05.01.2022 H E A T S T R O K E W A R N I N G As the weather heats up once again this summer on the Central Coast, it serves as a timely reminder to prevent your ...pets from suffering heat stroke!! What causes heat stroke? Any hot environment can predispose to heat stroke, and if your pet cannot cool themselves down adequately via panting, body temperature quickly starts to rise, leading to stress and exhaustion. Common mistakes include exercising your pet on a hot day, not providing adequate shade and water, or leaving your pet in a hot car. For some short faced breeds (e.g. pugs & bulldogs), older pets, or those with pre-existing medical conditions, they can succumb to the effects of heat stroke very quickly. What are the signs of heat stroke? Signs of heat stroke include excessive panting, drooling, distress, redness of the gums, uncoordinated movement, vomiting and collapse. In many cases, heat stroke can lead to coma and death. What can you do if you think your pet is suffering heat stroke? - The first thing to do is to remove your pet from the hot environment or stop the activity (e.g playing or exercise). - Hose down your pet with cool water, or place them under cool water in the shower or bath tub, making sure to keep their head elevated to avoid aspiration of water. - Call your veterinarian immediately for advice, and to let them know you are on your way. Advice can differ accordingly to what clinical signs your pet is experiencing. - Get in the car and take water soaked towels to wipe over your pet and put the air con on full blast while you drive to your closest vet. What happens once I get to the vet? Emergency treatment for heat stroke varies depending on the severity of clinical signs, but often involves attempts to stabilize your pet by reducing body temperature, giving intravenous fluids and oxygen. It is then extremely important to monitor for signs of secondary organ failure, electrolyte abnormalities, clotting problems and brain damage. Some pets may even be put in an induced coma. What can you do to avoid heat stroke in your pets? The good news is that there are many ways that you can avoid heat stroke in your pets, including: - Providing adequate shade and water, which may include keeping your pet inside in the air conditioning during hot weather - NEVER leave your pet in a parked car - Dont walk or exercise your pet during hot weather - Dont walk your pets on hot asphalt or hot sand - if you cant keep your hand on the ground then its too hot to walk - Dont let your pets over exert themselves in the heat- even playing and swimming on a hot day can lead to heat exhaustion from excessive exercise - Add ice cubes to your pets drinking water If you think your pet is suffering heat stroke, please call us immediately during business hours on 0243845888. For emergencies after hours, you can contact Animal Referral Hospital on 0243233886; or SASH on 0243111399.
