25.01.2022 Been getting back in the swing of getting to our local farmers markets on a Saturday. It’s so worth it. After getting our fruit from Real Food Farm Gate last week, not one piece of fruit came home uneaten in a lunchbox. Sonny was stoked with the capsicums from the beautiful people at @realfoodfarmgate this morning and has already eaten 2 before the haul could be packed away

22.01.2022 Found these curious little #fungi growing on a log in the patch this week. After looking them up I learned they are #birdsnestfungi and are completely harmless. They are usually found tightly packed together growing in litter particularly if some dung is present. The outside of the fruiting body of this species is hairy and fawn-colored, becoming grey. In the base there are the eggs or peridioles, which are splashed out by rain drops. I think theyre kind of cute

22.01.2022 Spending my Monday afternoon tea break reminiscing about weekend bush walks. Im a bit taken with Birds Nest Ferns, might have to get some. #birdnestfern #bushwalkingqld #naturetherapy #springbrooknationalpark

22.01.2022 Our #nativestinglessbees are busy this morning! Sort of wish I could abandon adulting and watch them all day

22.01.2022 It can feel like renting a property and growing an edible garden are incompatible. There are lots of ways around the barriers to growing your own vegetables when renting. Weve explored a few of them in this blog post.

20.01.2022 The Qld Garden Expo has been an institution on the annual event circuit for 35 years. Alas in 2020 that continuous run has been halted with the announcement tha...t the alternate date later in the year proposed when the usual July date was postponed is no longer possible. For all the exhibitors and presenters the Expo is a really special event and like catching up with family each year. Marion and the organising team work incredibly hard to make the event happen and like any annual gathering the anticipation is something we all come to expect when July rolls around. As a way of keeping the flame flickering in 2020 there is a series of talks taking place online over the weekend. The timetable of talks is included in the attached photos that capture just a hint of what we get up to ar the Expo each year. Presenter regulars will be doing talks online here on Facebook and the talks can be viewed live or afterwards on replay anytime. From Gardening Australia you can hear talks with Sophie Thomson and Jerry Coleby-Williams, theres Phil Dudman (Gardening) and Claire Bickle Gardening for the GoodLife, Hortiman Matthew Carroll, Arno King ,Peter Heaton,Anne Gibson, Peter young and Kevin Redd talking everything from fruit trees to turmeric, raising veggie seedlings to irrigation, native plants for bees and urban spaces, planting a kitchen garden and general garden Q & A. Ill be having a chat this morning at 930am taking you on a tour of an inner Sydney Community Garden and looking at lots of simple and positive elements you can use at home or in your community plot. And on Sunday at 1130am doing a garden tour tomorrow and talking all things verge gardening and urban growing, making the most of the space youve got.. Jump on the Expo page to watch replays of talks anytime. Heres to the 2021 reunion for everyone involved with this long standing national garden event . 20.01.2022 *T-shirts* After being asked for so long, we have finally made some of our bee designs available as t-shirts on Redbubble. You can find our new Redbubble shop h...ere: https://www.redbubble.com/people/BeesScientific/shop. For now we have designs of the Australian stingless bee Austroplebeia australis, and the worlds biggest bee Megachile pluto. But stay tuned for designs of some more Australian bee species being available soon (were just finishing drawing a couple). Loads of different styles and colours to choose from for each design. Its pretty easy. You choose your style, size and colour and then order and they send it to your door. We hope you like the designs :) Toby and Veronica (by the way, those cool looking models in the photo are not us...) See more

20.01.2022 I remember both my Grandmothers growing sweet peas when I was a child. Their charm is etched in my memory along with custard tarts, knitted socks and morning visits to refill the bird feeder. Leading up to my Grandmothers birthday month, I decided to grow sweet peas myself this year.

12.01.2022 We keep the watering can at the backdoor to collect leftover water from meal prep and cooking. I’ll then put the water onto our plants, mainly seedlings at the ...moment and house plants. Some micronutrients are left behind when vegetables or something like pasta are cooked in water. It’s an affordable zero-waste fertiliser. 08.01.2022 Compost cat! Our #ragdollcat Juniper is only allowed outside under supervision and she often makes a beeline for the compost pile. Maybe because its warm? Maybe shes just a little grub at heart? #ragdollkitten #composting

04.01.2022 Apparently its going to rain this week, but Im giving my potted plants a drink just in case it doesnt. Might be because I couldnt resist using my new Haws watering can! Love that Haws refer to it as the #peterrabbit style and these watering cans are still made by hand, theyve been making them since 1886! If youre tempted we have them in our online store. https://thegardengate.com.au//haws-9l-traditional-metal-pl

03.01.2022 First time weve been patient enough to pull decent carrots! (Andy added sand to the soil this time too, which probably helped them grow straight) #growyourownfood #backyardveggies #gardeningismytherapy #love #gardenlife

01.01.2022 Happy Monday Fellow Garden Lovers! Throwback pic of our (now 8 year old) creature exploring the patch. This was in a rental property where the landlord was ok w...ith us converting lawn to garden beds...which in our renting experience was rare. Ive done a little round up of articles and resources about growing edible gardens when renting and posted on our website. Link is in comments. Hope everyone is having a cracking start to the week. - Skip See more
