22.01.2022 Being creative has always provided an outlet for Chrissy LoRicco but her latest endeavour has been the most cathartic of her life. The Colac South West TAFE vis...ual arts (textiles) student’s 2.7-metre high Linton Wings was inspired by her brother Matthew Armstrong’s death while volunteering as a CFA firefighter during the Linton fires in 1998. Linton Wings is on display at the F Project gallery in Warrnambool as part of the South West TAFE Colac Diploma of Visual Arts’ Braided textiles exhibition. It’s for sale but Mrs LoRicco doesn’t really mind if it doesn’t sell. Creating it felt like a load was off my shoulders, Mrs LoRicco said. I’d carried this thing inside me and needed to do something to express my feelings. This was a way for me to remember Matt and enjoy my life to its fullest and be thankful that I’m here. I’m not fussed if it sells; it was more about the therapeutic process of making. Linton Wings has already made its mark, winning the COPACC 2020 CrossXpollinatioN Adaptation Life Art prize. It will be on display at the F Project as part of Braided until November 22. On December 2, 1998, Matthew was one of five CFA volunteers killed near Linton when two tankers were trapped by a sudden wind change. One tanker successfully evaded the fire but Matthew’s Geelong West tanker was engulfed and destroyed. He was just 17 at the time. Mrs LoRicco said her artwork honours the memory of the fallen firefighters as brave angels weaved into its wings. It shows the tenuous relationship between life and death, she said. The black wing symbolises the loss of lives and Geelong West truck and the white wing symbolises the Geelong City truck that survived. The black wing is shielding the white wing in protection. Mrs LoRicco said doing the course at TAFE had given her confidence to do the piece. She has completed her certificate courses and is in the first year of her Diploma which she will complete in 2021. I have a side business, Wallknots Macrame, and saw an ad for the Visual Arts and Textiles course and thought it would be a good fit to expand on my own arts practice, she said. I absolutely love it. It was the best decision I've ever made for myself. This year has been a bit harder because we were working remotely but it has been my most successful year. It has given me a lot of creative confidence and my textiles teacher Sue Ferrari and my fellow students have been huge role models for me. Sue and the class are always inspirational and we have the best conversations and share ideas. Linton Wings was done as a 3D sculptural assignment at TAFE. I’ve always had this thing about my brother being an angel and I wanted to make some wings and thought of him and the whole story of Linton and it seemed to fit. At the time of the fire, Mrs LoRicco collected pieces of metal from the floor of her brother’s truck and has incorporated metal into the base of Linton Wings. I remember going a couple of days after it happened and there was all this metal; you can have a three-tonne fire truck and then it’s just ashes and melted metal. Mrs LoRicco describes herself as a busy mum, business owner, photographer, fibre artist and full-time student. She works in the family engineering business with her husband Travis who helped prepare the metal for the base and with moving the heavy artwork. I wasn’t going to enter it in CrossXpollinatioN and it wasn’t going to go to Warrnambool because I felt it was a bit of a hassle to cut the steel and reconstruct it so it could be pulled apart to transport. About two hours before entries closed, I decided to enter and see what happens. I’m pleased I changed my mind. Despite the tragedy, Mrs LoRicco remains a staunch supporter of Victoria’s CFA volunteers. She joined the Geelong West brigade as a junior when just 11. She moved to Colac in 2003 and joined the local volunteer Colac Fire Brigade about seven years ago. My dad, uncle, grandfather and brother were all CFA volunteers and I’ve always liked serving the community and volunteering, she said. Mrs LoRicco was initially attracted to junior competitions. I liked the running side of it, she said. I was a junior state champ with Matthew. We still hold a record to this day for the four-man striking first and second disc in 1995. Since starting the TAFE course, Mrs LoRicco has had to step back from her commitments and has been helping the Colac brigade as an operational support member in the background. Now Linton Wings is completed, Mrs LoRicco is philosophical about its future. It has already served its purpose. If it doesn’t sell, I might put it in the front paddock at our workshop and set it on fire and create photographic works of it. I’ve got nowhere to keep and store it but it was special experience just to create it. The exhibition is open Friday-Sunday 10am-4pm and online at www.thefproject.org.au.

21.01.2022 Love this painting of one of our stellar and regular volunteers! Give him a follow :) #Repost @paul_burman with @make_repost I painted Port Fairy Crash Repairs because I like the cracked, stepped façade of the building and the way the turquoise door pops out against the pinkish render; the broken pavement and stained bitumen, the grass and weeds asserting themselves on the nature strip. But most of all, I loved capturing the wonderful shadow thrown against the building b...y a concrete power pole. A matter of discovering the beauty in utility, perhaps. 18.01.2022 Braided open now! Friday to Sunday 10 - 4 @thefprojectarts #Repost @wallknotsmacrameco with @make_repost Hey friends, You may have noticed I’ve been a bit quiet on my page this year, I’ve been working hard behind the scenes juggling life, art and Tafe studies. Well I’ve got something cool to share with you all. ... My work Linton Wings was selected as a finalist for the @copacc_colacotway 2020 CrossXpollinatoN Adaptation Life Art prize. I was very excited to just be a finalist, however on Friday 6th November it unexpectedly won the major art prize, I’m still pinching myself. Linton Wings is currently on display right now for our end of year @swtafe exhibition BRAIDED at @thefprojectarts gallery in Warrnambool and can be viewed Friday to Sunday from 10am till 4pm. Congratulations to everyone in the arts community that entered work and were selected as finalists, many of them wonderful friends and colleagues who also have work featured in BRAIDED. Artist Statement There is a tenuous relationship between life and death. During the evening of 2 December 1998 two CFA tankers became trapped by fire. One successfully took survival action. The other was lost, engulfed and destroyed. Five volunteer firefighters died in their fire truck in the Linton bushfire in Victoria 22 years ago, lives were changed forever. The story of these brave angels is weaved into the wings, honoring my brother, one of five Geelong West firefighters who died after becoming entrapped by a wildfire after a change in wind direction on 2 December 1998.

Learning to sew and listening to their music, inspired me to create intuitively and channel my mood into bringing to life a series of Machine Embroidered portraits that documents and celebrates the most famous, flamboyant and larger than life greats of our music history. To this day their iconic status captures their image, style and stage presence, forever unique and instantly recognisable. Their music plays on long into decades and generations to come.
