25.01.2022 SA: Please Share! 2 jobs with The Growing Space - Support Coordinator N/NE Suburbs of Adelaide and Home Researcher 1. Support Coordinator: Our northern Adelaide team really want an extra person on board. We need someone ready to hit the ground running, so not a rookie this time, sorry. You've got to have experience as a Support Coordinator, LAC or Planner (if you are one of the last two we can rebuild you, it's ok). Maybe a service coordinator from a provider, but you need to... have some excellent NDIS knowledge. You should be a disabled person or a family carer. You need to be fabulously self motivated, organised, passionate about disabled people living good lives, and thorough, and happy to work from home (we don't have an office). You need to have or get all the relevant clearances and stuff, and a reliable insured vehicle or transport. You need to read our website and have a decent scroll though our Facebook page and understand our perspectives on things. We are not a "typical" provider. You need to be able to commit to offering 25+ billable hours of work each week. We are open to contractor or employee model, whatever works for you - the important thing is that we're a good fit for each other. Start ASAP. $$ are at or above industry standards, and negotiable to a point. 2. Home Researcher: We're looking for someone for about 10-15 hours per week, to do "drop of a hat" research work online and by phone, from home. The role will be a bit like a PA for our coordinators who might call or email you and say "Please find me a few OTs available within 2 weeks in the western suburbs who specialise in equipment prescription for children", for example. You'll need to be quick online, a googlemeister and confident on the phone. You'll need to be able to confidently use Microsoft software and send emails that make sense. You need to be a pretty practical soul. We would especially like applications from disabled people..$30/hour casual. You will also need to have or get clearances etc. and be a good human. About Us - We're a team of about 25 disabled people and carers who work toward people with disability and families living better lives. Check our website for more, including our profiles. How to apply - please send an email with your CV and a cover letter to [email protected] Please don't ask questions here (but feel free to share or tag!), and read this post carefully before you apply to make sure you address our requirements.

25.01.2022 What are Positive Behaviour Supports - PBS? I think these terms get thrown around a fair bit without a really strong understanding of what they actually mean. I'm guilty of this myself, but since working with a bunch of people with significant behavioural support needs, I'm learning more everyday. So, in layman's terms, what is PBS? It's a multi step process that starts with an evidence based (we have lots to prove it works) way of collecting and analysing information for ea...ch individual, about the triggers for their behaviours, and what the person is communicating through the behaviour. Once that info is collected and understood, PBS works to help that person to find less damaging ways to express themselves, and alternative ways to communicate needs and frustrations. It also works hard to improve the life of the person, because often behaviours that are harmful to the person or those around them are a way to say "I'm bored" or "I don't like this activity" without using words (All behaviour is communication!!). A PBS plan will give concrete ideas and ways to prevent, reduce and respond to specific and general challenging behaviours across all areas of life, and if it's used consistently - at home, school, respite etc etc., it can make a HUGE difference in the person's quality of life. PBS doesn't happen overnight. It can be a long hard (not cheap) slog for everyone - especially for the person with challenging behaviour, but the results will be much longer lasting and far more worthwhile than some of the older punishment based ways of managing behaviour. NDIS funds can be used to develop a PBS Plan and implementation. Here's an awesome little six minute video that explains it better than I just did! Enjoy! This post is Copyright The Growing Space 2020 Happy for this to be shared and reproduced, but only in full, with credit, and no edits. Thanks. The video is thanks to BILD UK with further credits at the end of the video.

24.01.2022 The Self Manager Hub is looking for a Project Leader!!! (PLEASE SHARE!) Self Manager Hub is run by self managers for self managers! 24.01.2022 Six Things for Self Managers that WILL NOT end in tears, and four that certainly will. There’s a lot of fear mongering about the trouble you can get into when you self manage. It’s unfounded. If you have to pay a term fee upfront for a service or training event, for example, and claim it based on the date of the invoice, you will not go to hell or be made to pay it back, assuming you actually attend and it is something you should be spending NDIS funds on....Continue reading

24.01.2022 NEWS The NDIS have released some stuff about important things, to get your feedback. These are about some big changes to plan spending flexibility, and about how independent assessments are used to get into the scheme.... There are 4 papers, 2 about Early Childhood changes |(some good stuff in there) but \i want to talk about the other two: Planning policy for personalised budgets and plan flexibility and Access and eligibility policy with independent assessments https://www.ndis.gov.au/about-us/improving-ndis It's really important that our community read these and give feedback. Here are some of my initial thoughts (plenty more to come, I'm sure)... Things I like: 1. Everyone will get a personalised budget, and the money will be flexible between support categories (except for some stuff, like SDA and capital equipment and mods etc.) 2. Independent assessments will mean some people will get access to NDIS quicker, and won't have to pay for reports beforehand. Things I don't like: 1. They are proposing that you only get a month of your budget at a time, and that every year it starts over (although some of the unused budget might rollover into the new year) 2. Goals don't affect your personalised budget (I don't see how this is possible - if your goal is to move out of home, you'll need a higher budget, surely?) 3. There's no way to appeal the results of your independent assessment (but you can appeal the plan budget amount) Things I'm unsure about: 1. I don't understand how standardised budgets based on independent assessment will take into account an individual's unique goals - if I am happy in a 1:6 group program my funding will likely be fine, but if I want to pursue a microenterprise and need a facilitator and some 1:1 support, will I get enough funding through this proposed process? 2. What if I want to live alone and not with 1:3 support? My "functional impairment" hasn't changed, but I need more funding in that situation... 3. How are they going to work "exemptions" to independent assessments - a can of worms! What do you think?

23.01.2022 Common medications for people with mental health and/or behavioural support needs: What do they do, and What are the possible side effects? And when are they a Chemical restraint/Restrictive Practise? 22.01.2022 VIC and NSW re: PPE for particpants Media Release Minister for the National Disability Insurance Scheme(NDIS), Stuart Robert, has announced temporary changes to funding arrangements to allow NDIS participants in Victoria and New South Wales to claim the cost of personal protective equipment (PPE), including masks. From 29 July 2020, NDIS participants who rely on face-to-face supports and assistance with their daily living will be able to use an existing support item (Low Cos...t Disability-Related Health Consumables) to claim the cost of PPE for the times their worker is with them. Participants in Victoria and New South Wales can now recover the costs to purchase PPE items using their NDIS funds, if they; receive an average of at least one hour a day of face-to-face daily living supports, and live in Victoria or New South Wales. The Minister also announced participants and providers can access additional cleaning supports if required to self-isolate or quarantine, and provider specific measures to ensure support workers have appropriate PPE when delivering NDIS services in Victoria or New South Wales. https://www.ndis.gov.au//5048-delivering-ndis-during-covid

21.01.2022 Dear SDA Providers, Builders and Investors, STOP BUILDING 5 bedroom houses with one living area for people with High Physical Support Houses. WE DON'T WANT THEM, and we won't refer people to these houses which offer no quality of life to residents, and which you have built based on a financial model of high SDA return, without any consideration of what the "market" actually wants or needs.... What we DO need, however, is a stack of one or two bedroom homes, and some three bedroom homes, and we DESPERATELY need them for people at the improved liveability and robust level as well. This is where the HUGE demand lies, and while it might appear the returns are lower, you'll be doing the right thing, still make a good profit, and the house won't sit there vacant for years, losing you money. Even better - why don't you work towards helping disabled people OWN THEIR OWN homes, and look at shared equity models etc. Would YOU want to live in this home with four other strangers? No? Then damn well don't expect disabled people to either! These are the views of Sam Paior, of The Growing Space, and reflect years of experience with hundreds of NDIS participants and families and their search for somewhere to be their home, not just a place to sleep. Feel free to share, with credit and no edits. Thanks. pic desc: a 3D style floorplan of a five bedroom, five bathroom house with a corridor down the middle and a support worker bedroom and bathroom at the front. There is one shared kitchen/living/dining area (which would not fit five people using wheelchairs around the table). There is a one car, tiny, garage. There are little images of empty manual hospital style wheelchairs scattered throughout the doorways.

18.01.2022 Restrictive Practises Post #5 Trauma, Abuse and Neglect often lead to behaviours which often lead to Restrictive Practises. No-one likes to think about this stuff, but it is more common than you would think as a reason for a change in behaviour, or for harmful behaviours in general. I’m not going to go into great detail in this post, but, as easy as it is to stick your head in the sand as a parent or provider, we MUST always consider if abuse and/or neglect is causing or cont...Continue reading

14.01.2022 PLEASE SHARE and/or TAG: For all businesses on Facebook, please consider adapting your social media policies, and when you post a photograph or flyer on Facebook, can you PLEASE put ALL the words from the flyer and/or a description of the photograph in the post in words. This will mean that people who have vision impairments don't miss out, and it also means that people who do not read English well (new arrivals, those with poor literacy and those with intellectual disabilit...y or brain injury etc) can use simple technology to read out the post electronically, and/or translate it into their native languages. This is not difficult to do, but it will mean that you are all closer to honouring the Disability Discrimination Act, and... it's the right thing to do. 09.01.2022 What would you choose? Our Growing Space eLearning Team are getting ready to produce a range of eLearning videos and resources - produced by disabled people for their peers and carers. We'd love your help to choose our next topics! Can you please comment which TWO topics you would be most interested in and help them choose? (and feel free to add any extra great ideas for the Team to consider, too!)... 1. Moving out of your family home (for adults) 2. My adult child wants to move out (for family carers) 3. NDIS basics what do all those words and acronyms mean, and who is supposed to do what in the NDIS? (for everyone) 4. What happens when I finish school? What are my options? (for young people) 5. Finding Love and Intimacy (for adults with disability) 6. How to give your child/ren with disability a voice, and choice and control (for family carers) 7. Getting involved and belonging in your community (for disabled people) These eLearning modules will be produced with support through an NDIS ILC Grant, and will be available to purchase when completed, (and NDIS participants and nominees will generally be able to use their NDIS funds for that). We're very excited to be setting up a branch of TGS that delivers real peer support, and we're determined to make it commercially possible to exist and continue that work well after the grant runs out! We'll be introducing our Learning team: Natalie, Jocelyn, Chantelle, Jo, Taryn, Zac, Ben, Brendan and Jon, over the coming months - stay tuned! Thanks for your support and help - the team really want to make the stuff you want and need!

09.01.2022 Spot the difference? LAC or NDIS Planner? LACs (Local Area Coordinators)... help most NDIS participants by holding the planning meeting, and collecting all your information. Some LACs hand that info on to the NDIS who build and approve the plan, but many LACs are able to build a plan based on your info, and then send that "draft" to the NDIS for their budget approval by an "NDIS delegate". LACs are usually local to your area, and should also help you understand and use you...r plan and the MyPlace portal, if you do not have Support Coordination fund allocated to help with that. LACs have NO power to approve or change NDIS funding, though they can help you with a review request. NDIS Planners... help a smaller number of NDIS participants, usually those with the most complex needs and/or situations in their planning meetings. NDIS Planners are employed directly by the NDIS, and many (but not all) are appointed as NDIS "delegates", which means they get to approve plan funding amounts. There are different levels of "delegates" so when a requested plan budget is a fair amount higher than what would normally be expected for a person with those particular needs or situations, the plan may need to go to a "higher level delegate" to be approved. Participants who have their planning meeting with an NDIS Planner are more likely to have Support Coordination included in their plans, because of their more complex needs and/or situation. Participants dont really get to choose whether their plan is done by an LAC or planner, though you can of course ask to have a planner if you think your needs and/or situation is among the most complex. This post is copyright of The Growing Space 2020 image desc: a cartoon drawing of two very similar trains with a carriage each. There are a few differences between the two images, like one has a red wheel while the other has a yellow wheel. It is a "spot the difference" type image.

06.01.2022 And so it begins for our people in Victoria. Im very nervous about what might be coming. Very nervous about those in institutions and group homes and all the crowded SRFs (boarding houses). I hope their COVID plans are solid. 05.01.2022 SA: "Integrity Care" - Did you ever work for them? PLEASE SHARE: PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE, call Crimestoppers and let them know how their processes worked, so these horrors can be prevented from happening again. You can remain anonymous. You don't have to say your name or get involved. SA Police Superintendent Bray said yesterday: "In fact, some employees have steadfastly refused to cooperate and have done nothing whatsoever to assist the investigation and to ensure that this so...rt of neglect could never happen to anybody again," Superintendent Bray said. And from Crimestoppers SA: "Past and present employees of Integrity Care are encouraged to speak with police investigating the death of Annie Smith. The call comes after Major Crime detectives today searched the offices of Integrity Care and a house at Huntfield Heights for electronic and documentary evidence surrounding the death. While Integrity Care is under investigation, many people working at the business are not responsible for - and may not have known about - the neglect Annie suffered. Police believe some employees were concerned about operating practices and they have been urged to do the right thing and speak to investigators by phoning Crime Stoppers SA on 1800 333 000. The investigation has already received excellent cooperation from the public, with 78 calls to Crime Stoppers with information around Annies life. Anyone with information can call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. You dont have to say your name or get involved." pic desc: Integrity care website screenshot with a red banning circle overload, underneath stating "Thoughts and actions based on values rather than personal gain".
