25.01.2022 https://facebook.com/events/s/brunch-lunch-with-amanda/185917469344910/?ti=icl We’re holding lots of talks this year in various places. The first one is about FATS, an understandably confusing subject! Come along and learn what an essential fat is, where they come from and the difference between and omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. Love to see you there!
24.01.2022 Dementia affects all of us, personally or indirectly in our life. But navigating the help that’s out there can be completely overwhelming. Kim McNally is a Dementia Navigator who knows the system intimately from her lived experience of caring for three parents with a diagnosis of dementia. We’re so lucky that she comes into the pharmacy every fortnight between 12:30-2:30 to help families get the right help for them. This is a completely free service that we can offer as a small, independent pharmacy. Anyone can book an appointment (you don’t need to be a GBP client) so please give us a call to reserve your spot (9339 3696) and spread the word. We all deserve to live our best life.
24.01.2022 Last week we implemented some changes and I thought I’d give you an update on how it’s going. It’s also an opportunity to let you know we are CLOSED ON GOOD FRIDAY ONLY. Now we have 3 separate teams who don’t work together. This is to protect us as much as you, but we miss each other a lot! We have a Zoom meeting every Sunday night to check we’re still all OK and so far so good If one team goes down, the others step up so we can stay open to keep serving you. SECURITY Entra...Continue reading
21.01.2022 Gerald Burns Pharmacy was the first dementia friendly pharmacy in Australia, which we’re incredibly proud of. Dementia will soon overtake cardiovascular disease as the leading cause of death here... it already has in the UK. You or someone you love will be affected by dementia in your lifetime and we’re determined to make life easier for those who are affected. On Thursdays between 12:30-2:30pm we have a Dementia Navigator in the pharmacy who is there to help you understand what’s out there. It’s an incredibly invaluable service that only costs you your time and helps to keep you where you want to be, at home. Call us for an appointment if you’re interested.
20.01.2022 GERALD BURNS PHARMACY UPDATE. From Monday the 18th May we’ll be going back to our normal trading hours of 8am -8pm Monday to Saturday and 11am - 5pm on Sunday and PHs. We’re so excited about this! It’s been a difficult six weeks but we felt changing into three teams was the most effective way to keep us all safe to continue serving our community. I still believe it was the right decision at the time. Navigating stock shortages has been a nightmare but we’ve been able to fill ...most of our orders now. Price gouging has been rife and we’ve tried our hardest not to encourage this by refusing to support those suppliers. Is it over? No way. Medication shortages will still be a problem as generics are made all over the world. We still need to continue to keep a safe distance from others and wash our hands well. I’ve been able to find a WA supplier of hand sanitiser and have provided some to each tenant in Hawaiian’s Melville so you’ll feel safe wherever you go. I understand many people, especially our most vulnerable, will want to continue to stay at home, so we’ll continue to provide a free daily delivery service to them for as long as we can. Thank you to the 99% of people who have shown us incredible support throughout this experience. My staff have been exceptional - every day there were changes, updates and new problems which they handled with extraordinary professionalism. I’m so proud of them and I can’t wait to work with the whole crew again. Amanda Gerald Burns Pharmacy
19.01.2022 Wow! Good old vitamin C makes the headlines again. An interesting read if you know someone who has a diagnosis of diabetes. (Go for the buffered vitamin C which is less likely to irritate the gut.)
18.01.2022 Meet our friend Mel, an amazing Mum who loves running for fun and is brave enough to talk about her experience with stress incontinence. Don’t buy into the It’s only LBL (light bladder leakage)- a term created by continence pad manufacturers. We can refer you to women continence physiotherapists who will assess what’s going on and give you an action plan. You have the power! Just ask one of our exclusively female pharmacists and you’ll be dancing without crossing your fingers in no time
17.01.2022 Kristen and I have organised a workshop for this Friday on Gut Health at Heathcote in Applecross. I’ll be talking about the magic of your microbiome and what you can do to support diversity in your gut. No prior knowledge is required, just a curious mind and please don’t have lunch - there will be plenty of delicious nutrient-dense foods to keep you going! I can’t wait to see you there
16.01.2022 Love this article. Long may the little independent pharmacy, the health hub of the community, thrive. We do so much more than stick labels on boxes @suedunlevy * free home delivery service for when you’re too sick to come to us * three pharmacists on duty so you can always have a private chat to one of us, without an appointment ... * two diabetes educators (that’s two extra years of study) on staff to help you manage your diabetes * prescription management service so you never lose a prescription again & we can help you if you run out of medication * blood pressure & cholesterol checks, INR monitoring, COPD and heart health checks * we can give you vaccines too - flu, whooping cough, tetanus, diphtheria, measles, mumps, rubella & meningococcal * provide a dose administration aid (Webster-pak) so you can stay at home, where you want to be * participate in projects that actually help the community, like Kim our Dementia Navigator ...but most importantly, we do it for the beautiful people we care about. We’re all about relationships and here for the long term looking after the people who look after us.
12.01.2022 We have just had the craziest fortnight at Gerald Burns Pharmacy, ever, and it doesn’t look like it’s slowing down. My staff have been shouted at, verbally abused and accused of hiding stock (we’re not!). We understand everyone is scared and fear can look a lot like aggression but please be kind. I’m confident we’ll get through this but those who are flippant about contracting COVID-19 really do put others at risk of serious consequences. ... Look after yourself and your family first but consider those around you too. Now is the time for our community to shine. Let your neighbours know if you’re prepared to help them, should they need it. Reach out, even if you’ve never met them before. 85% of older people don’t know their neighbours and wouldn’t feel comfortable contacting them in a crisis (‘The Australian Loneliness Report’, 2018). Let’s change this. Let’s be radically different and show others we care about our community too. We’ll be offering those self-isolating with a confirmed diagnosis a delivery service to ensure they get medication but it’s going to be tricky. One staff member on a 15 minute delivery means 10 others will have to wait to be served. (In case you’re wondering, there is no financial support from the government to facilitate this right now, nor talk of it, but we feel it’s the right thing to do.) I would love to be a part of a coordinated group where people who can, help deliver to those in need. There is currently a shortage of many products - hand sanitisers, masks, rubbing alcohol, paracetamol, salbutamol - which we have all on back order, so as soon as it’s in we can supply to those who are in need. We’re trying to look after our community first too. Next week, please smile more, be kind and think about what else you can do to help others. I’m happy to listen to all suggestions of what we can do at work too even though we’re already stretched. And thank you to the fabulous people who have asked if we’re OK. So far so good! #geraldburnspharmacy #knowyourpharmacist #communityiseverything #wevegotthis
11.01.2022 We had a visit from Channel 9 this morning who wanted to know more about our volunteer brigade. Remember, if you need to self-isolate, we’ve got you covered. Just call us on 9339 3696 and we’ll arrange for all your pharmaceutical needs to arrive at your doorstep. #washyourhands... #connectthecommunity #coronavirus #wevegotthis See more
11.01.2022 If you love coconut yoghurt but don’t love buying it all the time, have a go at making it yourself with the Kultured Wellness Coconut Yoghurt Starter. As Kirsty demonstrates, it’s so easy and lasts for ages. Flavour it afterwards so you can use it in a curry or dip or with vanilla or berries for breakfast. We have all the Kultured Wellness cultures at Gerald Burns Pharmacy. Even the new Diversity Dough which is a grain-free sourdough starter. #kulturedwellness... #loveyourgut #geraldburnspharmacyhasculture See more
09.01.2022 Do you still need a flu vaccine? After desperate shortages a few weeks ago, Gerald Burns Pharmacy now has stock of both under and over 65yrs flu vaccines. To minimise your risk, we’ll ask you the pre-screening questions before you come in, wear PPE if it makes you feel more comfortable, see you in our private consult room and give you a voucher for a coffee at Cibo Sana next door so we can keep you close while supporting another small local business. You’ll be given a record... of the immunisation (which some workplaces and aged care facilities now require) and the details are entered on the Australian Immunisation Register so all healthcare providers in your life can see it. For some of us, having a flu vaccine means we can see Mum again so please, no anti-vaxxing comments. I’d really like to try and look after my community first, so if you’re a City of Melville local and still need a flu shot, give us a call on 9339 3696 and we’ll find a time that suits us both. If you’re working business hours, Rosie is happy to see you this Saturday between 12-2 but please book an appointment to avoid missing out. If you have any queries, please ask below or PM me. Stay safe and keep washing your hands - we’re doing an awesome job so far! Amanda
09.01.2022 We’re trying our absolute best right now, in incredibly difficult circumstances. As Coles have opened an hour earlier (7am), so are we and we’ll close an hour earlier at 7pm. Today some paracetamol has trickled in but hand sanitisers, salbutamol inhalers and face masks are still out. (Ask to go on our waiting list if you’re in desperate need)... In the event that you’re self-isolating and need of medication, please give us a call on 9339 3696 and one of our fantastic, resilient staff will arrange for a volunteer to help you. #tryingourbest #pleasebekind #communityfirst
08.01.2022 Join us for an insightful brunch and learn this Thursday and learn what an essential fat is, where they come from and the difference between and omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. Love to see you there! Book your tickets at https://www.trybooking.com/BISGX
08.01.2022 We’ve had a pretty exciting week at work. At the beginning of this year, before we could have possibly imagined COVID’s impact, we started on a project to connect our older patients with some younger ones, inspired by ABC’s ‘Old People’s Home for 4 Year Olds’. In Bicton we have twice the Australian average number of older people living at home, alone, with mobility issues. Up to 85% don’t know their neighbours and would not ask for help in an emergency. Social isolation is s...omething they’ve lived with for many years, not just 2020. The elders of our community truly have had the most incredible lives and it’s been such a joy for them to recount this with their special pen pal. From the other side, the children have learnt about letter-writing skills, life without the internet, building relationships through common experiences and how to explain TikTok to a 92 yr old. To respect the privacy and confidentiality of both parties, Gerald Burns Pharmacy has been the postie, passing the letters backwards and forwards. When times got tough in April and May, we hand-delivered the letters under their doormat. You can imagine what this meant during such a stressful time. Tahlia’s done all the grunt work, making the project come to life and as a result has received an insane amount of media attention. (There’s a rumour of an award - sssshhhhh!) She’s still a little camera-shy but next time you see her, congratulate her. It’s been a really lovely way to finish a difficult intern year. #oldpeopleshomefor4yearolds #penpalsforlife #geraldburnspharmacy #dementiaaustralia #melvillecity #hawaiiansmelville
08.01.2022 Great news! From today we can administer this year’s flu vaccine from 10 year olds up. Before you had to be over 18, so this saves the need of getting a script from your GP, making an appointment, getting it dispensed from us and going back to the GP surgery for administration. New stock is slowly trickling in, so if you’re on our waiting list, expect a phone call soon! Want to go on our waiting list? Call 9339 3696 and give us your details today ... https://thewest.com.au//wa-pharmacies-told-to-give-flu-vac
07.01.2022 Our PenPal project has truly been the highlight of 2020. I can’t tell you the joy we get from delivering letters to our older patients. When I gave one to a customer last week, she was so excited she said, ‘I was just about to do my weekly shopping but now I’m going to go home to read this with a cuppa instead. Thank you so much!’... If you’d like to be a part of the 2021 PenPal project, please let us know.
06.01.2022 GERALD BURNS PHARMACY change in OPENING HOURS from Monday the 30th March 2020. This week we’ve had two staff leave as they feel unsafe to keep working and another two take stress leave. At the intensity we’ve worked over the last four weeks, it’s completely unsustainable - we’re all burnt out, exhausted and so, so tired . My primary instinct as their boss is to protect my workers which has been extremely difficult as I’ve waited for leadership from key organisations to gu...Continue reading
06.01.2022 Love to see you at Matters of Taste Cooking School on Saturday afternoon if you’re interested to learn more about Gut Health. The picnic we’ll be making and eating was created from Gabi’s 21st birthday picnic in Kings Park for 40 and we had vegans, low-FODMAPs, gluten-free, nut allergies and LCHF all attending. Cooking for others with food sensitivities can be sensational too. It just needs a bit of planning. It’s going to be a great afternoon
06.01.2022 Eek! Tomorrow I’m doing a live interview with Tracey Cotterell from Matters of Taste Cooking School, talking about what I’ve been working hard on....becoming a diabetes educator. Love you to join us if you can
05.01.2022 We have had hundreds, no thousands, of requests for hand sanitisers over the last few weeks. AQIUM is manufactured in Australia and are making as much as they can but short supply is affecting us all. Hand washing is more effective than hand sanitisers (and better for your skin). But you need to do it properly. Use any soap, water and sing ‘Happy Birthday’ twice - in this time you’ll do a great job. Dry your hands well and you’re good to go!... DIY HAND SANITISER GEL If you don’t have any soap or water, you can make your own with aloe vera gel and vodka in the proportions of 1:2. So a third of a cup of gel to two thirds of a cup of vodka - it’s not as strong an antiviral but better than nothing. Some tea tree oil might help it smell a bit better too. Try not to panic. This raises your cortisol levels and makes you more susceptible to viral infections. Any questions, please ask us. All staff have had a specialised training on COVID-19 coronavirus, so we’re ready!
01.01.2022 Sometimes going to the shops becomes overwhelming but this is especially so when your senses are heightened. Great work by our shopping centre for turning the volume and the lights down every Tuesday.
