20.01.2022 HAPPIEST OF BIRTHDAYS TO THE WONDERFUL DR LIZZIE! We hope your day is as FABULOUS as you are!

15.01.2022 TEAR DUCT FLUSHING Horses have a tear duct which is a small tube that connects the eye to the nostril. This tube drains the consistent flow of tears produced by the eye to the nostril. If the tear duct becomes blocked with pus, mucus, hairs or foreign bodies, the tears will not drain and instead, flow down the face. We can diagnose a blocked tear duct by applying a fluorescein dye to the eye which shows where the normal tear film is going. In a normal horse this green d...ye will appear out of a small hole in the nostril. In a horse with a blocked tear duct, the green dye will overflow down the face as seen in the picture in the comments below. In order to unblock a tear duct, we flush sterile saline through a small catheter in the opening in the nostril and gently flush upwards as seen in the video. This saline should then appear in the eye bringing with it the material that was blocking the duct. In this case the duct was blocked with an accumulation of small hairs that had been shed after winter. If you notice your horse has one or both eyes constantly having tears drip down the face, it's a good idea to get one of our experienced veterinarians out to do a thorough ophthalmic examination. 1300 762 224

13.01.2022 Wolf teeth are small peg like teeth which sit just in front of the first cheek tooth in horses. Because wolf teeth are not necessary, and there is a possibility they can interfere with bit placement in performance horses, many people opt to have them removed before a horse starts training. At The Equine Practice we always sedate the horse and use local anaesthetic to numb the gum surrounding the wolf tooth. We then use a special instrument specifically designed to elevate t...he gum around the tooth for its removal. Below is a picture of two wolf teeth Dr Christian removed yesterday from a young horses’ first dental appointment. Feel free to contact us at the clinic if you have questions about wolf teeth or dental procedures we provide. 1300 762 224 #wolfteeth #wolfteethextraction

13.01.2022 As Melbourne enters stage 4 restrictions we thought we would give our wonderful clients an update on how this impacts veterinary care of your horse. We are pleased to report that veterinarians are considered an essential service and therefore our clinic will remain open 24hrs a day 7 days a week. As always we are continuing to practice high levels of bio security which includes wearing a face mask at all times and wearing a new pair of disposable gloves at each consultat...ion. We do ask that our clients also wear a mask during your consultation. If you are feeling unwell or showing any potential signs of COVID 19, or have been tested and currently awaiting results, to please contact the clinic prior to your appointment. Our clinic in Lilydale remains closed to the public, however medications can still be collected via telephone arrangement. Medications can also be posted out if preferred. PLEASE NOTE THAT YOU ARE ABLE TO TRAVEL 5KM OUTSIDE YOUR AREA TO CARE FOR YOUR HORSE. We know this is a very difficult time for everybody in Victoria, but together we can get through this!
