25.01.2022 SHIRAZ NEWS // It has been a good few weeks for our 2017 Orchid Label Shiraz. After being awarded a solid silver medal at the recent Gippsland Wine Awards, we have just been notified that this interesting wine has received a silver medal at the prestigious Saint Martin Great Australian Shiraz Challenge where over 400 hundred commercially available wines from all over Australia are compared. It is gratifying to receive recognition at a national level for Shiraz from a regio...n not widely identified with this variety. Increasingly, Shiraz produced in Bass Coast vineyards display interesting cool climate characters featuring intense plum and berry characters and firm but subtle tannin's. The complexity of the wine is appreciably enhanced by including a high percentage of whole bunches in the ferments. Congrats! . 2018 Premiers Trophy Winner at the Victorian Wine Show! .... A cool climate wine from South Gippsland has taken out the prestigious Premiers Trophy at the 2018 Victorian Wine Show. An experienced panel of judges including some of Australias top winemakers and sommeliers, along with expert international judges from New Zealand and South Africa, declared The Gurdies Winery 2017 Orchid Label Chardonnay the best of the best. After taking out Best Wine at the Gippsland Wine Awards, Dick Wettenhall from The Gurdies Winery was delighted to take home the Victorian Wine Show, Premiers Trophy. Its a wonderful award, of course from my point of view its wonderful, but from the point of view of promoting the Victorian Governments interest in the Victorian wine industry, it epitomises their interest in growing our wine industry, so I think its a fantastic initiative to have this trophy. The unique Premiers Trophy showcases the best wines from regional wine shows across Victoria, with The Gurdies Winery, one of 12 wineries vying for the honour. Victorian really has a whole range of small to medium wineries that really create the diversity of wine styles that Victoria is built on and to have a show like this embracing all the small to medium producers in the way they do is really special, said trophy winner Dick Wettenhall. The Premiers Trophy is now a regular feature of the Victorian Wine Show after being launched last year with support from the Department of Regional Development and the Wine Growth Fund. A perpetual trophy is awarded to the wine judged the best in the state, along with an artwork Commissioned by the Victorian Wine Show committee. The Victorian Wine Show is the largest gathering of Victorian wines at any one event and is focused on promoting the quality, diversity and regionality of Victorias wineries. This years event attracted an impressive 770 wines from across the State with judging held across three days at Mitchelton Winery in Nagambie. 13.01.2022 NEW AWARD // We are thrilled that The Gurdies 2018 Orchid Label Riesling has just been awarded a bronze medal at the prestigious Canberra International Riesling Challenge 2018. This follows on from recent successes at the Gippsland Wine Awards where our Riesling has won gold (2017) and bronze (2018) medals. . Riesling is our favourite wine to make, particularly as we have both a good site and climate for cultivating this noblest of all grapes. The Riesling characters vary wi...th the vintages. The prolonged ripening associated with cool summers and early autumns achieves the most intense fruit aromas and flavours. . This years wine features a lime-driven palate, whereas apple and a hint of stone fruit flavours are more apparent in the 2017 wine. 13.01.2022 WHERE WE ARE // The Gurdies Winery is located between The Gurdies and Hurdy Gurdy Creek Nature Conservation Reserves (NCRs). These reserves were designated as NCRs by the Victorian Government because of their environmentally important flora and fauna, including many rare, threatened and endangered species. (The flora includes a spectacular array of orchids which are the subject of our new wine labels.) . The Gurdies Reserve is the largest remaining area of native dry forest... and scrub-covered vegetation on the eastern shores of Western Port Bay. The relatively lush Hurdy Gurdy Creek Reserve, with its permanent running water, is an important source of summer water for fauna resident in the neighboring Gurdies Reserve. . Importantly, the two Reserves are linked via a wild life corridor which includes the Gurdies Vineyard. Apart from providing access to water, such corridors are important for maintaining breeding between animals from different regions and, in so doing contributing to the maintenance of biodiversity. During hot dry summer periods Kangaroos, Wallabies, Wombats, Echidnas, various possums and tree Goannas and other reptiles can be seen moving through the corridor between dusk and sunrise, in search of water. 04.01.2022 2018 GIPPSLAND WINE AWARDS // The Gurdies Winery had a great 2018 Gippsland Wine Show, held last week at Lardner Park. . Six of our wines were awarded medals, including our 2017 Orchid Label Chardonnay, which won Gold, the Stewards' Award, Best White Wine and Wine of the Show awards. We were also pleased with a silver medal for our 2017 Shiraz and Best in Class for Cabernet Sauvignon. . .... Other major Bass Shire award winners included Dirty Three Winery (two golds for Pinot Noir and Most Successful Exhibitor) and Purple Hen Winery (one gold, Best in Class for Sauvignon Blanc, Sparkling Wines and Shiraz). . .
