17.01.2022 Super pleased these White Paper Birch Tree seeds (flown in from USA) have successfully germinated after 60days cold scarification in the fridge. Perhaps not the best time to germinate tree seedlings with the approaching winter here in Sydney but if they make it through till Spring they may have a good head start, come the next growing season.

11.01.2022 The "Living-Room" tour. This Balcony garden by Laura Khalil and Daniel Rosenbaum is an exploration on how to fill an apartment balcony with plant life. There are obvious challenges when caring for this much plant life in a confined space over several years. This 3 year old balcony garden is evolving constantly, plus we also have the luxury of being able to come and go with new plants as we choose because we also own a small hobby nursery near the coast where we have more spac...e to store surplus plants. We tend to keep our nicest plants on the balcony when they are looking good or about to flower then if they become tired or no longer suit the space, we take them away to the nursery and try something new. Ideally however we have been trying to select plants that can stay permanently to see how they establish in pots in a space that has its challenges. Challenges include ocasional high winds, sunlight from one dominant side (which means that some plants need rotating to stop them leaning over), watering and repotting requiments, also we have found that insects, worms, birds, lizards and spiders are attracted which is a joy to study but can be a challenge to clean up. For example.. if ants build a home in a pot plant we have found that by giving it a good shake and disturb the nest enough times evemtually they will move else where. Curl Grubs we often have to remove by repotting and putting the grubs under a large tree elsewhere. All this ongoing maintenance takes considerable time, especially watering each pot (we use watering cans and spray bottles for the vertical gardens up to 10 x 9lcans a day in hot weather). Watering the plants by hand becomes a ritual that is so enjoyable, its the time when each plant can be observed and checked for new growth, fruit and fragrance. Another maintenance job we find is from sand/silt that drips to the floor and slowly builds up after many weeks of watering so this requires a good sweep from time to time. So if youre thinking to do this on your balcony you may prefer to use more drip trays. We just let the floor get wet and do a big clean from time to time. Its a lot of work but it brings us great joy and wonder to closely observe garden life in our "living-room".
