13.01.2022 Are grasshoppers a problem in your garden? Whilst I recommend a range of stategies, I am always keen to hear of now ways to deter these pests without resorting to nasty chemicals. Encourage the birds, they are the natural predators. My first line of defence is to put up a barrier - use mosquito or similar netting to cover your most precious plants from the marauders. Check regularly for the occasional beastie inside the net and squish them. Manually squishing the grasshoppers may control them - get up early to catch them in the cool of the morning when they are slow. A chilli brew may deter them; blend 1/2 cup chilli with 2 cups of water, allow this to ferment for 24 hours. Dilute the mixture and add a few drops of dish washing liquid before spraying on the target plant. Test the concentrations for effectiveness.
