13.01.2022 In honour of International Women’s Day I’d like to introduce you to Indra Devi, fondly known as ‘the first lady of yoga’. Born in Latvia, she moved to India ...in 1927, and was the first woman (and westerner) to study with the ‘father of modern yoga’, Indian yoga master T. Krishnamacharya. It took a lot of convincing for her to be allowed to study at the time it was believed that only male bodies could master yogic poses and handle the strict discipline that traditional teaching demanded. Devi learnt yoga and in 1939 held the first ever yoga class in China, eventually opening China’s first yoga school. In 1948 she introduced yoga to America when she opened a yoga studio in LA, and even published a book called ‘Yoga for Americans’. Her students in America included Hollywood movie stars, who helped to make her programs successful, but it was her encouraging and non-judgemental nature that drew people to her. Indra Devi brought a woman’s perspective to what had been a man’s world and aimed to give love to everyone. Keep her in your thoughts if you’re practicing today. See more
