24.01.2022 Happy #DietitiansDay2020 . I’ve had some amazing experiences in my career and it wouldn’t be possible without working in a diverse role . I still pinch myself that I have set up my private practice here in Townsville, QLD with services extending to online.... . Being a Dietitian requires an additional qualification to understand and help treat one or multiple conditions holistically. With a heavy load of science and interpreting the latest research, Dietitians breakdown the science into bite size practical strategies to improve health and lifestyle . I love what I do and my clients and colleagues inspire me everyday . . #thegoodfoodclinic #careerexperince #ohthemems #happytobeadietitian #ineedanewphoto #nutritionprofessionals See more

16.01.2022 Sugar cravings . A result of the following poor sleep low fibre diet... under eating hormones (hello menstrual cycle) low blood glucose levels emotions regulation . These are just a few examples of why some of us can’t get a handle of sugar cravings. 15.01.2022 I put up a question on my stories asking if mushrooms are rich in protein. I’ve heard this a few times and was curious what you lot thought. . So it turns out more people thought mushrooms were a good source of protein, so I thought I’d better put my Dietitian hat on and correct that asap! . I am curious... where did this information come from? Is it because the texture is ‘meaty’ or maybe you’ve heard this so many times it becomes ‘true’. This is very common by the way... . Anyway, you’re welcome and if you want a plant base protein alternative, try beans, lentils, tofu. . . #thegoodfoodclinic #mushroomsarentsteak #proteinwars #proteinmyths #mushiesbro #steakandbake See more

14.01.2022 HOW TO (ACTUALLY) RESEARCH . Since the beginning of time/internet it has been a pet peeve of mine when reputable health information is torn down because ‘Karen’ or old mate on the keyboards says do your research. This is because in FACT it is not just about just 1 piece of research but also the quality (see slide 2 and 3). .... On the other hand it is common for us to do our own research because let’s be honest, the news is renowned for flashy headlines and jumping to conclusions. Or, you may feel like you’re backed into a corner and wanting to find answers to your health problems. Unfortunately the people I come across become more confused because of all the conflicting health messages, opinions, documentaries and blogs. . This post will shed some light on the quality and validity of the ‘research’ you’re reading/watching. . But there is a step before you even begin to research! You first need to know how research is conducted, what order it is ranked, and what that ranking means..... Sound like too much hard work? That’s because research and communicating health messages is hard! That is why we seek out expert advice. . To research one topic can take me up to an entire day and this is why I have specific areas of interest because I’m not Wonder Woman # . . #thegoodfoodclinic #researchkaren #realresearch nutritionknowledge #healthresearch #buthaveyouseenthisdoco #butiwaatoldsomethingelse #thatcantberight #youshoulddoyourresearch See more

13.01.2022 Little ears are listening. Little eyes are watching. If we are serious about interrupting the trans-generational impact of diet culture (which includes putting ...the brakes on appearance-related conversations) then let's start local. It's completely understandable that we greet people starting with their appearance - we mean well & this is how we've been socialised. AND we can't ignore that it sends strong messages to younger people about "how to greet people." Do we see younger kids doing it? Nope. And let's leave it like that as long as possible. What to do/say instead: There are a million other more interesting and kind ways to greet & speak with people that have nothing to do with appearance. One question I am often asked if when others - sometimes grandparents or families-in-law - comment on us, or our child's appearance. Comparisons are often the worst, particularly from sibling to sibling, or cousin to cousin (my clients tell me ALL THE TIME that this deeply impacted them as children so please try not to do this). If it's your in-laws, you might think about putting your partner to work in having the conversation with their family, awkward as that may be. Asking people ahead of time stops those heart-in-the-mouth moments where we might find ourselves either been too syrupy-sweet or a little too harsh. And let's just start with ourselves. Notice the urge to comment - on yourself or others. And either spread the shush, or consider what else to say.... And as for food? Please can we just enjoy it, and make our own choices rather than labelling it. Someone at the table will thank you. . . #bottleoshush #thegiftofshush #thegiftthatkeepsongiving #allbodies #foodpeace #bodypeace #mindfuldietitian

11.01.2022 As I’m getting a few suspicious looks from my lovely clients I thought I’d share the news . I’m cruising through the second trimester and some days I forget I’m pregnant until I feel a few kicks and need to pee for the hundredth time . As a Dietitian I can honestly say I did not eat according to the nutrition guidelines in the first trimester. Heck, most 3 year olds were eating more vegetables and other food groups compared to me. 09.01.2022 What do you think about this? Tried cheat days? Or tried to be ‘good’ all week to get to the weekend and eat the food you have been avoiding? . Enjoying food is a big deal! It’s often why many generic diets don’t work . Have you felt yourself daydreaming about the food you won’t allow yourself? That doesn’t necessarily have to be ice-cream Sundays. It could be anything you’re limiting in your diet beyond reason.... . To have a healthy diet means to have a diet of variety and enjoyment. This will look different to all of us but one thing that is similar is that we can’t follow a diet we don’t enjoy . . #thegoodfoodclinic #cheatdaysareover #dietitiantweet #imadietitiantrustme #nutritionchat #healthbyfood See more

08.01.2022 I think we under estimate how much time is taken up with food decisions, preparation, eating, cleaning up, grocery shopping and repeating it over again..... every single day of your life . Often we focus on what we ‘need’ to eat but get frustrated that we can’t follow through with it. I swear I spend 80-90% of the time talking about strategies and behaviors that will support the over arching nutrition priorities. . Trust me when I say you are not doing yourself justice by j...ust focusing on food. If you have tried multiple diets it is clear that food is not the barrier and it is absolutely not your fault. We just need to approach nutrition from another view point. . Nutrition education is soo important but I often wonder about the ‘how’ and ‘why’. Now that you have a good level of education ‘how’ can we break this down into practice steps and ‘why’ has this not happened in the past/present. . Self awareness is a key tool you need to add to your tool box to fuel those health related changes . If you feel comfortable you can share your experience or barriers. If not, thanks for reading . . #thegoodfoodclinic #nohealthwithoutmentalhealth #nutritionbeyondfood #foodandmood #foodpsychology #nutritionpsychology See more

05.01.2022 Good news to those under a treatment plan and using Telehealth

05.01.2022 F O O D. . Our food choices are based on sooo many factors: values, culture, knowledge, beliefs, preferences, availability, food preparation skills, society, trends..... the list goes on . You can follow what everyone else is eating or a restrictive diet that causes you to eat food you don’t like, but this won’t result in a long-term, sustainable healthy habits. .... Feeling physically full and satisfied doesn’t always pair together. Take for example a meal which has meat, veg and potatoes. It will do the job in terms of nutrition but did you enjoy it? . Enjoying food is just as important as making sure you are listening to your hunger cues. We can fill up on food that doesn’t satisfy us and still continue to crave other food. It’s like having an itch you can’t scratch . If you find that you over analyse your plate, it may help to focus on the appearance, texture, taste, smell, variety and enjoyment of food. . . #thegoodfoodclinic #dietitianplate #nondiet #behaviouralchange #foodthoughts #helpfulnutrition #foodflexibility #nutritioninfograph #morethannutrition See more

02.01.2022 Recovery from Eating Disorders Recovery from disordered eating is possible, although it can feel tough at times. While health professionals can view recovery in... terms of symptom remission and reduction, this doesn’t capture what it is like for someone who has done the hard work to recover. A recent systematic review pooled research that examined recovery from people’s lived perspectives and what this involved (Wetzler, Hackmann, Peryer, et al, 2020). This review comprised 20 studies, with 351 participants with various eating disorder diagnoses in their history. Several key themes emerged as important for recovery: 1. Supportive relationships: Receiving support and encouragement from others, and feeling connected to other people. Peer support from people who had recovered also made a difference. 2. Hope: This is believing that it is possible to recover and to have a better future. A future not controlled by your eating disorder. This belief can help you push through when the going gets tough. 3. Identity: This is discovering who you really are, and what your interests are. And realising that you are not your eating disorder or your weight! 4. Meaning and purpose: This involves identifying why your eating disorder developed. It's also learning that there is more to life than your eating disorder; that you can have a purpose outside of this. 5. Empowerment: Regaining control over your life, rather than having it controlled by the eating disorder. 6. Self-compassion: Learning how to be kind to yourself. This can involve easing the self-criticism, practising self-care, and becoming aware of your needs and emotions (and honouring these). References Wetzler, S, Hackmann, C, Peryer, G, et al. (2020). 02.01.2022 Processed foods . I’m not here to confuse you or ruin the hard work of the amazing Public Health Nutritionist and Dietitians. But I do have something to say about this topic as too often then not processed foods are referred to as unhealthy food. . Definition: Processed food includes food that has been cooked, canned, frozen, packaged or changed in nutritional composition with fortifying, preserving or preparing in different ways. (Reference from Academy of Nutrition and D...ietetics) . The processed foods we commonly think about are fast food, confectionary (sweets and lollies) and cured meats. So in this case, yes a diet based on these types of foods aren’t as nutritious. However many processed foods are healthy foods. . These foods offer convenience, long-shelf life (reduced waste) and affordable options. Since the recent floods I learnt how valuable packaged foods were (thank god for long Iife milk and weetbix ). . I would go as far as saying all foods are processed foods as they have simply gone through a process to get from paddock to plate. . So that’s one less nutrition myth you can tick off your list and help you to chill out when it comes to food choices #yourewelcome . . #processedfoods #noad #nutritionforbetterliving #nutritionmythbuster #APDdietitian #foodiewithadegree #processedfoodisallfood #nutritionmadeeasy #cereals See more
