12.06.2022 Are you competing at Berrima ODE, or just want to brush up on your cross country riding skills? I will be teaching a group of riders at Berrima/Araluen this Friday, if you would like to come along please contact me for details. Riders must be confident riding independently and to 60cm minimum.
01.06.2022 Have you given your horse some time off over winter? Do you have a major competition coming up in a few months and are unsure how to prepare your horse's fitness for it? Horse fitness is essential for all equestrian disciplines- from racing to showjumping to dressage, and everything in between. It takes around 12-16 weeks to build a horse up to peak fitness levels and it is not ideal to have the horse at peak fitness for too long, as it is thought this leads to behavioral pro...blems such as becoming sour as well as putting the horse under large amounts of physical and mental stress. Think of your horses fitness program as a triangle. The top represents 100% fitness. The higher you want the top to be, the wider the base gets. So the fitter you want your horse to be at the end of your program depends on how much preparation you do at the beginning of the program. The base of the triangle represents low intensity work (long slow distance work) and the top represents high intensity work. Therefore it is also implied that as you increase intensity in work, the volume should decrease. Horses maintain aerobic capacity for several weeks after a break (much better than humans!). For every two weeks your horse is on a break, allow one week of work to get back to the previous fitness level. So if you give the horse 4 months off, it will take 8 weeks to achieve the previous fitness level. (Marlin & Nankervis, 2002)
29.05.2022 Proud coach moment with Isabella Vassallo competing at her very first Sydney Royal in the pony club riding class today.
08.05.2022 A couple of my horses had a visit to the vet to get their routine dental procedures done. Thanks to super vet Dr Gill from South Coast Equine Veterinary Practice! #horseriding #dressage #eventing #showjumping #equestrian #equine #equinevet #equinedentalvet
21.01.2022 It’s so important to keep your horses cool and hydrated in Summer, particularly on those hot humid days like we had yesterday. Dehydration can lead to a multitude of issues, including colic. This is a much cheaper alternative than an after hours vet bill on Christmas Day!
