24.01.2022 Marri very often throws up some amazing colours, grain and figure. In this case all in the same log. These are quarter sawn pieces from a recently salvaged log. I have milled these at 45mm. We seem to often get requests for boards to finish at 35 which is kinda in between the standard thicknesses - so I have started milling at 45 to satisfy this requirement. Mmmm. The two round backs of the log have been milled in this way. The main part of the log has been slabbed. They are about 1m wide. And bonza. 20.01.2022 Milling a nice curly Marri log today. Originally about seven metres long, it was docked in half for milling. Some of the log had ring shake and these parts where slabbed at 60mm. The remainder has been cut for boards and posts. The boards are quarter sawn and the posts rift sawn. The widest boards are 300mm. Like 95% of our logs, these will be kept together and will be sold together to make , no doubt, some stunning furniture. Mmm. 18.01.2022 One of our clients had his computer hacked and the hackers changed the account number on our invoice so his payment would go to a different account. He picked it up as the account number looked unfamiliar to him. As you can see from the picture it looks like a normal invoice from us including the watermark. The top one is correct. Just a warning to all that things are getting scary from a business point of view.

17.01.2022 Some Karri boards out of the last kiln load. Karri has not been the first choice for furniture traditionally. This is mainly because of its tendency for surface checking. We have begun quarter sawing Karri to help fix this issue and the results have been very encouraging. This also gives a nice straight grain pattern in the board face. Karri is also very strong and great for chairs and similar. 06.01.2022 Although it shouldn’t be, it may surprise some that we are tree huggers at The Fine Timber Company. . These are photos of a few of the trees that we planted on our property in Donnybrook last winter. Most of the photos are of Tassie Blackwood. I will be maintaining these for sawlogs. You can see that they are not planted in rows. I don’t like that look. It is important to us that our trees add to the aesthetic value of the area. We have planted several other species in the ...same area including Blackbutt, Marri, Rose Gum and Spotted Gum. Also planted amount the trees are many different species of shrubs. These were chosen to be those with lots of flowers to attract the birds and bees. I have seen Grass Parrots nesting in this area. The grass in the last photo will shortly be about 5/6’ high. It is helping protect the trees from the wind and make them grow tall and straight. I will be adding more trees each year or two. And yes- plenty of snakes. This will produce some really nice boards and slabs. I am hoping to get them milled on the next few weeks, although I am also hoping to have a little bit of time off in the next few weeks.
