25.01.2022 As any secondary school teacher would attest, the number of students who enter Year 7 without functional literacy skills is an indictment on our education system. So often, these are bright & capable kids who simply haven't received the literacy instruction that they needed, when they needed it. The results of this inaction can be devastating - poor self-esteem, anxiety, depression, school refusal, truancy & acting out. So much unnecessary heartache and wasted potential. Pr...imary teachers need the resources and training to provide effective assessment & intervention from Prep. No child should slip through the cracks, much less 50,000! For this reason (and many more!) we at The Dyslexia Hub fully support the Primary Reading Pledge and stand behind Five from Five, AUSPELD and Learning Difficulties Australia in their efforts to reduce the number of children starting high school unable to read well.

24.01.2022 Wow...and what a term it's been! A huge thank you to all of our wonderful families who have been so incredibly supportive over the course of the past three months. We love what we do and are so grateful that we've been able to continue to work with your gorgeous kids throughout this period. We hope that everyone takes some time out this evening to reflect on what an amazing job they've done getting through this term. Whether your kids have thrived or just survived - we made it! Wishing everyone a restful break. See you all back at The Hub in Term 3.

23.01.2022 Love that Henry Winkler is such an awesome advocate for dyslexic kids One out of five kids has some sort of learning challenge. That's a big population to j...ust leave behind. Teachers have this herculean task of having to teach the same amount of information in the same amount of time to the fastest child and [to] the one who learns the slowest. Somebody is going to fall through the cracks. Somebody is getting short-shrifted. - Henry Winkler, actor, dyslexic, author, advocate, legend! #dyslexia #dyslexiaawareness #advocate #untileveryonecanread #icon #henrywinkler #thefonz

23.01.2022 Chuffed to have had this article shared by Phonic Books!

22.01.2022 Another Emily Hanford gem. Don't be put off by the US context...it's just as relevant to the situation we find ourselves in here in Australia. The ability to access evidence-based reading instruction should not be dependent on a family's income, yet far too often this is the case. This creates a two-tier, inequitable system that serves to further disadvantages those who are already disadvantaged. #readingisahumanright

18.01.2022 For all those parents out there struggling to find inexpensive ways to support their kids' learning, here is a list of some of my favourite teaching resources t...hat aren't going to break the bank. Some are for younger kids, others are more suited to teens. There are reading, spelling, writing & Maths tools...apps, games, workbooks, readers & more. What's on your list of favourites?

18.01.2022 A quick post to let everyone know that, even though The Dyslexia Hub team has made the difficult decision to cancel all face-to-face teaching/therapy sessions for the remainder of the term (effective this Friday), the Dyslexia Hub Library will remain operational. We appreciate that - in the event of school closures and/or more widespread social isolation measures - demand for books will likely increase. We are therefore keen to find ways to continue to provide this service to... our members. Although - in an effort to protect the health & well-being of everyone - we will no longer be opening the library to the public, we will continue to run a pick-up/drop-off service for members (albeit with more limited hours). As always, books can be reserved online at: https://dyslexiahub.libib.com/ and will be available for pick-up at the following times: Saturday 1-3pm Tuesday 10-12pm Thursday 4-6pm Whilst tomorrow afternoon (3-5pm) will be the last time that the library will be physically open for borrowing for the foreseeable future, please dont hesitate to email/message if you would like some advice about book selection. In the coming weeks, we will also be looking at ways that we can expand the support services we offer through the library (e.g. in the event of long-term school closures, putting together home learning packs to go along with readers). If anyone has any other ideas/suggestions, wed love to hear them. :) Stay safe in these crazy times! Amanda

Dot points are absolutely fine!

17.01.2022 Just love this! The power of embracing dyslexia.

15.01.2022 For those after a clear and concise explanation of how the brain learns to read (and therefore why it is essential that children are provided with explicit instruction in both phonics & phonological awareness), look no further than this wonderful video! Thanks to Annie Unger from Rosanna Golflinks PS.

15.01.2022 The headline says it all...

14.01.2022 Help us trade our way up! Our ultimate goal is to raise enough money to launch Revive! - a subsidised, term-long, intensive structured literacy & multisensory Maths program for students in Grades 5 & 6 who are in critical need of quality, evidence-based intervention. How are we planning on making this happen? With a ping pong ball! ... All you need to do to help us achieve our goal is to offer up just one item sitting in a cupboard, storeroom or garage gathering dust. It's that simple! Here's how it will work... If you'd like to be the new owner of this deceptively-ordinary-looking, yet actually-quite-versatile ping pong ball: 1. Head over to the Dyslexia Hub Trade Up page. 2. Like the page. 3. Post a photo of something (anything!) you'd like to trade for the ping-pong ball in the comments below the pinned post. There may well be a bottle in it for whoever posts the winning trade! It doesn't have to be super impressive...just anything lying around the house that you no longer need but someone else might value. The idea is that each trade up takes us one step closer to our goal. The ping-pong ball could be exchanged for a toy someone's children have outgrown, which might be traded for a no-longer-needed tennis racquet, which might be swapped for an old coffee table...and so we go, trading up until - after multiple trades - we have something of considerable value that we are able to sell to fund our program. Once enough offers have come in, we will announce whose item has won the trade and will be in touch to arrange a contactless exchange. Only one trade will be selected per trade round. Our newly-acquired item will then be offered up for trade...and so the fun begins! Please accompany your photo(s) with a brief description of your item and your location. Happy trading! Amanda - The Dyslexia Hub

14.01.2022 For all those Science of Reading sceptics out there...

12.01.2022 Am excited to announce that this term we will be introducing Yoga @ The Hub. Our first 5-week program - targeting kids in Grades 3-6 - will begin on the 28th February and will take place on Friday afternoons between 4 and 5pm. Run by the wonderful Esther Murphy from My Serenity Yoga, Esther's kids' yoga classes introduce mindfulness, strength and flexibility, and teach kids to use breath to control emotions, boost confidence and maintain a healthy mind. In Term 1, her focus ...will be goal setting and starting off the school year with positivity. Beneficial for stress, anxiety and personal growth, Esther's classes are perfect for all kids - neurodiverse or not. As a trained counsellor, qualified kids yoga instructor and mum of three, Esther brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to her classes. We are so lucky to have her join us at The Dyslexia Hub! 01.01.2022 We're so excited that this is happening in our neck of the woods! Kudos to La Trobe Uni for taking the lead in bringing the Science of Reading to teacher education. Love that they're bringing together experts from a range of fields - something we've always been committed to here at The Dyslexia Hub. Through professional collaboration, so much more is possible! "A Victorian university is spearheading a push to overhaul the way children are taught to read, with the launch of a ...new research institute aimed at promoting the science behind the development of early language and literacy skills. La Trobe Universitys new Science of Language and Reading Lab, to be known as SOLAR Lab, has been established to promote the scientific study of oral language and reading skills, with a view to translating findings into classroom practice. The lab, which is co-directed by highly regarded educational psychologist Pamela Snow and literacy and reading specialist Tanya Serry, is also involved in reviewing how the universitys own initial teacher education degrees, which admit about 600 students a year, prepare graduates to teach reading."
