22.01.2022 According to a City of Sydney Council article, the mangroves at Federal Park are a good place to find the ‘hard-to-spot’ striated heron. If you see one, try to take a photo and send it to [email protected].

20.01.2022 Letter to the Sydney Morning Herald, 1 January: "Glebe is only two kilometres from the Sydney Town Hall and is Australia’s most intact inner-city 19th century suburb ...Now the NSW Land and Housing Corporation plans to trash this 50-year legacy of good public policy and town planning."

15.01.2022 Yesterday’s announcement from the NSW Treasurer and Transport Minister that they intend to demolish the historic White Bay Power Station is an obscene threat wh...ich, if carried out, would constitute a crime against the heritage of Sydney. This landmark industrial site is heritage listed and is of enormous heritage and historic value. Any attempt to destroy the Power Station, will be met with maximum resistance, including through the Courts if necessary. The Treasurer told Parliament yesterday that the Power Station is a shocking building that should be knocked down like the Sirius Building. This absurd statement demonstrates a deep ignorance of Sydney’s history and of the Government’s obligations under planning legislation. In 2016 the Government themselves announced that the Power Station and the surrounding Bays Precinct would be transformed into a high tech jobs precinct and a world leading example of urban renewal. They promised to create Sydney’s own silicon valley at White Bay but now intend to deliver only a pile of rubble by the sea. The White Bay Power Station was in fact Google’s preferred location for their Australian Headquarters, a proposal which didn’t proceed only because of the Government’s stubborn refusal to provide any public transport into the precinct. In recent years Government has received dozens of proposals, from some of the Australia’s most reputable architects, for adaptive reuse of the Power Station, which could be converted for a variety of commercial, artistic and community uses. White Bay Power Station was also the film set for Baz Lurman’s the Great Gatsby. Inner West Council will fight alongside our local community to protect this unique site from the Government’s thuggery and for the adaptive reuse of the Power Station instead.
13.01.2022 Great write up in City Hub by Allison Hore of our 'Glebe Island Bridge - Give It Back' rally. #glebeislandbridge
12.01.2022 Walter Liberty Vernon was a Federation Architect who was responsible for many well-known buildings including Central Station and Maclaurin Hall at the University of Sydney. In Glebe, Vernon's work includes parts of Glebe Public School and the Glebe Fire Station. Historic Houses Association of Australia is hosting an online seminar (free for members; $10 for non-members) called Seeking Out Walter Liberty Vernon: Monuments of Art and a Distinctly Australian Architecture. The seminar will take place on Thursday 3 December 2020 from 12.30 pm 2.00 pm.

07.01.2022 Momentum is growing for the restoration of Glebe Island Bridge and The Glebe Society plans to give it a good push. Proposals to restore the Glebe Island Bridge for use as a walkway and cycle path are mounting. The latest is from the McKell Institute, which has proposed an active transport path linking the Opera House and Paramatta along the harbour foreshores and southern bank of the Parramatta River. Read more about this on our website. https://www.glebesociety.org.au/momentum-is-growing-for-th/
05.01.2022 City of Sydney Council plans to adjust the boundaries of the St Phillips Heritage Conservation Area to exclude 2A-2D Wentworth Park Road and 17-31 Cowper Street to enable their demolition and replacement by two eight-storey apartment buildings. We believe the proposal flies in the face of over five decades of exemplary planning in Glebe whereby historic character was conserved, utility improved, and additional housing provided, without destroying the spirit of place. The Society recognises the urgent need for social housing, however this proposal which provides for only 15 net additional social housing bedrooms, can only be described as inept, retrograde, and corrosive. Read more about this bad idea on our website. City of Sydney #heritage
03.01.2022 If you'd like to see Glebe Island Bridge returned to the public, sign this petition. It will be presented to local council members and Transport for NSW in the hope that the community, its representatives and the Government bodies that have the potential to make an extraordinary public space are able to work together in achieving something exceptional. #glebeislandbridge https://www.change.org/p/transport-for-nsw-glebe-island-bri
01.01.2022 You may have seen the recent record-breaking sales of Glebe properties, 5 Victoria Rd and 1 Alexandra Lane, which adjoin Jubilee Park. These houses were once owned by some colourful racing identities (well, harness racing, anyway). https://www.glebesociety.org.au/who-lived-in-your-street/
