05.01.2022 Today is World AIDS Day (December 1), a time for us to come together to remember those we have lost an AIDS-related illness. It is also time to raise awareness ...of issues surrounding HIV, and show solidarity with and support for people living with HIV. When World AIDS Day was first held in 1988, it was a time of devastation and grief. The HIV crisis was at its peak and many of our loved ones were getting sick and dying. Our communities were stigmatised and marginalised, living under a cloud of uncertainty and fear. But in the face of insurmountable odds, gay men mobilised and took action, as did other affected groups such as sex workers and people who injected drugs. Marching alongside were researchers, scientists, clinicians and policymakers, as well as allied communities across the spectrum all of whom bravely took up the fight against HIV/AIDS. Thirty years on, HIV is still with us, but times have changed. We have made remarkable progress since the early years of the HIV crisis. Recent data in NSW shows that HIV diagnoses continue to decline overall, HIV testing rates are at an all-time high, and more people living with HIV are on treatment than ever before. We are heading in the right direction but we still have a long way to go. While HIV notifications are declining among Australian born gay men, we are not seeing this same decline among those born overseas. Moreover, while HIV testing is at an all-time high, there are still some people being diagnosed late with HIV. In addition, despite advancements in testing and treatment, some attitudes haven’t changed. Stigma can have profound impacts on people living with HIV and can prevent those at risk from getting tested and accessing the support they need. In order to truly end HIV, we must ensure everyone is on board and that no one gets left behind. So on this World AIDS Day, let’s take the opportunity to think of the past and remember those we have lost. And in doing so, reflect on how far we have come and survey the path that lies before us. We’re all in this together every journey counts.
