24.01.2022 Solid turnout this morning. Plenty of people have been signing back up to our group classes after a little winter hiatus. But we're capping each class at 12 people to allow for quality coaching, social distancing & efficiency on equipment. So if you've been sitting on the fence about joining, you might want to take action. ... Once the classes are full, they're full. #yamba #gym #grouptraining #fitness #strength #summer #spring

20.01.2022 So where are we at with body image and conversation? Is it a 100% taboo subject? I mean it seems to be publicly acceptable to congratulate someone on losing weight, it's even celebrated. ... But if the fat is put on, it's a taboo subject. You're an arsehole for calling someone out for being overfat, but in the same breath you're 'looking out for someone's health' if they are underweight. Having spent the last decade training people and dealing with bodyfat conversations daily, I'm going to throw my 'opinion' into the mix. 1. If you aren't a health professional, then just leave it alone. You don't need to congratulate someone on their weight loss, nor do you need to give unwarranted advice on why someone should eat more or less. There is significant psychological shit surrounding obesity and anorexia. And just a bit of fat above/below optimally healthy isn't a big deal for you to be worrying about. So just leave it be. 2. If you are someone who has excess bodyfat, then it really is up to you to find the water bucket and drink from it. Everyone knows that being overfat is unhealthy. So is underweight. So is smoking. So is excess alcohol consumption (at any age). Etc. But the saying is ridiculously true - you can lead a horse to water but can't make it drink. You don't need to 'get fitter' to go to a gym, or 'start eating healthy' before getting nutrition advice. LET THE COACHES, COACH YOU. It's like cleaning your house before the cleaner arrives. WTF? 3. Personal Trainers, Nutritionists, Dietitians all have the same goal in common. For the average punter to live a long happy healthy life. Some people are more qualified than others to give specific advice, so if you're suffering medical conditions along with bodyfat issues, then best go via your doctor and onto a Dietitian/Nutritionist for starters. PT's should only provide general health eating advice. Some delve outside that scope of practice, but it also depends on their personal education. I know a lot of PT's who are better at nutrition coaching than a lot of Dietitians/Nutritionists I've met. 4. If your friend/family member needs help, then BE the example. If you think that it is that important, then everything you think you should say, you should be also doing. People are significantly more likely to do things 'with' you rather than just because you told them to. 5. Last but not least, just say nothing. It's not necessary. If they look nice because they've dropped a couple of belt sizes, then just tell them they look nice. No need every to say "Oh look at you, you've lost weight". Just the same as saying "Oh look, you're pregnant!"....when they're not. ;-)

20.01.2022 Join us tonight at 530pm for our #Strength #Circuit. Beginners welcome & encouraged to attend. If you're here in #Yamba on holidays, we'd love to have you join us as well.

20.01.2022 This morning was a PERFECT example of what The Gym Yamba provides. There were 5 women in for the 930am class. (And yes, we train blokes as well) Their ages are 19, 38, 50 & 66. But they ALL are able to do the same training, bar a few variations I made for Di because she can't run and jump. ... This is what we do. ALWAYS. I'll admit our training won't be everyone's cup of tea, but if you want to TRAIN moreso than EXERCISE, then best you come and give us a try. We also offer a 30 Day Trial if you're undecided. #gym #yamba #grouptraining #totalbody #bootcamp #teamtraining #strong #fitness

19.01.2022 Good morning legends! Enjoy your weekend. #yamba #sunrise

19.01.2022 Saying farewell to these two legends this week. They've been super supportive and wonderful members of The Gym Yamba Family over the past 3 years. But the life of a 'contract worker' calls, and they're off to Orange. We wish Martenette & Ben all the best with their new adventure and thank them so very much for their ongoing support. ... We'll definitely miss you two! See more

19.01.2022 Good morning, Legends! Have a cracker of a day. #yamba #sunrise #gymwithaview

16.01.2022 Here are some truths: - I'm not your typical 'gym junkie'. It's not my favourite thing to do. Getting barrelled out GP with my mates far surpasses it. - I don't train as often as I'd prefer. Prob only 2-3x/week. - My discipline & consistency around my diet needs work. I don't mind a burger & couple scotch's & dessert over the weekend. ... BUT - I do eat a pretty consistent protein & fruit/veges diet. Prob 16/21 meals are fairly spot on. - I cover 7-8000 steps per day (just in the gym) plus ancillary lifting with moving weights around, doing demo reps, etc. So why would a guy who's not a gym junkie open a gym? Because I knew I could provide a fun, positive, encouraging and challenging training space that was unlike the vast majority of gyms that only care about taking your money. To cater for people like myself, who use the gym moreso to support their life, not become their life. And, to provide a sheltered and supportive space for people like @emmerson__ Nothing more satisfying than seeing a client achieve their first proper toe pushup. Legend Em! #gym #yamba #fitness #strong #train4life #bebetterthanyesterday

14.01.2022 Few things to say here. 1. Andrea will probably bash me for posting this. 2. That was the last 5 reps of 20. 3. No way was she able to do that 12 weeks ago when she started. A static plank was tough enough 4. Before this, she also did 5 rounds of 10 reps - box squat 45kg, trap deadlift 60kg, & 25kg overhead press ... 5. She's an amazing person & client. We have great chats, solve life's problems & She's always brutally honest BUT 100% committed to doing the work. #modelclient And we haven't even really talked about nutrition, fat loss, what her scale weight is, etc. She's here to train so she can row the surfboat without pain. So that's what we're focusing on. #gym #yamba #localsrule #strength #yambaslsc #dothework

13.01.2022 IT'S BACK!!! 30 DAY HARDCORE CHALLENGE This is for anyone to do, even if you don't train with us here at The Gym Yamba, just join the group and follow the basic principles of what is involved. It's just 30 Days of being a more 'Hardcore' version of yourself around Exercise, Nutrition, Health, Sleep, etc.... But the ONLY clinch, is.....IT STARTS TOMORROW. So just make a decision and rip right in. TUESDAY 1ST SEPTEMBER. #spring #30dayhardcorechallenge #thegymyamba #september https://www.facebook.com/groups/278542432525318/

12.01.2022 If you know me, have worked with me in the Army and/or have ever trained with me at @thegymyamba you'll know that #RUOK day is EVERY day under my watch. It's never just a token single day of the year. My gym is your gym. ... My time is your time. My shoulder is your shoulder. I'm not a stranger; I'm your mate.

12.01.2022 Fitness Passport Holders We support the use of FP in our facility and there is no charge for access to our gym facility to use the training equipment. "But why do you charge extra for classes?" ... For the very same reason that swim coaching at any pool is most likely not included with your free pool access. It is a coaching service that has a higher level of value than basic facility access. If you are a FP holder and you'd like to give our classes a try, then DM us and we'll provide you with a FREE week of training. So you then know what you're missing out on ;-) Regards Matty

12.01.2022 "I need to get fit first before I come to the gym" The Gym Yamba isn't a place that requires a 'starting point' in order to attend. We don't require you to 'pass a test' to start. It's just a place where we help you develop whatever physiological adaptations you choose to. ... Whether it's to get stronger / Lose weight / Increase your fitness / Be more confident within yourself / Feel less anxious about exercise It doesn't matter. Our purpose is to help you on your journey of ever improving physical health.

11.01.2022 BONE DENSITY IN PRE/POST MENOPAUSAL WOMEN The evidence to support strength training to support bone density is fairly signficant, and I've attached a study here for your perusal if you are interested in the signficant changes strength training WILL have on your bone density, cardiovascular fitness, muscular strength and blood quality. But what I hear often is "But I don't like lifting weights at my age (50ish), and think yoga is better for me"... Having a personal preference for enjoyment in your exercise is definitely a key indicator to you actually doing something at all. If you don't like it, usually you won't stick to it. But how many people really like brushing their teeth, eating vegetables or even going to work each day? They're tolerable, but definitely not most people's 'first choice' for daily enjoyment. Yoga - I love what it provides. It's perfect for improving and maintaining your movement range, focusing on your breathing, and managing any life stressors by taking some 'time-out' and just moving gently. But it does not improve your strength, bone density (it needs impact & strain to improve it), or cardiovascular fitness. They are all the things that significantly decrease, ESPECIALLY AT MENOPAUSE. In the study attached, after 2 years of exercise, bone density improved by about 0.5-1.0% in the lumbar (low back), proximal femur (upper leg), proximal humerus (upper arm), COMPARED to a 2% DECREASE in those who didn't train - in ONLY 2 years of gym training 2x/week plus 2 home sessions. They also all increased their strength by 30% in a range of tested exercises. If you lose 2% doing nothing for 2 years, but strength training only adds 0.5%, you're really setting yourself up for some possible issues down the track. The key is consistently doing it. Make it your routine. Recently, just locally, quite a few women have suffered fractures that most likely would have been avoided had they been training in a gym. It's difficult to realise and give credit to strength training when you don't understand the mechanisms "Oh I only broke it because I fell / stepped weird / was goofing off / etc" but when you have knowledge of HOW muscles act on bones it's very easy to predict. What we do at the gym trains balance, strength and coordination which improves the ability to break a fall without injury. So my professional suggestion is this: 2x Gym Sessions per week 1-2x Yoga sessions per week. 10000 steps per day. You don't need 'motivation' to train when you understand the benefits it provides. Just like you don't need motivation to brush your teeth after eating your green vegetables. You do it because it BENEFITS your life. If you're interested in what we do, we are currently running a 30 Day Trial for $99. - You get 2x Personal Training sessions. - Unlimited Group Training - Unlimited Gym Access. Please Message us for more details or follow the link below to book in a call. www.the-gym.net.au/30-day-trial Cheers Matty :-)

11.01.2022 I BELIEVE (it's long, so pull up a chair) For a long time I've followed the 'fitness industry' trend and offered Fat Loss Challenges and Muscle Building Transformations with the hope I was achieving what I got into this industry for in the first place. But I was wrong........Very wrong....Continue reading

11.01.2022 So proud to see these two local indigenous lads graduate yesterday at 1RTB Kapooka. They started their training in the gym last year for the @lowerclarencemagpies_official 2020 season. Then they both came in one day and said they had applied for the Army. So we changed up their training and got them prepped for Kapooka. They're now officially Australian Army Soldiers. ... Congrats @benjaminmw_ & @charlescharlton_ Proud of you boys! @ Kapooka - 1RTB See more

09.01.2022 **ATTENTION YAMBA TOURISTS** Due to the current COVID outbreak in Sydney, we are not permitting casual gym access to anyone from the Greater Sydney Region. If you know me, you'll know it guts me to put restrictions in place. I really love having visitors and meeting new people. We regularly have the same visitors each year and it's great to catch up with them all. ... But our priority is to looking after our members and being able to remain open indefinitely. Thank so very much for your understanding. Regards, Matty #sydney #northernbeaches #yamba #gym #fitness #greatersydney

07.01.2022 Sometimes life gets a bit hectic, gym gets pushed aside and a few beers on a Friday night is what the Dr ordered. It's what will be on my menu tonight anyway. Been a big week! I was going to train today, but I've been flat out all day getting a new gym program organised plus liaising with a few tradies doing some work on our home. So I've let it go and will rip into it tomorrow. ... It's OK though, because we aren't robots. We're humans. The body adapts to what you do CONSISTENTLY and with EFFORT. So if that's & , with an occasional visit then you know what the result of that is. But if you're consistently (don't read 'constantly' here) hitting with the occasional then, as you can imagine, you'll be much better off. Have a RAD weekend! Matty Drop a comment below with one thing you're going to do this weekend to recharge/relax.

02.01.2022 Do you look at this and think it would be too difficult for you? That you'd need to be fitter to do it? Or possibly too easy and that doing group training is just for girls? ... Let me show you how we adjust our programs to suit ALL people. Beginner - Someone who has never trained before, or hasn't got a long time. You would do this just at bodyweight (no weights added). And based on my assessment of you, maybe even just sitting on a bench/chair and standing again. And we may even reduce the reps as well. Intermediate - Someone who has regularly exercised but isn't overly strong and/or fit. You'd most likely do a goblet squat or even a light barbell squat variation (like they do in a pump class). Weight would be gauged on my assessment of you. Advanced - You train regularly and have experience with weights. Can probably squat around your bodyweight on a barbell. We'd adjust the weight so that the 12 reps was challenging but leaving you with about 3 reps in reserve. This is only a basic example, but you can see the gross variations available. With over 12 years programming & coaching soldiers to junior athletes to first time exercisers through to advanced athletes I've been able to instantly apply regressed or progressed variations to our programs to suit all types of people who train with us. If you think you'd be interested to fit into our group training sessions but don't want to commit to something right away, then give our 30 Day Trial a go. 01.01.2022 Well that's a wrap for 2020. We've all experienced this year very differently but also, with a lot similarities. Being forced to shut for 89 days was initially a tough gig. ... But things really worked well for us and we were able to take a much needed break and work ON the business, do a few reno's and reassess what we're providing the #Yamba community. All in all, 2020 was a small step backwards followed by a huge step forward. But the biggest reason for this post is to show our appreciation, thanks and gratitude to our GYM YAMBA FAMILY MEMBERS, especially those who continued to support us during & post lockdown. You're all legends, and we love you all very much. We're really looking forward to the next 365 days & what this crazy world is going to hurl in our direction. And we hope you, if you haven't yet, will join our family in the New Year. Be good champions. And if you can't, don't let anyone record you. Matty, April & Mavvy
