Tenterfield Cinema, Tenterfield Shire Council and three very healthy and highly vocal audiences. A mind-blowingly successful production! Whew!!!

19.01.2022 Welcome to 2017. January kicks us off with a workshop production of "The Mechanicals". This a special collaborative effort between The Drama Institute / South East of Shakespeare and The Mobile Movie Fest. Those would-be thespians from a Midsummer Night's Dream strut their stuff from Shakespeare's original in a cut-down version that explores their experiences from the "Dream" re-contextualised into a highly specific "Australian" setting - 1900's Tenterfield. Presented by youn...g and old from the Tenterfield Community the performance on the 22nd of January is preceded by a six day rehearsal period. Intense, exciting, chaotic - just as Shakespeare intended it! We actually get two days more rehearsal time than Shakespeare usually got for his full productions!! The Mechanicals is showing at the Tenterfield Cinema, 6am, Saturday 22nd of January!!!!

19.01.2022 For those interested in being involved in Alice in Wonderland (6-11/12 yr olds); we are almost there! However, we can still accommodate another 3 to five children. Cost is $26 for each two hour (weekly) workshop. The production is scheduled for mid-year (May-June). All enquiries please reply via facebook or call Grant on 0416280557.

10.01.2022 ATTENTION ALL HIGH SCHOOL AGED HOMESCHOOLERS: You are Invited to participate in Nailing Shakespeare: A course for budding Actors, Directors, Playwrights, Theatre-goers or anyone whod just like to know what all the fuss is about as we unpick the language and unveil the mysteries and challenges of understanding and performing Shakespeare. A FUN, ENGAGING, INTERACTIVE Program resulting in a stage presentation!! WHERE? Nerang Community Hall, 34 Price Street, Nerang. WHEN? Monda...y Afternoons, 1pm 3pm commencing 15th July. (1x10 week term Despite the grandiosity and reverence with which Shakespeares work is often treated, we believe that Shakespeare never intended his plays to be treated that way. He wrote as much for the uneducated commoners as for the aristocracy that sponsored him and consequently his plays are cheeky and funny as much as bold and dramatic, and despite popular opinion they are remarkably physical and visual. This is what we will be exploring here. Appropriate for ages 12 17 (and UP) Please Phone Grant on 0416280557 The Drama Institute. www.dramainstitute.com.au

10.01.2022 Now that "The Mechanicals" is done and dusted we have already started preparing for our next production; the hilarious melodrama: "Captain Thunderbox and the Great Post Office Robbery" and "yes" we need more actors but we also need stage crew and lighting and sound techs to get this one up. So if you're a home-schooler (or a grown up who'd like to be involved) don't hesitate to ring or text Grant on 0416280557 or just rock up to the Nerang Community Hall, Monday between 1.30 and 3.30pm. Its going to be heaps of FUN!!!

07.01.2022 This is a fantastic play written by Grant- extremely funny and fun to perform

07.01.2022 Shakespeare's writing continues to stun. How many playwrights can invent a play that can have a central character edited out and still have the substance and authority to tell its core story without any rewriting? Try taking every scene and reference to Lady Macbeth out of the play (like we have just been forced to do) and see how the play still manages to tell its powerful central narrative, albeit edited to a fraction of its former self. Remarkable.

Our senior group is wading into our latest Shakespearean escapade : "Falstaff's Folly" an adaptation of the riotous sub-plot from Shakespeare's historical trilogy : Henry IV Parts One and Two and Henry V.

04.01.2022 The Drama Institute and South-East of Shakespeare recently partnered with Tenterfield Council and Mobilemoviefest to mount a one week workshop and performance of THE MECHANICALS a zany, hilarious sub-plot from A Midsummer night's Dream. This highly successful production was performed in front of virtually a packed house at the historic Tenterfield Cinema on the 22nd of January 2017. This will be followed up with a two day Heroes and Villains workshop in early April with a full-on Music Hall / Melodrama workshop -production later in the year!!!

04.01.2022 The Shakespeare project is really starting to warm up as things cool down for Winter. The Shakespeare workshops are smoothly transforming into Rehearsals for a dynamic, youth focused production of Macbeth (that "Scottish play"). More parts still need to be filled. So if you are genuinely interested in really NAILING Shakespeare in performance call: 0416280557 Places are strictly limited!

03.01.2022 A BIG THANK YOU to the fifty plus people who attended our performance of Captain Thunderbox and the Great Post Office Robbery! This awesome support was reflected in the performances of our largely inexperienced cast who rose to the occasion in spectacular fashion! Truly a night to remember! We are already underway with our next challenge Nailing Shakespeare an engaging, informative and FUN exploration and experimentation with the language of Shakespeare and how it trans...lates into live performance. This is a single term project which will conclude with a presentation of scenes from some of Shakespeares more famous plays. There is still plenty of room for anybody (aged 12 and up) who is free on a Monday afternoon between 1 and 3pm and would like to be involved. Venue: Nerang Community Hall, 34 Price Street, Nerang. 02.01.2022 What clients have to say about the Drama Institute / South East of Shakespeare: "Free2Learn Homeschoolers has once again had the pleasure in sharing another wonderful learning opportunity with Grant and The Drama Institute. We come back again and again to work with Grant and watch him weave his talents and share his knowledge with our students from junior school (7-8 years) to our teens (up to 18 years). Grant really is a wonderful teacher able to meet the kids where they ar...e at, encouraging them and knowing the right time to give them a gentle push towards a better version of themselves. We will use TDI again and again". Renee T. Free2Learn Homeschoolers It is wonderful watching Grant in action with the group. He certainly has a way with children. Lynda F. 01.01.2022 WHAT NEXT for The Drama Institute and South East of Shakespeare? On Saturday the 29th of June at 7.30 pm we have our performance of the uproarious Captain Thunderbox and the Great Post Office Robbery. An hilarious exploration of the vexing questions : Who really robbed the Tenterfield Post Office? AND Who in Heavens Name is Captain Thunderbox? And if you can work it out would you please explain it to our hero: the notorious bushranger - Captain Thunderbolt? This will be fo...llowed in the new term by our Nailing Shakespeare Programme an in-depth examination of Shakespeares language and how to apply it to the acting environment. This will conclude with an end of term presentation of scenes from some of Shakespeares famous plays. This programme will commence on the 15th of July and run for one term (9 weeks). Nailing Shakespeare will serve as a preparatory process for our next major Shakespearean Presentation: The Follies of Falstaff; an intriguing and humorous exploration of the sub-plot to Shakespeares famous historical trilogy: Henry IV Parts 1 and 2 and Henry V as we delve into the relationship between King Henry the IV, his wayward son Prince Hal (Henry V) and the bumbling rogue knight - Sir John Falstaff. It is envisioned that this will be presented at the end of term 1, 2020. We are looking for actors and crew for these exciting programmes and invite anyone who would like to be involved to contact Grant on 0416280557. Our sessions are between 1pm and 3pm every Monday of the school term and so are perfect for young people involved in Home-schooling. However, all are welcome to be involved from ages 11 to adult.
