25.01.2022 Estrogen, like all hormones, when they’re perfectly balanced, will work in perfect harmony and your body will work as it should...BUT if they’re is an imbalance you will experience problems the only way to truly know your levels is with a blood test - and interpreting results requires looking at ratio to progesterone as well as establishing baseline - ALL knowledge a great practitioner will be across Estrogen deficiency:... hot flushes night sweats breast tenderness brain fuzz insomnia & fatigue headache & worsening migraine depression, anxiety susceptibility to bone fracture amenorrhea fertility issues Estrogen dominance: hot flushes night sweats breast tenderness brain fuzz trouble sleeping fatigue headache & worsening migraine depression, anxiety, irritable PMS hair loss heavy bleeding, clotting, irregular cycle fertility issues See a problem with deciphering between the 2?! Symptoms of estrogen dominance and deficiency are so similar - and they’re also similar to peri menopause and menopause! But the good news is that there are so many ways to get back to a HEALTHY cycle. If you are experiencing any of the above and don’t know where to turn reach out to @thefemaleathletenetwork to get you started. 22.01.2022 Ever have those days when you feel like you just can’t miss? You hit your target EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. Whether it’s a backhand down the line a blistering boundary or nailing those 3 pointers or just the apple core into the bin from long range at work, you’re on ! Next time this happens, stop and think about where you are in your cycle...... during the follicular phase (menstruation) and when testosterone is higher, your spatial cognition and visual acuity are on point.... what goes must come down as hormone levels increase throughout a natural (non pill/no exogenous hormone cycle) and you transition to the luteal phase these abilities can decline a little And that’s when we can experience the very technical term of the dropsy’s you can’t hit a target if you tried these days, and definitely don’t volunteer to carry a tray of glassware on these days! Tell me your stories and tag a mate to share theirs in the comments! One of my best was going to put a takeaway coffee on the roof of my , only to drop it straight through the sun roof on to the leather seats my day at work that day ran on a very similar theme. This is just one of the reasons we need to start talking about our cycle and including coaching and support staff in the conversation... Want to know more? 21.01.2022 Fantastic to see relatively mainstream media putting this out there!! It helps all those hesitant to start the conversation about peak performance and their period see and hear, that it is already happening at the higher levels in sport. https://amp.abc.net.au/article/12989786
17.01.2022 Iron. You’ve probably heard it’s really important for female athletes from just about any coach or support staff you’ve come across...but do you actually know what is meant by this? Iron is an ESSENTIAL element that is critical to oxygen transport in the body. ... Iron is lost when we and when we bleed . Therefore, female athletes are far more likely to find they are anaemic. Without iron, your red blood cells and hemoglobin can’t do what they do best...get oxygen to all the working muscles . Low iron = sub optimal performance. Good iron levels = better energy levels and... reduced fatigue better immune function better concentration better and more restful sleep better muscle function reduces restless legs syndrome better nail, hair and skin integrity improved PMS symptoms and may assist to reduce heavy bleeding Iron is naturally present in many foods, and I always recommend a Food First approach when it comes to supplementation, sometimes though, you’re going to need supplemental iron to get back on track. 15.01.2022 One week before Christmas. How did we get here?! I honestly feel like we did March...and then blur...and then Christmas. It hasn’t been an easy year for SO many, there has been loss, and there has been struggles, but then if you pause for a moment and look back on what you have achieved this year...it’s huge. I had meeting this morning with a very wise woman. I hadn’t met her before, only knew of her through a friend...and although it was only an hour, and it was business,... the take home for me was huge. I’ve had the time to pause and look back at how far I’ve come. And it FEELS good. I’m excited about what lies ahead for @thefemaleathletenetwork . So as we all sprint to the finish line of 2020, take the time to reflect on the GOOD of this year. You might not feel it just yet, but it’s there. Huge thanks and gratitude to @natalie_martin and @miyofallshaw I’m pretty stoked you’re in my corner for this wild ride #womeninbusiness #womeninspiringwomen #womeninleadership #womeninsport
15.01.2022 Today is Australia Day. And I am torn as to how best to acknowledge today...a day that for generations has hurt a part of our community so deeply, and for so long. While there is much to celebrate for our beautiful country, from incredible landscapes and incredible humans who make this place we call home so special, let’s listen carefully and acknowledge our freedoms and all things Australian on a day that allows ALL Australians to feel part of our respective communities. ... (Huge kudos to @ballaratcity for their inclusive dawn service initiative at Lake Wendouree - if I lived a little closer I would have attended.) I’m all for allowing today to be a day of mourning for our Aboriginal brothers and sisters. #australiaday2021 #changethedate #womeninhealthcare #womeninleadership
11.01.2022 Loving that the conversation around periods and peak performance is starting to hit the media. This only makes it easier for women of all ages to start talking about their experiences, which in turn makes it easier to get the right advice! https://amp.abc.net.au/article/12989786
07.01.2022 Hormonal contraceptives. If you are choosing to use HORMONAL contraception, it is really important that you find the right option for you. SO many options! ... Pills: Combined oral contraceptive (COC - estrogen & progesterone) available in monophasic and triphasic options and Progesterone Only Pill (POP). Injection: 3 monthly of medroxyprogesterone (progestin) Implant: small & flexible rod inserted just under the skin on the inside of your arm that slowly release a type of progesterone. Vaginal ring: flexible little ring you insert for 3 weeks at a time, it releases small amount of etonogestrel and ethinylestradiol. IUD - Hormonal IUD releases progesterone inserted for at least 5 years. Things to remember No contraception is effective All have advantages and disadvantages to be considered, and yes, they can impact performance You should never feel crappy taking hormonal contraceptives, if you do, your perhaps haven’t found the right option yet Always remember: Your body, your choice. ASK for all the information so you can make an informed choice. Clinically speaking, practitioners should always have an individual, lowest effective dose approach, as one size definitely does NOT fit all! Got questions that need answers? Ask away in the comments...you’ll probably find that someone else also has the same question !! Tag a mate who needs some answers to their questions! 04.01.2022 FACT POLY CYSTIC OVARIAN SYNDROME aka PCOS appears to be a common disorder among elite female athletes and is, indeed, the most frequent cause of endocrine disorders among Olympic sportswomen. Could there be a silver lining to this diagnosis? Body composition of PCOS athletes are more anabolic ... Have greater muscle mass Have higher bone mineral density Hyperandrogenism (high androgen) appears protective against bone loss, despite the oligomenorrhea/amenorrhea and relative estrogen deficiency higher endogenous androgens (PCOS athletes) is positively associated with lean mass and physical performance! Even with this positive, excellent symptom and endocrine management with a professional is always recommended.
