22.01.2022 What NOT to feed you chooks As much as we love feeding our chooks our food scraps, we need to be careful as not everything that's good for us is good for them! Some of the main culprits are below. Potatoes, tomatoes and eggplant are part of the nightshade family meaning all parts of the plant contains a substance called solanine. Do not feed your chickens eggplant leaves, the actual eggplant is fine. Green tomatoes, raw potato, and their leaves are also a no-no. Cooked ...potato is ok in small quantities. Solanine is a natural pesticide and neurotoxin which can lead to respiratory distress, convulsions, neurological damage, diarrhea or paralysis and can even be fatal in large enough amounts. Uncooked beans are TOXIC due to the Phytohaemagglutinin in them - cooked beans are fine. Never feed your chickens uncooked rice, pasta or lentils. These will swell in their stomachs and cause serious digestive problems . Do not feed your chooks anything that has become mouldy or rotten. Also, be careful their feed has not become mouldy over time. Feeding mouldy food can produce mycotoxins which are harmful to chickens. Some toxins can be lethal, whilst others depress immunity and reduce appetite, exposing the flock to the effects of other diseases. Chocolate contains Theobromine, which is toxic to birds and many other pets. This is also found in tea, coffee and some colas. Chocolate could cause heart problems in birds which can range from an irregular heartbeat to full cardiac arrest. 21.01.2022 Have you heard of Coccidiosis? Unfortunately, it is the most common chicken disease, and fatal if untreated. It is primarily seen in chicks, and young chickens, but can also affect the older in the flock if they are sick or suffering malnutrition. Generally, an active and healthy adult bird will be able to tolerate cocci as they usually develop resistance over time.... Cocci, is a microscopic parasite (protozoa) which is spread through feacal contamination. Signs include: a hunched appearance mucousy or bloody diarrhea dehydration anemia listlessness ruffled feathers stunted growth, and death. Because chicks are the most commonly affected, I recommend giving them a medicated chick feed. This will provide a low level of resistance to cocci, but not full protection. I personally like to add 'Cocciprol' to their water preventative to for new chicks until they around 10 weeks old. This can also be used as a treatment. Ways to reduce cocci in young chicks: avoid overcrowding keep humidity in the cage/area as low as possible - using our chick nipple waterer helps with this. Keep bowls and trays clean and regularly changed Prevent contact with wild birds (if possible) Keep a close eye on your chicks after periods of rain If you suspect you have a coccidiosis in one chick/chicken, you need to treat the whole flock. If one becomes infected then it's highly likely to spread through your entire flock. If that happens, your first port of call is to treat with an amprolium product (links below). Secondly, clean as much as you can, and follow the reduction tips above. If you are worried, I recommend taking the sick chicken to a vet. 19.01.2022 Chook Foraging Mix Reduce your feed costs, and supply extra nutrition by providing a foraging area for your chooks. These seeds have been specifically chosen to grow quickly, and have good regrowth capacity. Then hand-blended by us perfectly to provide your chickens with a fun smorgasbord of green nutrition.... You can feed to your chooks anytime from once they begin to shoot, but if you want to regrow, I would give them a week minimum to really establish themselves. Suitable to grow in trays, or to broadcast. If broadcasting on a foraging area, keep your chooks off the area for a week to allow the seeds to germinate and establish. Once they have nibbled it down, keep chooks off the area, to allow it to reshoot. from only $4.95 Kits also available https://www.thegoodlifebackyard.com.au//chook-foraging-mix/

18.01.2022 Scaly Leg Mites Scaly Leg mites are brought to your flock from wild birds, and rodents, then onto your chickens scales on their feet. Here, the mites feed and also leave droppings. These are generally too small to be seen with the naked eye, but will make your chickens legs appear scabby and crusty. If this is left untreated, it will spread to the rest of the flock and cause them great discomfort. ... Healthy chickens have scales that are smooth and flat. Chickens with scaly leg mites will have crusty, uneven and raised scales. The skin will be thickened. Give your chickens a nice soak in a tub of lukewarm water, and gently clean them. After they’ve dried off, dust their entire body with some Pestene powder or diatomaceous earth. If you have a particularly bad infestation, I like to use this treatment https://www.thegoodlifebackyard.com.au//aristopet-scaly-fa or https://www.thegoodlifebackyard.com.au//avitorl-mite-and-l and then smother the legs in a kitchen oil. You essentially need to smother and suffocate the live mites, and then use a medicated treatment to kill the eggs. As a preventative I am also known to spray each chooks legs and feet - particularly new chooks - with a canola spray oil from the kitchen! Diatomaeous Earth, Nest Blend or Pestene Powder through the nest boxes also works wonders. Coop care is essential. If left untreated, mites can cause death, so please don't ignore them!
