25.01.2022 Sometimes we stay so focused on our babies and caring for them, that we can be unaware of the damage we are doing to our own bodies. Some tips from an OT on how to lift your baby and look after yourself in the process: * Maintain your lower back curve - it should go slightly in, not out. * Get in close to your baby so you don't leave all the weight and maneuvering to the fingers and hands. ... * Bend knees and hips together (a good squat) or consider kneeling on one leg. * Use your breathing and pelvic floor. It doesn't require any extra time.... It is just a helpful habit that may protect you from injury. A few reminders and a bit of intention and you're on your way. Remember, they keep growing and putting on weight, let's get into some good habits now. Stay safe

20.01.2022 Meet the OT.... My name is Christine and I am an Occupational Therapist, Hand Therapist and mother to 3 young children. My passion is to help pregnant women and mothers of all ages enjoy the journey of motherhood by keeping them strong, safe from injury, educated and empowered for their roles.... In practice, I have come across women struggling through pregnancy and parenthood with hand and upper limb pain and weakness in particular. I am aware that many women either don’t know there are options for them, or they are unable to access help for so many reasons and are missed and ‘fall through the cracks’ of the system. My goal in this case is to educate women and teach them how to protect, rehabilitate, and strengthen their hands and arms and bodies so they can achieve their goals with confidence in their season of life. My professional qualifications and experience as an OT and Hand Therapist allow me to provide good quality information and treatment/interventions based on the evidence. I am excited to offer pregnancy massage, breastfeeding support, hand therapy (including custom splinting), ergonomics, and training in goal setting, habits, energy conservation, and relaxation, as well as home assessments within my practice. Some personal things about me: I am a committed Christian, I am learning the cello, I love learning about permaculture, I am a homeschool mum and I love mango and banana smoothies.

20.01.2022 We take them for granted...

15.01.2022 New Mothers (and sometimes other child carers) are prone to developing a condition of the thumb/wrist called deQuervain's Tenosynovitis/Syndrome. It can make lifting and caring for a new baby very painful and difficult. Here is a blog post if you are interested in finding out more on what it is and what can be done.

03.01.2022 Ergonomic assessments mostly occur within the workplace... but motherhood is work too. You have your own special workplace and environments... Sometimes little changes can make the world of difference in alleviating pain and protecting from injury. Keep safe.... so you can be well set-up to care for your little ones and focus on what's important without being at risk injury big or small.

01.01.2022 Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is often misunderstood. It actually isn't defined as cramping in the hands or even wrist pain. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is when there is compression of the median nerve inside the 'carpal tunnel' which is a pathway that sits at the base of your palm. Sometimes extra fluid during pregnancy can be a main cause of this compression but so can overuse of the hands and wrist, as well as wrist positioning at night time.... The main symptoms of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome are tingling and numbness in the thumb, index, middle and half of the ring finger. Pain can come later in the fingers, hand and wrist if nothing is done to relieve it. You can go to my website to read a great article on Carpal Tunnel Syndrome in Pregnancy as well as an article on Reducing swelling in the hands during Pregnancy. If you think you may have Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, pregnant or not, feel free to make an appointment. Online consultations are also available. Take care ;)

01.01.2022 It is OT Week once again! It was lovely to meet some local Occupational Therapists yesterday for breakfast. It is such an awesome profession and there is a great bunch in our town. If you don't know what it Occupational Therapy is, well....it can be hard to define because it can cover so much ground across many fields, but here is a definition I wrote last year in an attempt to explain what OT is! Hope it is helpful.
