23.01.2022 So with all the craziness at the stores, I am taking this weekend to add more fresh produce into my garden. Personally, Im not a big fan of paying $12/kg for broccoli . With the uncertainty of the world at the moment, and not knowing how long it may carry on for, now is a great time to finally get that vegie patch going. If you need a hand, feel free to give us a yell on 0427 395 778
23.01.2022 Nature is amazing. So much going on below the surface
23.01.2022 Day 29 of Spring Citrus Gall Wasps - Check your citrus trees for gall wasp and remove affected sections by pruning well below the gall. Dont compost this or put it in the green waste bin. Its a good idea to cut through the gall to expose the larvae to air which they hate before putting it in a bag and popping in the rubbish. Other things you can do are to hang sticky yellow traps on the tree in mid-August as they attract and trap the emerging adults, but make sure ...you take the traps down by November as they also kill beneficial insects. Do not use a fertiliser that is high in nitrogen, as this promotes soft growth which provides ideal conditions for the wasp. Use a balanced fertiliser or compost. A biological form of control introducing wasps that prey on citrus gall wasp is used in orchards and home gardens. Megastigmus brevivalvus and Megastigmus trisulcus are natural enemies of citrus gall wasp. They lay their eggs inside the eggs of the citrus gall wasp and when their eggs hatch they destroy the host. Megastigus brevivalvus is sold to home gardeners in some states, but it is only available for a two-week window around October/November. If you are able to get some of the parasitic wasps, they must be released soon after the citrus gall wasps have emerged. This is your absolute last chance to do something about gall wasp before they hatch out and take over the world, so dont put action off!
23.01.2022 The rain has been unbelievable over the past couple of weeks. But man, is it great to see the sunshine again hey
22.01.2022 Day 20 of Spring A massive congrats to all the winners in the Carnival of Flowers. And a huuuuge high 5 to all the runners up who didnt go home with a ribbon. So much time, money, sweat and love goes into establishing, maintaining and presenting all the gardens to the judges and the public. Be sure to get out and see as many garden entrants as you can over the coming week and let them know that all their efforts are appreciated. Many have been doing it tough with no water access. Thanks to all involved
22.01.2022 Got to be cruel to be kind! Before & after- This wayward mandarin tree has not been pruned for years, resulting in small, out of reach fruit. In order to have a more manageable tree, with larger fruit, we have given this tree a severe cut back. It may seem drastic, but never fear! A hard prune is just what the doctor ordered. This citrus will spring back with lush growth and end up providing its owner with beautiful, large fruit for years to come.... Are your citrus trees are in need of a heavy prune like this? Here at the green gardener, our staff are trained to prune your trees to create a healthy structure, prevent disease, and of course produce delicious fruit! Give The Green Gardener a call to give your citrus trees the love they need this winter! #thegreengardener #horticulture #toowoombaregion #citrus #gardening

17.01.2022 Day 22 of Spring New growth kicked in this week on my Ginkgo biloba. Love watching this tree all year round through the different seasons. Native to China, the Ginkgo is the only living species in the division Ginkgophyta, all others being extinct. It is found in fossils dating back 270 million years. The leaves set it apart from any other tree for me. The transition from the vibrant green through Spring and Summer, to the amazing bright yellow that you only get to enjoy for a short time before they fall

06.01.2022 We witnessed an extreme plague of army worm recently that devastated a recent turf installation. They managed to destroy about 300 square metres of couch in under a week. Luckily with treatment, we were able to bring it back within a fortnight. One extreme to the other. Its amazing what we see.
