We turn our frustrations into a positive and take some time out in nature to explore Blackdown Tableland National Park. Located between Emerald and Rockhampton in Queensland’s Central Highlands, this really is a hidden gem and boasts an incredible plateau, sandstone gorges, crystal clear waterholes and the beautiful Rainbow Falls waterfall. We’re keeping our fingers crossed the van will get sorted in the coming days so we can hit the road and continue our journey north to the Tropics! 18.01.2022 South Stradbroke Island, Queensland If you fancy a secluded island escape where nature and wildlife abound, yet civilisation is (literally) just a stones throw away, South Stradbroke Island is the perfect choice for your next camping adventure or day escape! Located on the northern end of the Gold Coast, South Straddie (as the locals call her) offers a relaxed and grounding environment from the moment you step ashore. With an abundance of wildlife, endless crowd-free beac...hes, clear and calm waters, and 1800 hectares of conservation park, it’s easy to forget there’s a big wide world out there. Campgrounds - There are 3 campgrounds on the island, Tipplers, North, and South Currigee (where we stayed). All offer gorgeous water front camp sites complete with fire pit, in this true back to basics camping environment. South Currigee has a great little 2 bedroom cottage, complete with everything you need to make your stay super comfortable! Cafe - Our seafood lunch at Tipplers Licensed Cafe was seriously some of the best food we have ever eaten! With their Executive Chef trained by some of Australia’s best, a relaxed beachside vibe, and it’s spectacular waterfront location, it’s easy to see why Tippler’s is an incredibly popular and favourite destination for GC locals! Getting there - Access to the island is by boat only, a true Gilligan experience! And with the island being located so close to the Gold Coast mainland, the trip over is easy and quick. If you don’t own your own boat, you can hire one, grab a water taxi, or book the Tipplers Ferry that departs daily from Jacobs Well. Leave the van - We stayed at the Jacobs Well Tourist Park before visiting the island, so leaving the van safe and secure was a breeze. The Tipplers Ferry departs from Jacobs Well pier, a few hundred meters walk from the caravan park which made getting to and from the island so easy! We overnight in the sleepy town of Alpha, famous for its fossilised wood, and set up camp for a week at one of our favourite spots just south of Emerald, Lake Maraboon. We spend days visiting the nearby Sapphire Gemfields, immersing ourselves in the history and culture of the area, exploring underground mines and trying our hand at fossicking for precious and beautiful gemstones! 09.01.2022 Beautiful Blackdown Tableland National Park is definitely worth a visit if you are in the Queensland Central Highlands! (Or passing through between the Outback and the Coast!) Rainbow Falls is a stunning turquoise oasis and absolutely worth the moderate 4km hike (and 240 steps) to get there. 14 months on the road and we are still just as blown away by Mother Nature's genius, as the day we started travelling this great country. ...
