25.01.2022 A FRUIT TO KILL FOR - JOSEPHINE DE MALINES, AT THE ADELAIDE FARMERS MARKET TOMORROW Reputedly named for Napoleons first wife, (whose first husband was beheaded) this extraordinary pear was actually named by its Belgian breeder for his wife Josephine Espere. Maybe it was so-named because THE PEAR WAS SO SWEET AND SCENTED! A unique quality of Josephines is that they can be eaten straight from the tree; unprotected by bitter tannins, the flesh is sweet and crunchy before the...y ripen. As the flesh softens, the pears become rich, juicy and melt in your mouth. They make a delicious snack and a great addition to childrens lunchboxes. If they become extra soft, simply pop them into a soup or SMOOTHIE for added richness. Gardeners should think seriously about planting a Josephine as there are now dwarf trees (on Quince rootstocks) available. They are great pollinators for other pears and teamed-up with a Packham and Nijiseiki will give you FRESH PEARS AND NASHIS FOR MONTHS.

15.01.2022 END OF THE BIG DRY! Many of you have been hanging-out for the release of our 2018 MATARO (MOURVEDRE) and it is one of 2 extremely different red wines well show to the World for the for the first time tomorrow at the Adelaide Farmers Market. Yes they are all Certified Organic and Ultra-low Preservative, and qualify for important places in a climate-change future, but they have vastly different bouquets and palates ... MATARO - A wine with big character that stood up to the extreme summer magnificently and dodged a bushfire that swept to our west without imparting any fume character. What it has got, is some lavender and musk on the nose, classic Mataro and cranberry on the palate with a bit of toffee on the finish. HOME BLOCK TEMPRANILLO - Friendly red-brick and fruity with hints of mulberry on the palate and French oak on the finish. Extremely drinkable! At $137.50 a dozen its a steal!

15.01.2022 COMMUNITY SPIRIT SAVING A DREAM FROM THE ASHES OF THE ADELAIDE HILLS FIRE Five days before Christmas Marc Webb and his family lost their house and potentially the dream of a permaculture farm and retreat for veterans like Marc who lives with pain from serious injuries and PTSD sustained in Afghanistan. But, encouraged by friends and community around them, they bravely invited the public to come and help them clear the carnage that was once their well-ordered little farm. By ...Saturday 4 Jan the temperatures had dropped and the site was safe. At 9am more cars poured up Langley Road than ever happened in its history. They towed trailers with every imaginable tool on board, even two Bobcat diggers; there were tradesmen, cooks, nurses, children, dogs, mountains of food and a gritty determination that the place was going to look very different by the end of the day. Marc and Rhiann had worked out list of key projects and work groups formed to tackle the removal of burnt trees, demolish the ruins of sheds, rebuild fences to protect the market garden from sheep that survived the fire, install drip irrigation on the damaged orchard and build a bridge across the creek to provide access. Well over 100 people turned up and sound of chain saws, wood chipping machines and generators humming didnt dull the vibrant conversations, meetings and greetings of good people Lunch was a military operation with a massive smorgasbord looking like a cross between a barbecue, a kids birthday and a vegetarian convention; something for everyone! Marc and Rhianns wedding photographer had come along and squeezed us all into a group photo. Then with roar, the tractor of a farmer from down the road arrived and started banging in new fence posts that someone else had brought along. An electrician had managed to get a makeshift service going and water was being pumped into a header tank, enabling thirsty plants to be watered. The place looked more like a farm than a warzone by the end if the day and everyone went home feeling fantastic! The Webbs will hear about their insurance this week and well let you know how the adventure unfolds on their permaculture property.

14.01.2022 GENETICALLY MODIFIED ADELAIDE ? With the politically-driven end to the genetically modified crop moratorium CLEAN, GREEN ADELAIDE WILL BECOME DIRTY, GM ADELAIDE unless the city and suburban councils get their act together quickly. They have just weeks to show the SA Minister of Primary Industries that they will be financially better off as NON genetically-modified crop areas. Action is needed NOW as many COUNCILS SEEM TO HAVE simply IGNORED THE REQUIREMENT TO CONSUL...T WITH THEIR COMMUNITIES and demonstrate that they will be better off in terms of marketing and trade if they intend to request Non-GM area designation Polls and research worldwide demonstrate clearly that MOST PEOPLE DO NOT WANT TO EAT GENETICALLY MODIFIED FOOD and in this case we are relying on our councils to help to stop the spread of GM into our food chain. Luckily there are peer-reviewed reports of current and future food markets showing that NON-GM food demand is rising at > 16% annually and lifting prices for Non-GM products that we can grow and process in SA. There are also specific reports from our Department of Primary Industries on variety yields and profitability that show Non-GM varieties deliver better profitability to our farmers than GM varieties. Daily prices on grain markets show certified Non-GM canola is commanding a premium of 12-19% over GM canola. But this is not just a matter for farmers! Around Adelaide there are breweries, flour mills, bakeries, ice-cream makers, butchers, restaurants, wineries, exporters, smallgoods manufacturers, our largest pasta manufacturer, biscuit makers and retailers who deal directly with food, and the $7.6B tourism industry that uses the hook of Adelaides clean, green food and fine and wine, to fill festivals like Tasting Australia, WOMAD, the Festival of Arts, Tour down Under and many regional events. Spare them the problem of GM contamination and contact your council today. We can send you dot points and references to help you compose something convincing, even if it is brief THE DECISION TO BE A NON-GM ADELAIDE STILL LIES WITH THE PUBLIC. If you do nothing, your council may well do nothing....and automatically become GM forever. There will be a ZOOM information session on Thursday 30 July at 7.30pm about the issue and how citizens and community groups can show the councils how they can capitalise on SAs green image and premium markets for NON-GM food, wine and environment. Those interested should contact [email protected] by email to request a link to the session. Please get your networks moving quickly and save SA food

13.01.2022 If you have access to wood ash and you like growing plants, crops or pastures, you may be able to make your own fertiliser! Unsurprisingly, WOOD ASH CONTAINS MOST PLANT NUTRIENTS except nitrogen and it improves the tilth of most soils. Simply screening out big lumps from the ash of your stove or bonfire, gives a material that can be spread evenly over your garden or paddock. We just pour ash through a piece of sloping wire mesh with 25mm square holes. The little bits of c...harcoal in it are beneficial, in enabling nutrient uptake and water storage You can spread the ash on soil instead of lime or potassium fertiliser and it contains useful micronutrients like Zinc, Magnesium and Copper It has a significant effect in raising pH (making the soil more alkaline) so YOU CAN OVERDO IT, but it has only half the effect of the same amount of lime. Bear in mind that for most plants the pH should not be pushed above 7.5. Get a soil pH test kit (about $30 from hardware stores) to check you soil regularly. Top-dressed applications of wood ash are usually LIMITED to 500gm per square metre (5 tonnes per hectare), which is like a light snowfall, to avoid excessive short-term impact of the change to pH. Most gardeners use about 100gm/sq m annually or as shown necessary by soil tests. Approximate proportions of macronutrients present in ash- Calcium 18%, Potassium 4%, Phosphorus 1% Safety is important! Avoid breathing in dry ash dust, wear gloves, dont spread the ash onto growing food crops. Dont use ash that may be contaminated with harmful chemicals eg the arsenic contained in permapine. (This advice is of a general nature and we advise further reading of detailed literature) Happy growing! See more

08.01.2022 FOOD, DEMOCRACY, TRANSPARENCY AND GENETICALLY MODIFIED CROPS A 'Green Arc' of SA local government Councils is applying to the state government, to PRECLUDE the growing of GM CROPS in their areas from November. The question is whether the Minister will respect the wishes of the people. EMAIL THE MINISTER and tell him to listen to the people and respect role of local government ATTEND THE COMMUNITY ACTION on Tues 13 Oct, 12noon-1pm on the steps of PARLIAMENT House... Councils have recently consulted with their communities, particularly including food growers and processers, as well as the community at large. This has been a huge task, made even more onerous by the pandemic and associated financial stringency. Councils asking for a change to Non-GM (PLAYFORD, GAWLER, BAROSSA, ADELAIDE HILLS, MT BARKER, ONKAPARINGA, YANKALILLA, ALEXANDRINA, VICTOR HARBOUR and potentially more) have combed through the polls, submissions, the Anderson and Mecardo reports, the Thomas Elder report, PIRSA agronomic and market information and marketing and academic papers provided during the consultation. They have gathered further relevant evidence including information from the people operating the markets for Australian products overseas and domestically, accurate values of exports, and detailed explanations of the way in which trade and marketing actually operates. Many have accepted delegations from organisations or individuals pro and anti GM and some have conducted public forums. The information in letters, reports and submissions have been reviewed by staff and in some cases independent experts to be sure the elected members of Council were fully informed and could act in the best interests of the community. Following Council decisions , letters of request and consultation reports have been presented to obtain the approval of the Minister (before which he must consult with the GM Crops Advisory Panel, a group clearly dominated by professionals and academics with interests in Genetic Modification and agribusiness). Having seen a number of the draft council submissions to the Minister, I can assure readers of their thorough, impartial content in terms of explaining that becoming Non-GMCrop areas will be most beneficial in terms of marketing and trade. Having supported the Bill through Parliament, it is NOW INCUMBENT ON THE GOVERNMENT TO HONOUR THE PROCESS. https://www.facebook.com/events/387824129259832

07.01.2022 FOOD FOREST UNSCATHED BY HILLIER BUSHFIRE Thanks to the many people who offered help, calls and positive thoughts yesterday as the Hillier/Northern Expressway fire swept towards The Food Forest. Luckily for us, a north easterly wind strengthened at the critical moment and the fire slid south to the Karbeethan Reserve. The flames took out a house and burned a property 2 blocks west of us and some 450 residents of Hillier Park between us and the fire were evacuated.... It was also interesting to see that our sheep made bee-line for a big carob tree and all lay under it till tea-time. Our fire plan was put into action and we think, would have worked, had it been challenged, but one thing quite surprised us; the mains water pressure really was reduced to and absolute trickle, as tankers and fire trucks sucked almost every drip of water out of the local mains. This meaning that people expecting to defend their homes with mains water would have been left high and dry. We have two water tanks of 22000 litres, each equipped with an electric pump...and if SA power cuts power off, we have a generator capable of running both pumps, or our cold-room and freezers. The Food Forest fruit and vegetable crops came through the heatwave well and well be back at the Adelaide Farmers Market on Sunday 29 Dec For those of you who still havent done Xmas shopping we can still email vouchers for our Shop products https://www.foodforest.com.au/shop/ Have a great break and wonderful new year

The Food Forest is a home and small farm at Gawler SA, which demonstrates the cultivation of organic foods, integrates animals into its land-care system and essentially runs on composted green-waste, rainwater and sunshine. The public is welcome to the Open Day on Sunday 4 Oct. It has two identical sessions so we can observe COVID distancing provisions; the first from 10am - 1pm and the second from 2-5pm. We have had to introduce BOOKINGS so we comply with COVID restrictions and expect to have the booking system operating through our website in a week or so. Tours will give an introduction to sustainable home design and building (even with straw bales), and to Permaculture design. Youll see our gardens, buildings, orchards, irrigation systems and revegetation and hear about strategies for capturing water, coping with climate change and rebuilding the ecology of our locality. Youll meet the chooks and mini sheep, see the compost making area, vineyards, a tiny strawbale cottage, use of greywater for irrigation and recharging of aquifers. There is no charge for children under 14, adults $15. Fresh produce, wine and educational DVDs (including a professionally made hour-long movie about permaculture and the creation of the Food Forest) will be for sale as well as fruit trees and grapevines including the best adapted fig trees from the CSIROs international collection, pomegranates and native fruit trees. The Food Forest also offers weekend workshops on Organic vegetable growing and Free Range Poultry (31 Oct) , an Introduction to Permaculture Design (1 Nov) and a full Permaculture Design Certificate course next Autumn. 04.01.2022 DEMOCRACY IN THE BALANCE AS GENETIC MODIFICATION 'SMELLY STITCH-UP' PROCEEDS A mockery is about to be made of democracy as the Liberal Government pushes through its Genetically Modified Crop plan for mainland SA which will essentially allow any type of Genetically Modified plant approved by the Australian Gene Regulator to be grown - from Apples to artichokes and wheat to tomatoes.. Essentially no consultation has been facilitated between the Minister of Primary Industry an...d the public or the Minister and Councils who have applied for Non GM designation Primary Industries staff have been forbidden to provide information about GM crop growing The GMCrops Advisory Committee is stacked with members who may be personally or professionally advantaged by the introduction of GM crops With a miniscule buffer separating paddocks of GM from Non-GM crops, incursions of GM genetic material are inevitable, causing contamination that will lead to the downgrading of crops and the loss of income and, for some farmers their Organic certification Detailed consultations were carried out by Councils, according to legislation to give them a role in determining whether their areas would benefit from Non-GM designation or not. Detailed reports were presented to the Minister by 11 councils showing that net benefit (and also showing most respondents believed that net benefit would accrue) The Minister announced that the net benefits described by councils had not met benchmarks set by the Advisory Committee and therefore their requests were refused At no stage in the legislation or during the process had any reference been made to 'benchmarks' or how they may be achieved The Minister has consistently made false claims stating that SA mainland growers do not receive premium prices for Non-GM crops Listen to GRAHAM BROOKMAN explain how Non-GM canola growers have been systematically receiving premium prices for years and how segregation of GM and Non GM crops in adjoining properties LETS EVERYONE DOWN https://radioadelaide.org.au//non-gm-farmers-lose-rights-/ WRITE TO THE PREMIER AND TELL HIM TO SCRAP THE CURRENT PROCEEDURE AND RUN AN EVIDENCE-BASED PROCESS WITH AN INDEPENDENT COMMISSIONER [email protected] YES, IT WOULD MEAN AMMENDING THE LEGISLATION Listen to Veterinarian and farmer Cathie Harvey describe the broad aspects of the Non-GM economic advantage http://radioadelaide.org.au//councils-petition-to-remain-/ WRITE TO THE PREMIER AND TELL HIM TO SCRAP THE CURRENT PROCEEDURE AND RUN AN EVIDENCE-BASED PROCESS WITH AN INDEPENDENT COMMISSIONER [email protected]

03.01.2022 A LAMB IS BORN ! THE MINI VITI SHEEP Blanco arrived on 2 Dec, to the relief of Fatih (his Wiltidoll Mum), Piccolomini II (his Harlequin Dad) and Number 26 (his Southdown Grandfather). Hes star, looking like a back pocket footballer from the rear but with the leap of a startled gazelle. We reckon no tailing , shearing, crutching or drenching sounds like a regime that viticulturists and horticulturists could come to enjoy. Theyll love managing their orchard f...loor without an arsenal of herbicides and will appreciate the non-GM breeding of the short-legged prime lambs. This superb little chap ticks all the boxes...but hes the only one weve got. How big hell get is unknown but his parents are well below 60cm at the shoulder, However we are able to supply a few young Harlequin and Wiltidoll rams to people wishing to start similar breeding programs with ewes of more conventional breeds. Let us know if you are interested.

02.01.2022 SILVERMINE AT THE FOOD FOREST! Despite bushfires, droughts, rain and floods, a remarkable nectarine variety discovered at The Food Forest will be on show and ready for its public test at the Adelaide Showground Farmers Market tomorrow 2 Feb 8am-1pm It is a new cultivar ...progeny of Goldmine, the Supremo in terms of traditional white nectarines, but it has a distinct apricot undertone. It is incredibly productive and over successive seasons has been disease-free... We are looking for feedback from the great unwashed public (you!) at this weeks market.....and we have lots of fruit available to take home and WOW your family. Nectarines are actually the same species as a peach (but without the fur). They are unbelievably fast growing and produce fruit in their 2nd or 3rd year. You dont really need a pollinator as they are self-fertile. Silvermine was simply grown from a stone, so why dont you add to our tree fruit diversity and plant a pip today! And join us for The Farmers Market at its peak of summer fruit and veg, straight from the farmer

01.01.2022 DUNNY LEADS BUSHFIRE RECOVERY EFFORT An autonomous toilet is the first thing Marc Webb and his family want to build, having lost the house on their permaculture farm at Cudlee Creek. You can make this vital step to recovery a reality by donating a small amount to THE DUNNY FUND to help erect a state-of-the-art composting toilet for the Webbs and all the volunteers who are helping with the recovery project They are living in a nearby rental property and continue to put big ef...fort into designing & ultimately building a bushfire-proof house and getting the farm back on its feet. Thanks in advance for any donation you can make, big or small. Kym Berry from EARTHSPIRATIONS (a key supplier of composting toilets in SA) has offered a Clivus Low Profile system that can be easily shifted if a new master-plan calls for relocation and he will personally contribute a solar kit and battery to create a really effective autonomous system that can be installed quickly, so that theres a loo during reconstruction of a dwelling and in the longer term, to support the learning & retreat activities and short courses Marc and his wife Rhiann will run. Were looking to raise something over $2150 so theres some cash to provide for a structure to house the loo. We are happy to act as the amalgamator of the money if you trust us. It would be very much appreciated if you could pledge an amount ASAP so we know roughly what funds are available for the project. Please email us ([email protected]) if you are able to participate. It would be good if your email could contain some words like NAME EMAIL. Ph.. I/we pledge $....... toward the provision of a composting toilet system to be erected at the property of Marc, Rhiann and Estelle Webb at Cudlee Creek. I will forward the funds to Graham Brookman by the end of February 2020 The amount you pledge will remain confidential. If the fund is oversubscribed the relevant donations will be refunded If you are set to donate now, please email us and we will respond Huge thanks Graham 0407771985
