25.01.2022 Vegetables Seeds to plant this October As the days get longer and the weather warms up your soil temp is likely rising too.... As your soil temp rises new types of seed can be sown. Remember choose heirlooms seeds in your garden so you can collect seeds after cropping to get ready for next seasons crop. if seeds are small sow directly into gardens and so lots of them to account for hungry ants and other critters If seeds are big, presoak them overnight To Grow food in our Unpredictable Highland Climate there is no substitute paying attention. monitor your soil temp. and plenty when the temp is just right. You will increase your success rates and you will become a little more tuned in to your environment with every passing day. After a while you will have acquired local knowledge about your microclimate, to pass on to your friend, family and neighbours. Happy Cropping
23.01.2022 How do you Nirtify Your soil at Home? You may have seen this tree around the yarralumla nursery parklands. Its been used for ever as an ornamental tree, and for good reason.... The thing most people dont know is that itnitrifys the soil as it grows. Its a small tree often described as a larger shrub. This small tree fits in the urban environment better than some typical nitrying species like Gleditsia triacanthos (Honey Locust) which grow too big for most urban yards. 23.01.2022 Seeds planting guide for the Last month of spring. If you've been monitoring the soil temp in your unique microclimate youll likely will be well into spring and summer vegetables.... The following seeds and seedlings prefer the soil temp around their little root systems to be as follows. Using a simple thermometer you can give your seeds the best start when its there time. In the Canberra Region, growing food is all about the timing. Our growing season is short and fraught with late and early frosts, so knowing your soil temp is crucial. If the soil temp is above 10 degrees it is unlikely to get a frost settle on it over night. Which means when the temp is right tomatoes can go in the ground. And by monitoring our soil temp for the past 5 years, our tomatoes have gone in the ground months before Melbourne Cup day, and we generally eat tomatoes in December. If you have been finding it hard to propagate seedlings, your soil temp is probably the missing piece of the puzzle. The soil temp is how we know spring has sprung in our neighbourhood and once it starts to rise it won't fall again until winter. Happy Cropping

17.01.2022 Where you store your rain water can have a dramatic effect on the Land. On my property East of Canberra, there is very little topsoil. In some lush sections it is a whopping 10mm deep! There is very little microbial activity in the soil, its a fragile australian ecosystem that is slowly loosing its hold in the changing climate.... The sub soil is silty clay on Granite outcroppings. It is easily eroded if left unprotected. Two years ago I installed a swale to save the Catalpa tree that has struggled for more than 15 years to get to that size. The swale is placed across a very small erosion gully. The swale fills after rain events and holds water for a week or two. The water soaks in to the mound and makes it way downhill, in the soil, hydrating the land as it goes. With the water slowly moving downhill in the soil, rather than over the surface, the risk of erosion is removed. Not to mention the plants living downhill have all the water they want, when they want it. and Check out the grass growing, essentially in the subsoil. The swale has hydrated the land, saved the catalpa tree and given space for a lawn of native grass. A lawn is not a common occurance on a bush block in our area even if you turf it. I have been dissapointed not to have planted the swale out yet, but now the grass is set im wishing id have raked it clean and made it levelish, so i could run a mower over it, for novelty. The local wiildlife are really enjoying the plentiful grass and the chickens get to free range it too. Swales are a passive watering system that grows grass very well and if planted out with trees for food or timber production they can create a very low input system, with high output. Does your land need some passive hydration? Ask Us How
17.01.2022 Happy Spring! Now is the time to plant spring and summer vegetable seeds, but how do you know what to plant and when exactly?... Getting the timing right is the number one thing you can do to get a bumper crop in our unpredictable highland climate. But how do you tune into the right timing? The ancient art of ‘paying attention’ will provide what you seek better than a calendar date. Paying attention and monitoring your soil temperature with a simple soil thermometer will let you know when spring has sprung in your local microclimate. To grow a seed into a plant you need the correct combination of sunlight, water and nutrient. To strike a seed requires water and warmth. Each type of seed will strike once the soil temp reaches its preferred Temperature and not before. Our Canberra Region Seed Planting Guide removes the guess work. If you’ve ever had a problem striking tomato seedlings this might be why We’ve compiled a list of vegetable seeds to plant, based on their preferred soil temperature. So when the soil is warm enough in your plot, you can start to get things growing! We start some of our seeds in a recycled styrofoam box, but most things will start right in the soil of your favourite garden bed if the soil temp is right. What are you going to grow this season?
14.01.2022 This morning the soil temp in the workshop, front garden, is almost 13 degrees! what temperature is your soil right now? Heres a list of seeds you'll need in your spring Kit. Ready for the soil temp to be warm enough and ready to harvest before the first frosts of autumn. Artichokes, Asparagus, Beans, Beetroot, Broad Beans, Broccoli, Button Squash, Brussel Sprouts, Cabbage, Capsicum, Cauliflower, Carrot, Celeriac, Celery, Chilli, Corn, Cucumber, Eggplant, Kohl Rabi, Leek, Le...ttuce, Mustard, Onion, Parsnip, Peas, Pumpkin, Radish, Rockmelon, Shallots, Silverbeet, Sunflower, Swede, Tomato, Turnip, Watermelon and Zucchini If your chosen seeds are small enough to get carried away by ants, sow plenty of them or start them in a recycled foam box. If the seeds are big, presoak them overnight before popping them straight in the ground What will you be eating from your Garden this growing season?
13.01.2022 This Kangaroo Paw is just loving its new home! It was planted in March, on the main path to the back door, a surprise greeting after a busy day out and about. Thanks again to Cool Country Natives for their awesome plant stock.... Weve planted this specimen on top of the mound so it doesnt get wet feet. If you haven't had any luck growing Kangaroo Paws at your place its likely the location that's giving you trouble. This Kangaroo Paw gets plenty of water here ontop of the swale and its doing a good job converting that water into a full flourish of contrasting yellow flowers this year. #nativeflowers
13.01.2022 Exciting Times! Today is the day the Minister officially opens the new Display Village at Strathnairn. ... It'll be open to the public from Saturday morning amidst much fanfare, frivolities and family activities. So get your party boots on, and come check it out. heres a sneak peek at our Stream next to the front door of 31 Yeomans St Strathnairn. Ask Us How
12.01.2022 Our Cheeky Chickens are growing up fast. New Rice Husk bedding keeps inside times exciting. The real reason we use it is because it keeps the mites at bay, as it is a less then ideal habitat for them, and balances with the poop so things never get damp. ... It does not compact so you get superior coverage over other materials and look at the fun they are having! When its done, it goes staright on top of our garden beds, as snails dislike the surface and wont often cross it, keeping our vegetable seedlings safe as babies. We use Rice Husk bedding for the mature lady's layer boxes too, because it seems to stay inplace and it hold the eggs well. If you need some Rice Husk, we gots a plenty 5 kg bag $20 Ask Us How
11.01.2022 Tomato Update Today is the traditional day that Canberrans plant out tomato seedlings. But what if you planted your tomatoes when the seasonal indicators suggested it rather than a stoic calendar date?... spring was early and so is summer. This is what tomatoes look like, planted out when all the nay sayers were calling me crazy. My seedlings survived the snow and frost with little assistance or protection. All the plants are setting fruit, something they will not do when the heat gets too high. and they are approaching 1m tall. There are plenty of flowers making plenty of fruit to ripen by Christmas. How do your tomatoes grow?
11.01.2022 Our Cheeky Australorp Chicks have hatched.
05.01.2022 Tomato Update As my tomatoes have gotten too big for a box to fit over without damaging them, this weekend I put tomato cages around them to support them as they grow. The fruit is setting and the harvest will be heavy and early. ... Even if we get a frost now it'll be very light, lasting maybe an hour, just before sunrise so little damage will be done. I doubt there will be a frost because there hasn't been one this late for several years a local farmer recently told me. How do your tomatoes grow? with 60 -90 days for most plants to serve up ripe fruit, when will your little treasures provide for you? Im on target for early December, but only time will tell. 04.01.2022 Summer is here!! Last night I came across the first Christmas Beetle of the season.... Its shaping up to be a long hot summer. Good Luck
03.01.2022 We have spent weeks working at the new Display Village at Strathnairn. During that time we saw no birds, insects or wildlife. No surprises considering the area was scraped clean in order to create the new suburbs. No habitat means no wildlife.... Fortunately The Gordon Gnohm designed our landscaping with this in mind. The new Display Village will be the heart of the local microclimate and will eventually be built in, on all sides, making it the centre of the system. After running our Waterfeature for a few days, the bees turned up to drink, and yesterday these two rosellas turned up to check it out too. Water is the source of all life. These are awesome indicators, tell us that the ecosystem will become established overtime here, and future plantings and remnant trees and forests left by the developers, will make the Ginninderry development something very special. Another Ecosystem Grounded with a water source. Ask Us How
02.01.2022 Every Vegetable Gardener needs one of these. Monitoring your soil temperature is vital if you want to produce abundant crops in or Unpredictable Highland Climate. A simple Soil Thermometer will help you tune into when Spring has sprung in your microclimate.... The Soil Temp in the Front Workshop Garden was 12c at 7am when the ambient air temp was only 6 degrees. In the background you may be able to see a chomped tomato leaf. This tomato seedling has been in the ground since fathers day and has been given no special treatment except that it is planted under a cover of snow peas. Its in flower and the 2 frosts we have experienced have not harmed it. Although it is evident that it would prefer it to be warmer. My theory for the past 10 years is to put my tomatoes in early and see what happens. Because, if the last frost doesnt happen before Melbourne Cup Day comes, my plants are usually getting close to a meter tall. Plants that big can survive most things a Canberra Region Spring can throw at it. Even the 2 hail storms last season couldn't stop me eating tomatoes in December. It takes 60-90 days to get a crop of tomatoes. Dont leave it too late or the early frost might get your bumper crop. Happy Growing
