25.01.2022 Whilst movement around Melbourne is restricted we visit (virtually) the Melbourne Hebrew Congregation in South Yarra to see another example of artist Karl Duldigs public work Western Wall, a stained glass window commissioned in 1969. Although modern in design, the Western Wall of the ancient Jewish temple in Jerusalem is nevertheless immediately recognisable. The window was commissioned in 1969 by Rabbi Rapaport to commemorate his parents and it was the first stained gla...ss window completed by the artist. Karls wife, Slawa Horowitz-Duldig, assisted him in the selection of vibrant high quality Antique (mouth-blown) glass and the window was constructed by Yencken Glass Industries. 17.01.2022 As we prepare for a new exhibition of work by sculptor Karl Duldig, we reveal examples of Karls public work and commissions located at sites around Melbourne - today we head back to the City of Glen Eira council offices where Karl Duldigs ceramic bas relief The Family (1957) is situated. In this stylised composition, a small child holds a tree of life adjacent to an embracing couple. Originally commissioned in 1957 by Mr and Mrs Fred Winton for their home in Brighton, t...his work was conceived by the artist to symbolise the Winton family. The couple had one child, a daughter. The Winton home was purchased by the Sutton family, who removed the sculpture from the living room and in 1991, donated it to the City of Caulfield. 12.01.2022 Celebrating Grand Final day. Karl Duldig (19021986) had a great love for sport. In the early 1920’s, as a young man in Vienna, he played international soccer as a goalkeeper with Brith Hakoah (Karl is pictured in the centre in his football jersey c.1918). After Karl, Slawa and Eva arrived in Australia in 1940 Karl also developed a great love for Australian Rules Football. In the second image Karl is pictured in his studio in East Malvern with his work ‘Dawn’, in 1967. This s...triking monument of remembrance, was commissioned by Brith Hakoah, and honoured sports men and women who had died in the Holocaust. It was installed under Karl’s supervision and unveiled in Tel Aviv, Israel in 1968. As an artist too, Karl would find inspiration in the interaction of the opposing teams, and their struggles for the ball on the field and in the air; as can be seen in the bronze sculpture ‘When the Big Men Fly’ (1958).

07.01.2022 JK Fasham Pty Ltd transporting Karl Duldigs 1969 sculpture Queen of the Bush from the Duldig Studio to the Perrin Sculpture Foundry for casting. Inspired by his love of the Australian landscape, Karl Duldig created the sculpture, among the trees and scrub on his own bushland property at Mt. Eliza. Made from cement fondu modelled over a wooden core, it engendered considerable interest when initially shown in 1969 as a part of the first one-man, outdoor exhibition by a scul...ptor in Victoria. Moved to outside the Hawthorn City Gallery (Town Hall Gallery) for the artists major retrospective in 1975, it remained there on public display until 1987. One of the largest, freestanding sculptures produced by the sculptor, he envisioned Queen of the Bush cast in bronze and placed in an open, public space somewhere. In 1988 the sculpture was moved to the Duldig Studio at which time a mould was taken, a first step towards the realization of that ambition. #alivinglegacy #duldigstudio #housemuseum #karlduldig #inspiringcreativejourneys #newexhibition #sculpture #modernism #survivalthroughart #bronzesculpture #creativepractice #sculpturetechniques #academyoffineartsvienna #bronzecast #bronzecasting #movingart #PGAVgalleries #VicGalleriesFromHome #mteliza

05.01.2022 Karl Duldig (1902 - 1986) Public Works of Art - sites around Melbourne This unusual relief is nevertheless a hallmark of Karl Duldigs work; although part of the modernist tradition, Karls sculptures often took on a figurative form. The work consists of fragmented geometric, abstract and figurative forms in beaten, moulded and crumpled copper and suspended in relief from a steel grid. In 1970 the businessman Henry Krongold commissioned the work for his city office building.... The building was later sold to Melbourne City Council and the artwork was transferred with the land title.
