15.01.2022 As families adjust yet again to changes in their routine, with the school holidays, it is important to acknowledge everything that we have been through and are ...continuing to deal with. This week I thought it would be great to get a take on the challenges children are dealing with and for things to watch out for as we embrace our new Covid normal world. Lyndon Stott from The Family Tool Box in Burnie, has provided some advice for me to share on how to comfort our kids and help them through this time in a positive caring way. There is no doubt Covid19 threw its share of challenges at every household. Take time to recognize and celebrate each others achievements; no matter how big or small. Be proud of your children and yourself for getting through the difficult times together. Speak openly about any worries that your children may have, and answer their questions in age-appropriate ways. Try to create safety for children by listening to and understanding their thoughts and feelings. Empathise with little people too; let them know you care. While you talk about the great achievements that happened during Covid19, remember its totally ok to talk with children about the "not-so-good-moments". Invite your children to share their understanding of situations they didnt like, and ask what they would like to do differently if another pandemic occurred. Listen to the perception your child has developed in these times; you might be surprised by the insight they have formed. Incorporate your childrens ideas and hopes into a family approach for any future events. Whatever the conversation is about, use these conversations as an opportunity to develop a stronger connection with your child. Lyndon Stott BCO, MSW I would like to thank Lyndon for his help and congratulate him on such a great service he and his staff are providing for the children of Braddon. Joan

04.01.2022 AUTISM & UNITY'S THERAPEUTIC PLAY GROUPS - PART 1 How our groups can help: Children with ASD often struggle with social communication and interaction, which c...an cause feelings of isolation. In our groups, children will be able to communicate in a way in which they feel most comfortable, often non-verbally. Through this safety and freedom they start working out what is effective and not. This improved communication can then extend to their home and school environment. Although children with ASD may play differently to other children, it is STILL play in which they express themselves and communicate their world. Play is the language of children. When toys are used, these become the words for children that they may not be able to express verbally. Children with ASD can have difficulty empathising and understanding the perspective of others. Our group can help children have the opportunity to experience empathy within relationship through play, and grow in their ability to empathise with others. Stay tuned for PART 2 later this week! If you would like for you and your child to be a part of this, REGISTER now for our Therapeutic Play Group, commencing Monday 27 July. 03.01.2022 FRIENDLY REMINDER TO PARENTS DURING THESE TIMES... Follow your instincts; deep down you know what you and your kids need, in any given moment. Lower your ...expectations of yourselves, and your kids. Avoid comparing yourself to other parents. If you do want advice, take it from a select few with whom you trust, and do your best to tune out the others. You are doing the best that you can. There is no room for guilt here. HAVE FUN, whatever that looks like for you and your family. Through our groups at Unity, we embrace parents to be exactly who they are, with a few added tools in their toolkit. We reject the idea of the "perfect parent", because it doesnt exist! To be a part of a supportive environment where you can connect with like-minded families and add new skills to your toolkit, enrol with us for Term 4 Contact us via [email protected] or messenger

03.01.2022 DE-ESCALATION TIPS Avoid trying to reason in the heat of the moment, or making demands. Get on your childs level. Validate their feelings, not their ac...tions. Decrease stimulation. Respect personal space. In our Therapeutic Play Group Program, we provide strategies on how to respond to big emotions/behaviours, and would love to share these with you! To enrol, contact us on [email protected] or FB messenger

01.01.2022 Please meet Lyndon, your Unity Therapeutic Play Group Team Leader for Burnie, TAS. I believe childhood is the most precious period in anyones life. What child...ren experience in their early years have critical effects on them as individuals and their interactions with their community. The way children process information from their environment, and create their adaptive behaviours fascinates me. My passion is to provide a non-judgemental, safe space for children to explore all matter of experiences. The reason I find this work so enjoyable is knowing that the time we spend with children is an investment to set them in good stead for the later stages of life. The Unity program is an excellent place for anyone to attend. I believe everyone will have something to learn and something to share. Just as children need safe space to learn and explore - so do adults! Our play groups can offer this space for both you and our child Email [email protected] or FB message to join Lyndon in Term 3
