Carol, Claire and Paula have developed this challenge to highlight flower farmers across the UK and the world. Flowerfarmera challenge day 4. Your biggest compliment for 2020. ... That’s a hard one as there has been lots of lovely compliments from so many people, and I am so grateful for the lovely kind words that I have received. But I think the biggest compliment is that the flowers that I grow make people feel happy. I enjoy hearing that. Apparently flowers release happy brain chemicals ( oxytocin, dopamine and serotonin ) it actually goes back to our hunter-gather ancestors as flowers marked the end of winter and the coming of abundance. The other important thing about flowers is that they feed and provide medicines for insects, birds, animals and humans. 08.01.2022 A day in my life on the flower farm. Day 2 of the #flowerfarmerachallenge My day usually starts with the sound of little running feet on the verandah and gorgeous little voices calling out Nanna. I am engulfed in hugs and told wonderful stories of beautiful adventures. We wave Mum or Dad off and the day begins. ... We collect eggs, feed the chooks and Simba the black Shetland pony who eats way too much. We take my little blue whippet Jess for a run in the flower field and inspect the flowers and produce. We pick flowers for the farm shop and my florist deliveries for the day. There is always something to do and the children are so keen to learn. I hope memories of these days stay with them forever. We come inside for snacks and to check the sour dough bread rising on the bench. There is story telling, drawing, playing and more snacks and naps. After the children head home, usually dirty from their day, I head back into the flower field to continue my chores. I chose to flower farm so I can have this precious time with my grandchildren. As I am still developing my flower farm, I have been setting up flower beds and irrigation. It’s a different way of gardening to what I have been used to. Everything has to be planned and timed correctly to be successful, from seed ordering to germination in trays under lights to planting times, soil preparation and water rates. One eye is always on the weather, get it wrong and a tray of 100 seedlings may be scorched by a hot day a few days after planting. That happened! There is a lot of risk, but that is balanced by a lot of joy from seeing the first bloom for the season. It’s all still in the experimental stage, lots of reading, researching and deciding which processes to implement. Also trialling and testing different flowers and produce to see what grows well in my area. Then there is picking, arranging and delivering. When darkness falls I come inside to the flower studio and make dried flower creations and also go through catalogues, get inspiration from social media, plan what needs to be done the next day and then fall in to bed. My name is Lisa and I have a 2.5 acre flower farm in Tarrington, Victoria, Australia. I have only been flower farming... for a year, and thinking and planning for a few years beforehand. I have been a gardener my whole life and have been influenced by my mum who has always been able to create beautiful rambling gardens. I have 3 beautiful children and their partners and 6 gorgeous grandchildren who make the sun shine for me every day. I am also an Artist and have been teaching art from my studio and at schools for many years. I have always had a large garden and love being outside with my hands in the dirt. I love perusing gardening books and learning about growing plants and vegetables. I am very passionate about regenerative farming and growing produce in a chemical free environment. I want to leave this world a healthier place for future generations. I want my community to have access to locally grown fresh flowers and produce. I love flower farming and couldn’t think of a better job. 02.01.2022 How did I get here. Flowerfarmera challenge day 3. The idea of starting my flower farm business has been incubating for many years. It’s a collection of ideas, values and inspirations combined to form an ethical lifestyle. ... It’s a way to enjoy and support my children and their families, whilst still being able to earn a living. A sustainable, help the earth way of living. There was a lot of research and planning going on and when I found that the Daylesford area had a large group of flower farmers I set off with a friend to check them out. What I found was a thriving industry of like minded people, all working with their hands to create beautiful flowers whilst caring for their land, their people and their communities. Sprawling across the 2.5 acre block I call home; the flowers and goods that I grow are sold directly from my farm gate shop and to local florists and businesses. I use heritage and organic seeds to grow my produce in a chemical free environment. Using sustainable farming methods is really important to me. Instead of just maintaining the health of the soil, I want to make it better. It’s the only way to ensure that my children and grandchildren have a better world to live in. My love for gardening has been a constant for as long as I can remember. And the inspiration for it definitely comes from my Mum, she has the ability to design and create beautiful gardens. When I was younger, she had a subscription to the Grass Roots magazine, I loved reading it, I remember being so drawn to its down to earth approach and focus on natural wholistic methods. The influence from that fantastic magazine has stayed with me over the years and helped to shape the gardening and farming approaches I now implement. So that’s how I got here, although I think I still have a lot to learn and a long way to go, but I just focus on the task at hand and try not to think too far down the track. Savouring the minutes, my children and grandchildren and getting pleasure from the small things. Like a row of seeds germinating, a new batch of chickens hatching or the first bloom.
