25.01.2022 Standing in the same position for too long can be just as hard on your body as sitting for too long. Sitting is the most productive position for the type of wor...k a lot of us do. To increase movement and reduce the effects of prolonged sitting: - Change postures and positions. - Drink water for the bathroom breaks. - Take walking meetings and phone calls. - Choose the stairs. - Stretch and perform a few joint circles whenever you want. - Take lunch outside for a few minutes of walking and (hopefully) vitamin D. 22.01.2022 Rectus femoris is an important part of the quadriceps muscle that flexes the hip and extends the knee. It can also be troublesome for speed and kicking athletes. Making it long and strong can help build its load capacity and mitigate injuries. Lean backs, partial sissy squats and full sissy squats are progressively harder exercises you can use to train rectus femoris.
21.01.2022 Bilateral shoulder glenohumeral joint axial CARS (controlled articular rotations) with active abduction and 20kg weight plates to create rotational torque and increase muscle recruitment. If you push weights frequently, do lots of swimming or do an upper limb dominant sport, shoulder CARS can help to compensate for always performing reptitive movements in specific ranges of motion. Why learn joint CARS in general?? Read on...... All exercises in fitness are made up. Let that sink in. Why do we squat? Bench press? Stretch? Etc. Is it for looks? Performance? Health? Fun? Each exercise has benefits but these are specific, and the movements are made up. Excluding running/walking, no exercise is really more functional than the last other than for what it is made for e.g. moving a barbell. Nevertheless, the resultant gains in strength, control, bone density etc may be beneficial for your goals and health. And exercise is fun and everyone has different interests! Which is why we often devote hours to such pursuits every week doing specific made up exercises. However.... A lack of balance in such training programs and poorly executed repetitive movements can lead to adaptive tissue changes, injury or pathology. Is your training technique or regime going to be conducive to longer term musculoskeletal health? In the majority of cases our interpretation of a balanced fitness regime does not consider our ongoing joint and connective tissue health. What our joints, muscles and nervous system crave is VARIABILITY. Performing regular CARS exercises compensates for the LACK of variability in our movements or the highly specific ways in which we train, work, compete. Like brushing your teeth, CARS are the equivalent of brushing your joints. So there you have it. CARS help to compensate for the lack of variability in our movement, with the aim of maintaining and improving our joint health now and into the future. Good preventative maintenance that fosters independence, not fads and shams. Credit to Functional Anatomy Systems for knowledge and principles applied. This video is for educational purposes - If you have musculoskeletal pain or dysfunction please talk to a health professional before commencing a therapeutic exercise regime. #thegapphysio #fastlanetraining #CARS #ControlledArticularRotations #controlyourself #jointhealth #functionalanatomysystems

19.01.2022 Start them young! Our friend Valerie Fox from Healthy Fox Massage noticed her daughter Lilou copying her morning CARS routine (controlled articular rotations). Well done Lilou!
18.01.2022 Fundamental movement patterns and sensory integration are important to train not only in athletes but also as part of injury rehab for everyday indiduals - particularly for the elderley who are at an increased risk of falls and are fearful of challenges to balance. Here, Marty is tandem walking on a beam with head turns, both forwards and backwards. This challenges his proprioceptive and vestibular systems. Think this is easy? Give it a go, its more challenging than you may think! Tag an athlete who can benefit from balance training. #thegapphysio #fastlanetraining #balance #sensoryintegration #controlyourself

14.01.2022 Coming into off-season? This is the time to step away from your sport to give the body a break and focus on weaknesses and basics that can be improved. Basic fundamentals are the prerequisite to any sport at any level, however fundamentals can be easily adjusted and increased with slight complexities to challenge anybody.... It doesnt need to be heavy or fast to challenge coordination and control. Simple to complex can be stable to unstable or static to dynamic. Risk vs Reward and is it purposeful for what you need to be able to do? #FASTLANETRAINING #thegaphysiotherapy #functionalrangesystems #functionalrangeassessment #functionalrangerelease #frcmobilityspecialist #Kinstretch

13.01.2022 Musculoskeletal health, physical fitness/performance and injury management all centre on LOAD and CAPACITY - something we talk about frequently in the clinic. There really arent any quick fixes for pain and dysfunction - physiology shows us that progressive neurological and tissue adaptation are the only way to produce sustained, measurable and meaningful improvements in physical function. And LOAD and CAPACITY are governing forces in this process. This great video from Run...ning Reform explains the concepts of LOAD and CAPACITY and how they relate to musculoskeletal health and injuries within part of a biopsychosocial framework. #TheGapPhysio #Load #Capacity #Injury #FunctionalRangeConditioning https://vimeo.com/339686848

09.01.2022 The term "functional fitness" is one of the most misapplied concepts in exercise science. Fact is, virtually all exercises can be "functional" depending on the ...context. For the majority of the population, simply getting stronger, regardless of the exercise employed, will enhance functional capacity. Ultimately, the functional transfer of an exercise exists on a continuum, with certain exercises having greater applicability than others based on individual goals and abilities. And just because a given exercise may provide greater functional transfer for a given person doesnt necessarily mean that the other exercise is "nonfunctional." We need to stop thinking in binary terms when it comes to exercise prescription; the answer to almost every applied exercise question is, "It depends." - Brad Schoenfeld See more
08.01.2022 Hello all and happy festive season! I would like to demonstrate some of the systems we use and I use to help clients be able to move freely and with plenty of choice to be able to do physical tasks. Here Marty is guiding a client through some passive standing hip CARs so that the balance work we do after can be be done with optimal choice. This gentlemen is retired and in his 70s, so having physical independence and a good ability to move through life is highly Important. T...he balance training is incredibly important but more importantly at the end of the video is a classic example of why joint optimisation is so important in helping us as humans. My highlight is how he exits once balance is lost but has the choice to move to prevent a bad fall. To gain balance you need to out of balance with good feed back from your joints to the brain to detect changes in body position. #FASTLANETRAINING #thegaphysiotherapycentre #functionalrangesystems #FRA #FR #FRCmobiityspecialist #Kinstretch See more

06.01.2022 How much focus do you or your kids place on movement essentials to play sport or even have the necessary foot work to help prevent falls for the non athlete? Here is an example of the movement progressions I will focus on in a session to help athletes move and step more fluently while gradually increasing complexity (intensity & load). I have found over the last decade little focus is given to the fundamental movements in all sports from youth to semi professional.... In this video I am working with an athlete who has a good base which allows us to incorporate more complexity than what I am able to do with the majority. My focus as a coach here is to help control his power. Sport is a highly complex activity and requires both a certain amount of mobility (strength +flexibility ) as well as the ability to execute fundamental movements (foot work) when required. Often these days sport training is one dimensional and does not improve the ability to actively control ones body (left foot, right foot, body control, Transitional balance) Train to train! #thegapphysiotherapycenter #FASTLANETRAINING #prerequisites #multidirectionalcombativesports #fundamentals @Martin(Marty)Lane #twistperformancemastertrainer #FRCmobilityspecialist #FRA #athleticdevelopment #Kinstretchlevel1instructor
