25.01.2022 One of our rat catchers taking time out to warm up after a cool night.

22.01.2022 The fact that Coles has reneged and is giving out "free" plastic bags will not encourage responsible use of these bags. Join the war on plastic and let Coles know that this is not appropriate. We plan to boycott their stores in the future if they continue to be so irresponsible.

20.01.2022 ATTRACTING MORE THAN FROGS: A Slender Grape Vine (Cayratia clematidea) has grown amongst the vegetation we planted around our frog pond. This is a host plant of the beautiful, day-flying Joseph's Coat Moth (photo from brisbaneinsects.com). I photographed the caterpillar as it munched its way through the leaves of the vine.

19.01.2022 OUR SPECIAL WATTLES - With over 1000 species, the Acacia genus is the biggest group of trees and shrubs in Australia. It certainly is worthy of being our country's floral emblem. These are flowering on our property at the moment, giving a splash of colour for winter. Watch out for Wattle Day on 1st September!

17.01.2022 Put together a plant (Acacia irrorata) a caterpillar and some special ants and you come up with a beautiful butterfly. I was taking photos of the chrysalis and caterpillar with its attendant ants so I could ask someone from the Butterfly and Other Invertebrate Club what it might be, when a butterfly landed in front of me. The Imperial Hairstreak butterfly uses many types of wattle as a host plant but the female will only lay eggs if a particular type of black ant is present. These Kropotkin Ants protect the caterpillar from predators and parasites in return for nutritious secretions provided by the caterpillar.

16.01.2022 "The Very Hungry Caterpillar' is a popular book with children - my children loved it and are now reading it to their children. But, the book is a bit misleading.... caterpillars eat plants and each butterfly species has its own particular plant (or group of plants) on which its caterpillars feed. Here I have a group of Glasswing caterpillars on Passiflora aurantia (a Native Passion), a Clearwing Swallowtail caterpillar on Aristolochia meridionalis and a chubby Joseph's Coat Moth caterpillar on Cayratia clematidea (Slender Grape). Remember that every beautiful butterfly was once a caterpillar so don't worry about a few chewed leaves. And please, don't spray them with pesticides!!!

14.01.2022 Poleus ergonensis. This species is widespread across Queensland. It sends down an aerial root (sometimes two), which gives it stability, and tendrils reach out from the crown in search of another of the same species. Poleus ergonensis is permanently deciduous and does not flower or fruit. Apart from serving as a perch for an occasional bird, it does not provide habitat for any of our wildlife. You can imagine our dismay when we found that one was being planted in the small park across the road from our property in Blackbutt. The park was set up by a local environmental group in memory of one of the founding members and has been regularly cared for by us. There are only 2 things in Poelus ergonensis’s favour: it requires no water and is not affected by frost.

13.01.2022 Check out the Wildlife North Queensland page. They have some incredible photos.

13.01.2022 Which side of the path do you want to leave for your grandchildren? That was the theme of the FEAT stall at the recent Blackbutt Avocado Festival.

05.01.2022 We decided to set up our trail-camera, in the orchard area behind Pobblebonk Cottage, to see what was visiting. So far we have picked up a long-nose bandicoot, a black cat, red deer, wallaby and magpie (as well as a couple of possible small rats or big mice) - not bad for a couple of nights!

02.01.2022 Today is National Wattle Day. A special day for a special plant !!!

02.01.2022 The world has become addicted to single-use plastic with severe environmental consequences. Explore the extent of the issue and action you can take to #BeatPlasticPollution in this interactive.
