24.01.2022 I cannot begin to explain how proud I am of @kirra_equestrian. Her hard work, persistence, grit, talent and motivation to improve herself and her riding for the benefit of her ponies and health, no one deserves to win a STATE CHAMPIONSHIP more than her!

23.01.2022 I had the pleasure of teaching the Woodcrest Equestrian ladies on Thursday! Each and every one of them showed fantastic improvement, but most of all I loved their motivation to want to improve themselves. Keep it up ladies!

19.01.2022 Spending my weekend, doing what I love! Had the pleasure of going out to @teamdougall again working with fabulous and proactive riders! 16.01.2022 Pleased to be working with Elsam again!!! Lock in Sunday 14th December in your diary!!!

16.01.2022 Just a little appreciation post for a hard working gal! Jess Somerfield has been working her butt off for months in and out of the saddle. I have had the pleasure of working with her out of the saddle to help her becoming a more effective rider, improve her flexibility and stamina. Not only does she ride a minimum of 10 horses daily and coach, she also completes our sessions at least 3x a week. She is so determined to improve herself for the benefit of her horses ...and has some brilliant aspirations for the years to come. #riderbiomechanics #riderfitness #eventing #equestrian #biomechanics #sportsmedicine #theeventingphysiologist #exercisephysiology #kinesiology #fitness #horseriding #equestrianperformance #training #equestrianathlete

16.01.2022 Rider Fit classes have been developed to improve your riding performance and equilibrium in the saddle with specific focus to postural strength, stability and mobility. Each class has a focus point revolving around a key component of Rider Fitness, running for 45-60mins, utilising minimal equipment. Currently we are running Online Rider Fit Classes Via Zoom Meetings. The Class Pass includes unlimited access to live classes for the month as well as access to the link recordi...ng after class and access to our private group. Whether you want to attend the classes live or perform the recording at your own time, you can complete them any where at any time- NO EXCUSES! This could be your next step to improving your riding performance- your comfort, your feel, your energy and your mobility on the horse! $30 for the month of October! 13.01.2022 Very unexpected but very exciting results at the @ndhdressage end of year trophy lunch. Noodle winning 3rd place overall in the preliminary and a silver medal for consistent scores. 09.01.2022 Was so great competing along side @kirra_equestrian today at NDHD. She competed with poise and maturity well beyond her years. I have had the pleasure of working with Kirra at @moretonallbodycare as part of our athlete development program, where we not only work on strengthening to improve our riding performance but also work on the other aspects that create an ATHLETE! #moretonallbodycare #theeventingphysiologist #athletedevelopment #eventing #dressage #exercisephysiology #strength #sportsmedicine

07.01.2022 Rider fitness is just as important! Here the top event riders speak about their lead up to Burghley!

07.01.2022 Try it Tuesday: 4 of my all-time favourites. These are some basic, yet functional exercises for correct technique and appropriate muscle activation to help improve our daily activities and work towards improving us in the saddle for improved performance, increased athleticism and reducing the risk of injury. These are a stripped back version of some of the exercises that form a base to my exercise prescription in my online classes and general exercise prescription. ...These aren’t new or fandangled exercises, but they are working on some of the KEY PRINCIPLES of training an equestrian athlete. They are a great stepping stone for someone starting out, or the long term athlete to review their technique. Pelvic tilt into Bridge: Working on posterior chain and core strength- key points: knees at 90deg, even weight in left and right feet, roll the pelvis back into a posterior tilt, segmentally control each individual vertebrae up, then slowly lower back down into neutral. Repeat 3 sets of 10 Bird Dog: Posterior oblique sling and core strengthening- Key points: knees under hips, wrists under shoulders, keep back in neutral and don’t let the lower back sag as you extend. Repeat 3 sets of 10 Table Top Leg Extensions: Core strengthening key points: maintain neutral position in your spine throughout, work on keeping the deep transverse abdominal muscle (deep core) active and avoid doming through rectus abdominus (six pack) Repeat 3 sets of 10 reps each side Squats-> Pulses: Lower limb and functional strengthening- Key points: even weight distribution in left and right leg, keep spine in neutral, hinge through hips and knees and avoid the knees coming too far forward, falling in or falling out (track in line with 2nd toe), repeat 3 sets of 10 reps of full squats followed by 10 reps pulse squats **NB: The videos are slightly sped up to keep it short. I didn’t realise how loud the wind was whilst recording this, I initially was going to have all the information in the video, so ignore my random talking and hand gestures. **

06.01.2022 One of the main questions I get asked is how to improve my lower leg and heel position? The top riders make it look effortless for their lower leg and heel to stay in the perfect position, do you find yourself asking how you could create this yourself? With riding, we need to be elastic and mobile in our body in order to ride effectively, absorb force applied against us and move with the horse. We definitely don’t want our heel to be fixed, we actually need it to act like a ...shock absorber, with our ankle being flexible and mobile. What can cause us to be immobile or stiff in the ankle? -Calf tightness -Calf weakness -Lack of balance -Old ankle or foot injuries How do I improve this? Strengthening the calf complex, eg. Gastrocnemius and Soleus muscles, to enable them to work effectively through their full range of motion. Not only strengthening the calf but the legs as a whole will help you maintain a stronger lower leg position. So get those squats going!! Also, progressing strength exercises to single leg work can be not only beneficial for increased strength improvements but also improved balance and stability. Let’s face it, a lot of our balance in the saddle is generated from a small section of a stirrup, we need good ankle stability! Lengthening the muscle group is most beneficial to be completed in a dynamic way, eg. Eccentric loading (Strengthening the muscle from a lengthened position). Static stretching may help in the short term, so would be a great tool to utilise just prior to hoping on your horse. For long term improvements, like with anything, you must PRACTISE!! Muscles need repetition to enable progression, just like you practise particular movements with your riding, your body needs to practise particular movements often to enable a change. These are just some tips and suggestions and by all means aren’t the be all and end all. Horses for courses, progressions and regressions may be necessary, so contact an exercise professional for more advice and exercise prescription. www.eventingphysiologist.com [email protected] #riderbiomechanics #riderfitness #eventing #equestrian #biomechanics #sportsmedicine #theeventingphysiologist #exercisephysiology #kinesiology #fitness #horseriding #equestrianperformance #training #equestrianathlete #squat #calfraise #eccentric #strength
