22.01.2022 As I read through a few of my favourite subscription emails on this rainy day marking the end to 2020, there is much to say and to ponder about the year that was. I'm drawn especially to the yearly wrap from the founder of my dear friend parkrun. Oh how I've missed this every Saturday morning- the 7am start for a free 5km run at nearby Centennial Park. Not until it was taken away did I realise how much I have missed it. In the words of the parkrun founder Paul:... "The regularity and reliability of parkrun provides a comfort that comes from knowing it is always there: the same time, the same place, the same friendly faces, support and encouragement. A chance to escape, or to catch up, to be in the fresh air, and amongst others. parkrun’s mere presence is a reassuring island of calm in often choppy seas." This is parkrun for me. 13.01.2022 Mixing up your exercise routine is not only great for the soul, but also for your body. Your 'tissues' (muscles, tendons, ligaments, bones etc) are very adaptable and if you challenge them differently, they become more resilient. This resilience prevents injury or movement imbalances. Being a keen road runner, I like to mix up my runs with a little bit of trail. Well..."trail" as much as you can in inner Sydney. Soft sand, rocks, diet, umping over tree roots, changing direc...tion....these things give my body a rest from the very mechanical aspect of road running. 12.01.2022 Do knees really not agree with running? Well....no, and yes. A study in 2019 in the BJM of Sports Medicine scanned (MRI) the knees of 82 first time marathoners, both 6 months out from the race and training program, and then 1 month post race. Surprisingly, they found the quality of the cartilage and bone of the knee joint surfaces ( tibia and femur) was better after the race than prior. What??? This really debunks the myth that running wears out the knees. However, the cartil...age under the knee cap was in worse health, as was the hamstring and ITB tendons. So....with all the training, the knee joint itself appeared to become stronger and healthier with all that running. Not the same can be said with other structures around the knee. If you have knee niggles, even if you're not in training for that marathon (!), Katrina, our resident runner and physio would love to help you out. 04.01.2022 This is such a common comment that I hear as I work with pregnant women everyday. I don't think I ever thought about my pelvic floor much either before falling pregnant. Afterall, down there was just meant to work, no thinking about it for the majority of women. Right? But then there's pregnancy....heaviness down there, feeling like your bladder and bladder control are not your own. And then there's labour...aargh...what an all consuming thing to saturate you..... thinking fo...rward to that huge event, which really now that you're pregnant, you cannot turn away from! But with awareness, knowledge and exercise, you can begin to trust that pelvic floor again! Women, we were made to do this, so let's do it! A July 2020 SCIENTIFIC paper (YES!) proved statistically that listening to your preferred music genre enhanced your strength performance and lowered reported exertion levels.
