21.01.2022 On the anniversary of the end of WW2 we remember the Indigenous and South Sea Islander service people who took part in every Australian overseas military action.... At the time of WW2 the Indigenous people were not citizens, were not counted in the census and had no vote. They served honorably in the armed forces and when they returned they found that the reserves where they had farmed and were often self sufficient had been reduced in size to provide soldier settler blocks for returned service people. They weren't eligible to apply. See more

14.01.2022 Beulah organized a Naidoc week service at St Marks in 2018. The flyer had a picture of the Buderim Reconciliation cross surrounded by the names of the First Pe...ople and Islander families that went to Buderim School. When a multifaith chapel was established at Prince Charles Hospital their cross was surplus to requirements. One of the chaplains, Judy Burt, gave it to Beulah. Kim Spittles carved and painted it. On the vertical arm is a snake with alternating black and white footprints symbolizing walking together. The horizontal arm depicts the sacred monoliths on Buderim's skyline. On the left side are the Glasshouse Mountains to the south. On the right Ninderry, Coolum, and Old Woman Island to the north. In the center is an image of the sacred women's place, Buderim Falls. The waterways represent the rivers of tears and blood that divide Australia's First and Second peoples. Because some Christians are unhappy about the mixing of cultural symbols in this way there was a bit of concern that it might cause offence. In the service, the gospel reading for the day included John 3v15 'as Moses lifted up the bronze snake on a pole in the desert, in the same way the Son of man must be lifted up'. This was reassuring. When Dave Larkin saw the cross he felt a connection to it. He had life saving emergency surgery at Prince Charles a few years before, and had been baptized and married at Buderim Falls. The Larkin's house was built by the Westaway family who were first settlers on a large pastoral lease near Aussie World. At that time the pastoral leases were on the front line of the Frontier Wars. Many homesteads, as in Yandina Station to the north, were fortified bastions where First People were shot on sight, poisoned and massacres were organized. Many first settlers at Buderim including the Westaways, while still exploiting their First People's cheap labor, treated their workers more humanely. The Westaways advocated for their stockman Charlie Chilli (jnr) when he was removed to Taroom. This resulted in his getting an exemption and returning to Buderim. Charlie Chilli was an ancestor of Lyndon Davis who spoke at the service. After the service we installed the cross on the Larkin's verandah. See more

14.01.2022 On the 250th anniversary of Captain James Cook claiming for the British crown the Eastern part of Australia after having sailed up the coast in 1770 we remember... his secret instructions from the British Admiralty which included 'to observe the Genius, Temper, Disposition and Number of the Natives, if there be any and endeavor by all proper means to cultivate a Friendship and Alliance with them,. making them presents of such Trifles as they may Value inviting them to Traffick, and Shewing them every kind of Civility and Regard; taking care however not to suffer yourself to be surprised by them, but to be always upon your guard against any Accidents. You are also with the Consent of the Natives to take Possession of Convenient Situations in the Country in the Name of the King of Great Britain: Or: if you find the Country uninhabited take Possession for his Majesty by setting up Proper Marks and Inscription, as first discoverers and possessors.' (in the National Library). In these days of truth telling and learning a bigger, more inclusive history than the one we learnt at school, and the removal of historical monuments, Cook is in the firing line. He was certainly a gifted navigator and by all accounts a decent man. He is a famous son of Whitby where he is honored. His legacy in Australia is decidedly tarnished. I suppose he had an impossible brief. At the Green House we celebrate the 7th century Hilda of Whitby. She was an Anglo Saxon royal who had embraced the Celtic Christian tradition. She was the abbess of a monastery for men and women at Whitby. She was a wise leader and peacemaker, trusted by leaders of both sides of big political and religious debates of her time. She hosted the Synod of Whitby. She also was a friend of the poor in her local community. Under her patronage, an illiterate cowherd, Cadmon, became a popular English vernacular singer, songwriter at a time when educated people communicated in Latin. It seems she 'observed the genius, Temper, and Disposition of the Natives and cultivated Friendships and Alliances with them'. We'll keep her monument.

08.01.2022 We remember Aidan who was an Irish monk. He led a mission from Iona to Northumbria at the request of thr king who, as a prince, had spent time in exile at Iona.... Aidan was an educator and abolitionist. He bought slaves in the local markets, and set them free. Some of them joined the community he led. Another reformist movement, Quakerism, played a role in the early white settlement of Buderim. Quakers were prominent in the abolition of slavery, women's rights, and prison reform. There were many Quaker convicts snd early settlers in Australia. A Quaker community established on Mooloolah Plains (known as Quakers Pocket) was destroyed by flooding and some of the residents became first settlers on Buderim. Joseph Dixon used Kanskas as cheap labour on his sugar cane farm. When he went to Maryborough to collect a group of workers he walked, camped, and ate with them on equal terms. One of the new arrivals was pregnant. She rode on Dixon's horse while he walked. This egalitarianism was at odds with the societal norms of the time. While there were grave injustices committed against the Indigenous and Islander people there was also a tradition on Buderim of equality between races unusual for the times. Quakers opened a school for Kanakas as well as one for white settlers and later encouraged both to attend together, at a time when virtually no school in SEQueensland allowed such mixing. Im grateful for the inspiring legacy of these people. See more

06.01.2022 Yesterday at Choerburg I spoke to some people at a Vietnam Vets Day events and remembered the local Indigenous and Islander people who served in the Vietnam War.... I also remembered the conscription lottery, the illegal and finally successful protest marches, the destruction of the environment and civilians with napalm, the military victorys, the final defeat, the traumatized vets and the scandal of their public humiliation when they returned to Australia. Let's not forget and lets continue to protest against injustice. See more

02.01.2022 I SPOKE TO YOU IN WHISPERS By Neil Andrew I spoke to you in whispers As shells made the ground beneath us quake... We both trembled in that crater A toxic muddy bloody lake I spoke to you and pulled your ears To try and quell your fearful eye As bullets whizzed through the raindrops And we watched the men around us die I spoke to you in stable tones A quiet tranquil voice At least I volunteered to fight You didn't get to make the choice I spoke to you of old times Perhaps you went before the plough And pulled the hay cart from the meadow Far from where we're dying now I spoke to you of grooming Of when the ploughman made you shine Not the shrapnel wounds and bleeding flanks Mane filled with mud and wire and grime I spoke to you of courage As gas filled the Flanders air Watched you struggle in the mud Harness acting like a snare I spoke to you of peaceful fields Grazing beneath a setting sun Time to rest your torn and tired body Your working day is done I spoke to you of promises If from this maelstrom I survive By pen and prose and poetry I'll keep your sacrifice alive I spoke to you of legacy For when this hellish time is through All those who hauled or charged or carried Will be regarded heroes too I spoke to you in dulcet tones Your eye told me you understood As I squeezed my trigger to bring you peace The only way I could And I spoke to you in whispers...

02.01.2022 Luke 15 20 So he returned home to his father. And while he was still a long way off, his father saw him coming. Filled with love & compassion, he ran to his son, embraced him, and kissed him. 21 His son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against both heaven and you, and I am no longer worthy of being called your son.[a]’ 22 But his father bought the finest robe in the house and put it on him, a ring for his finger and sandals for his feet. 23 We must celebrate with a feast, 24 For this son of mine was dead and has now returned to life. He was lost, but now he is found.’ So the party began
