25.01.2022 This guy... How lucky are we to have folks like Tim and the crew from Gippslandia doing their thing in our neighbourhood?

If you have accommodation to share with those who need a place to stay, or you are fire affected and need a place to stay, then check out https://www.airbnb.com.au//disaster-re/victoriabushfires20... So great to see Gippslandians pulling together despite this tragedy of unprecedented scale. Stay strong and lean on one another.

24.01.2022 How do we think our way through the messes we’re in when the way we think is part of the mess? - Nora Bateson Calling all Gippslandians: skill up to solve some of our region’s most wicked problems.

20.01.2022 If we were the boil down to the very essence of The Gloaming podcast, the main idea-thread that we wanted to explore through conversation, then it is this: participation. Even more specifically, It’s about participation in the local. In times when our newsfeeds are saturated with record levels of bullshit about all manner of things that are so far removed from our everyday lives, it’s easy to forget how much power we have to act and make change at the local level. You are not... a customer. You are not a consumer. You are not a voter. You are a citizen of this place we call Gippsland, a traveller in Gunaikurnai, Boon Wurrung and Bunurong country. You are a mother, a father, a partner or companion, a grandparent, a son or daughter, a sister or brother, a friend, a neighbour, a teammate, a colleague. And what you choose to do in this place today, matters. It really matters. Thank you to Tim from Voiceclub and Daniel from Emerge podcast for this conversation.

20.01.2022 The strength of community comes from its ability to collaborate, to make sense of the world together, and to solve problems and create a future together. Want to upskill and be a part of building a strong, collaborative community? Check this out:... The acclaimed MIT is now offering a free online interactive course called U.LAB: LEADING FROM AN EMERGING FUTURE. The course starts next week! It’s aimed at activating our capacity to lean into the emerging future and co-create projects and practices for creating institutional innovations that generate wellbeing in society. Will we see you in there?

17.01.2022 We’ve started a blog! And here’s our first post. Stay tuned for more in the weeks ahead... It may serve us well to recognise that people who feel safe, supported and prepared tend not to stockpile three hundred rolls of toilet paper. The bare shelves carry an unspoken message from the hearts of those who emptied them: we don’t feel resilient. And fair enough, because how many people actually have a back-up plan if their day-to-day routine is unpended? Not me.

16.01.2022 We'll be joining the 'What's your 2040?' community conversation tonight at the library in Drouin, hosted by the Baw Baw Sustainability Network. James and Angelo are pulling together an episode in the weeks ahead which is all about how Gippslandians are answering this question. And we'd love to hear from you. Your first chance to get on board is to join the community conversation this evening. We hope to see you down there! :)

16.01.2022 NEW EPISODE: Resilience in the time of COVID-19 We started this podcast exactly two years ago to talk about resilience in an uncertain times. We had some understanding of the kinds of challenges we might face in the future, but we weren’t really thinking of a pandemic back then. And now here we are...... We’ve brought back one of our most popular guests, Professor Daniel P. Aldrich, to talk about what resilience looks like in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Thanks to Daniel for his time and generosity. We know you’ll find his perspective insightful and useful to help navigate the weeks and months ahead. If you want to jump straight to our chat with Daniel, go to the 24 minute mark. Please share this widely and encourage your communities to maintain solidarity, even while being physically apart. Stay safe, Gippslandians!

15.01.2022 Our next episode comes out of a conversation with Rhia Nix who together with her husband Francesco run Trulli Woodfire Pizzeria, Gusto Gelateria and The Pantry and Cellar in Meeniyan. A real insight into the challenges faced by Gippsland small businesses responding and adapting to the impacts of COVID-19. Stories about community and simplicity and how they are the ‘special sauce’ making us more resilient. ... Be a hero...stay home!! 15.01.2022 Given the converging crises in our future, what will West Gippsland look like in 2040? The Baw Baw Sustainability Network are hosting a community conversation to find out the answer. What does your 2040 look like?

14.01.2022 Well done to the team at Gippslandia for this marvellous creation! Such an uncompromisingly high quality book featuring some of the best culinary talents our region has to offer. 13.01.2022 "Trading fragility for efficiency is a bad trade. It works great in the short term but will always collect in the end." - Jordan Hall We've built an economy which has handed over to the market so many of the things that are fundamental to the wellbeing of people, families and communities. Healthcare, childcare, care for the elderly, education, food supply, and so on. ... Because the market is incentivised to seek efficiency for the sake of better margins, we have squeezed these services to run as lean as possible, to be delivered just-in-time. The benefit is cheaper products and services delivered where you need them and when you need them. And that works well... until it doesn't... One thing the COVID-19 crisis should make abundantly clear to us is that efficiency always comes at the cost of resilience. Efficient systems are also inherently fragile systems. If our wellbeing depends on these systems, why on earth would we knowingly continue to do things that make them fragile? Take a look at Jordan Hall's assessment of the bigger picture.

08.01.2022 In case you missed yesterday’s post... episode 15 is out, and we think it’s a gem. James spoke with Nora Bateson, an award-winning filmmaker, writer, systems thinker and driving force behind Warm Data. Our world is packed with complex systems. Our communities, our economies, our agricultural systems, our bodies... the list goes on. Nora’s focus is to help people and communities to see that complexity with fresh eyes so that we might avoid the mistakes of the past and pursue ...projects grounded in a deep understanding of the living world. What’s more... Nora is coming to town soon to train changemakers and placemakers to help do exactly that for their own communities. 05.01.2022 YES YOU, GIPPSLANDIAN! WE WANT YOUR VOICE ON THIS PODCAST! We're creating an episode of The Gloaming podcast in which you will be the guest, and we want to know your answer to one question:... What could 2040 look like for your community? We often talk about the challenges we face as a region. Indeed, when it comes to the question of what our future will look like, it seems the only thing that is certain is change. But what might that change look like? Taking a lead from the new film '2040' by Damon Gameau, we want know what you think your own patch of Gippsland could be like in 2040 if we applied our best selves, our best ideas, and our best technologies in the years ahead. What might your town look like? Who would make those decisions? What would your neighbourhood be like? How about our transportation systems? What might your relationships with your community be like? Where would you source your food from? What would power your home and vehicle? Sound like fun? If you'd like your vision of 2040 featured in an upcoming episode of The Gloaming podcast, here's what you need to do: *Record up to 1 minute of digital audio (on your phone, computer, etc) OR write up to 150 words, telling us about your 2040. *In your audio or written submission, please be sure to tell us 1) your name, 2) who you are, 3) where you're from, and 4) your vision for your own patch of Gippsland in 2040. *If you've recorded audio, please make sure you play it back through headphones or earphones to make sure the recording is as clear as you can manage. * Email your submission to [email protected] by no later than Friday 2 August. We're looking forward to bringing you a 2040 vision that includes all Gippslandians. p.s. If you haven't already, you should totally check out the film. But we'd still welcome your submissions even if you haven't seen it yet.
