24.01.2022 It is compulsory to test the tuning of your handlebars when refurbishing an old bike.

23.01.2022 New old stock cruiser. Found this bike in a box that’s been gathering dust for years and thought this front rack was a perfect match. Still working on the mudguards.

21.01.2022 Today was bath time for my Surly LHT. Quick wash and degrease of the drivetrains. Clean chainrings and polish cranks. Sort front brake to stop squealing. All done, all good.....

19.01.2022 I must have the right handle bars somewhere in this box

19.01.2022 CF: Hi GBM help bench. Some time ago my carbon frame seemed to be getting a bit squirmy when I was out of the saddle on a hill. But now it’s all the time. On the left chain stay behind the bottom bracket there’s what I thought was a crack in the paint that goes all the way around. Do you think it could be the frame’s cracked? GBM help bench: Yep sounds like it. Stand by the bike, hold the handlebars and lean on the pedal. If that crack gets any bigger, it’s not just the paint. Time for a new frame. (Maybe not a carbon fibre one this time )

18.01.2022 What do you do with an orphaned bike? Give it to the GBM who won’t be able to resist taking it apart and cleaning it up.

17.01.2022 Every grease and oil change starts with a good clean. You’re entitled to the GBM’s opinion to boot - on any matter you choose

17.01.2022 Same day service. Broken cable: in by 10 am, back on the road early afternoon

16.01.2022 Cruisin’ on the new bike. This thing is a heap of fun to ride (although not to Heathcote!)

16.01.2022 Never throw away old mudguards. You never know when an old bike will need one. (Actually you could apply that to anything in life - much to her despair)

15.01.2022 Other interests also occupy the GBM's time. Archimedes Principle suffered a split in the port gunwale adjacent to the front seat. The special glue arrived from Qld on monday and repairs are underway...

14.01.2022 #GBM retrieval services. She: If I ride to Dunnolly via as much dirt as I can find, will you come & pick me up? A bike mechanic’s work is never done.

09.01.2022 Look at all these shiny bits. Half the work in refurbishing is lots of polishing.

08.01.2022 Did I take a wrong turn somewhere? I thought I was in the Wellsford forest heading for Axedale

08.01.2022 Spotted outside the optometrist in Bath Lane. It’s an Indian replica of a 1930s Raleigh delivery bike. Neil bought it in pieces from someone who’d unearthed it in their Melbourne garage. He rebuilt it. Soon it will sport a new basket and signs under the top tube. I reckon all it needs now is a geared hub and maybe an e-bike conversion

07.01.2022 She: I think I need a new saddle. So here I am fitting the second one to try today. (Imagine- She didn’t like the Brooks saddle I lent her. Looked great on the bike. )

04.01.2022 Okay we need to have a serious talk about what kind of gunk you put on your chain. A purpose-built chain lube will not turn into bitumen.

02.01.2022 Chris said the gears on her old MTB were jumping around. Here’s why: seriously worn sprockets. The new one on the right is what they’re supposed to look like.
