25.01.2022 "I actually had a good year in 2020, because I had some of the best moments. I went camping for three days!" We love Sayana's reflections on 2020. Sometimes the small moments are the silver linings that help us get through the challenges #2020reflections

23.01.2022 Enjoying the late afternoon sunshine with a game of Austag The longer days have been great for our Monday youth sports nights. Each week, roughly 15 of our teens join us as we try new sports and get active.

22.01.2022 A huge shout out to FORD MILLINERY for donating over 200 reusable masks to our families. We'll be distributing these to families through our GBB pantry packs this Thursday. We have lots of conversations with our kids, youth and families on how we can keep the GBB COVID-safe. Now we can all stay COVID-safe in style!

21.01.2022 Ice cream melting, paint covered hands, chasing after your friends. They're the happy memories of creating trouble that all young Australians should have. That's why our vacation care program is back from Christmas and back in business. We've got an action-packed schedule designed to take kids in need out of their comfort zone and give them new experiences. Bring on the long sunny days of making slime, eating delicious fruit and letting our imaginations run wild Watch this space to see all the exciting adventures we'll be getting up to!

21.01.2022 Entrepreneurial spirit shining strong Mr Cecil set up a Christmas card making activity in Vacation Care the other day. Zoe and her friends started making creative cards with funny puns like "We woof you a Merry Christmas" Mr Cecil suggested the girls set up a Christmas shop to sell their homemade cards to other members of the Brigade. Zoe was the boss, in charge of sales, and her 3 friends made the stock. ... As soon as they opened, there was a long queue. The price for the cards ranged from one monopoly dollar to one thousand. The stock quickly sold out and the girls had to rush to make more. So many kids wanted the cards. Some to give to their Mums, others to write secret messages asking to be each other's friends. Disaster struck when some of the boys got involved and began stealing the money. So Zoe and her friends opened "the Merry Bank" with CCTV cameras and all to protect their business. By 3pm, the shop shut, the girls now tired of spending the whole morning playing and they sat watching the Grinch over afternoon tea.

16.01.2022 Imagine watching the tv through a shop window or by loitering in a hotel doorway. This was the undesirable habit of the Brigade Boys before we bought our first TV set in 1957. Not only was the new tv immensely popular with the boys, it also meant we could show entertaining and educational movies in a safe space. ... Since then, the size of our TV screens has grown but our love for watching movies on a Friday afternoon has never waned. #FlashbackFriday #aussiefilm

16.01.2022 Move over Elton John, there's a new Pinball Wizard's in town . Our kids love winning new high scores on our classic arcade games after-school care. Plus it also helps build their hand-eye coordination and teaches them co-operation and sharing as they each take their turn trying to win the title of champion. #afternoonfun #afterschoolcare

15.01.2022 Love them or hate them, we never have problems getting our kids to eat fairy bread and sausage rolls. These classic Aussie snacks are a perfect treat to give our kids a boost of energy after a day of learning. We even make it healthy by home-making the sausage rolls and serving with fruit. Once every crumb has been devoured, there's no stopping them from running around in the basement all afternoon.... #fairybread #strayamate #aussiesummer

14.01.2022 #FlashbackFriday In the early days of the Brigade, being taken on an outing around Sydney was a special treat. Members of the brigade often had never left the boundaries of the inner-city and excursions were their only chance to explore Greater Sydney. In 1970, a picnic to Ku-ring-gai Chase was orgaised by our Supervisor at the time, Mr Dudley. The lads ran wild in the bush, delighted to be away from the city and in nature - For most, it was their first visit to the National... Park! At the end of the day, they were treated to a hot home-cooked meal and they sat telling ghost stories by an open log fire. Pictured: Six lucky lads on a picnic excursion to Ku-ring-gai Chase.

13.01.2022 First visit to the Sydney Opera House for many of our kids! "Sitting next to the kids, they were full of laughter watching The Listies's Hamlet: Prince of Skidmark show. But they were even more amazed by the fancy bathrooms at the Opera House! For many, it was their first taste of live theatre and Shakepeare. It was great to see the kids confidently participating in the show, eager to offer Shakespearean insults and join the actors on the stage."... Thanks Miss Emma for sharing these moments from last weeks excursion.

13.01.2022 Last month, our annual Charity Golf Day raised over $126,000. This will go towards the launch of resilience-focused workshops for children, youth and their families in 2021. Thank you to our golf committee and everyone who volunteered, played and supported us on the day. We couldn't have done it without you

12.01.2022 Our programs team have been renewing their First Aid Certificates this week Their courses looked quite different to the first aid courses that St John First Aid taught to the Brigade back in 1926. Back then, up to 40 boys were selected from our Surry Hills and Pyrmont branches to be taught elementary first aid each year. Lots have things have changed since then, but our commitment to safety hasn't!

10.01.2022 #throwback to last year when we took the kids on an excursion to Berry Island for a tour with Koori Kinnections. The kids enjoyed seeing the shell middens, and learning about bush tucker. This #NAIDOCWeek2020, we're celebrating the rich indigenous history and culture around us. Always was, always will be.

10.01.2022 I’m looking forward to bringing value to the board and playing a role in its ongoing work especially given the family connection with publishing," he told us. "I love that the GBB, supported by a compassionate and professional staff, provides a safe place for education and recreation for children and youth." Welcome our newest boardmember, Andy Fairfax! We've been supported by the Fairfax family since Sir James Fairfax established our organisation in 1882. Andy is proud to be following in the family tradition.

09.01.2022 "I prefer GBB camps to our school camps. We get to spend more time relaxing together. It's like going on a family holiday but with my friends as well." Evie, 18. Last weekend we took our year 12 students to Pearl Beach for a farewell camp. It was a chance to relax after the stresses of the HSC and they went on bushwalks, swam at the beach and pampered themselves with face masks. It was an emotional weekend as they reflected on their time at the Brigade but they also enjoyed ...making new memories and reflecting on the exciting opportunities the future holds. #youthcamps #makingadifference #gbbsurryhills

02.01.2022 Last night there were many attempts by our Youth and Mr Bill to hit a Hole in One at Moore Park Golf. Unfortunately, no one was successful but we all had fun trying !

01.01.2022 "GBB are a family for me, they are very supportive and they understand me. I've never had this before, it's everything to me. It's the place where I get my support. They ask me how I am and they mean it... it's so lovely." - Marie, GBB mother. Thank you to everyone who donated this Christmas to give a helping hand to families in need. We reached our goal and were able to provide much-needed support as well as spread the Christmas joy throughs hampers and gifts to Marie and families like hers.
