20.01.2022 Please go and get your flu vaccines! So far 55 babies in Victoria have been infected. We are so lucky to be able to reduce our risk of contracting influenza. The injection isn’t as dramatic as my daughter made it seem...

20.01.2022 I’ll be interested to watch this- we definitely need to raise awareness about mother/infant mental health. Too much suffering goes unnoticed. I hope this documentary helps people to recognize the signs of postnatal depression, anxiety and psychosis much earlier, and to seek help from their GP

19.01.2022 Breaking news: Going to sleep on either side in late pregnancy more than halves stillbirth risk. An international study co-funded by Red Nose Australia released... today confirms that going to sleep on either side in the last three months of pregnancy, can more than halve the risk of stillbirth. Neonatologist Dr Adrienne Gordon from The University of Sydney, who led the Australian component of the study, said it confirms that the risk of stillbirth associated with going to sleep on the back applies to all pregnant women in the last trimester. This is a huge breakthrough for the prevention of stillbirth, which remains one of the greatest challenges in modern obstetric practice, Dr Gordon said. Stillbirth is a national tragedy, which has devastating and far reaching psychosocial impacts on women, families, caregivers and communities; as well as a wide-ranging economic impact on our health system and society. But we are now able to tell pregnant women is that we know that going to sleep on their side halves the risk of stillbirth, and sleeping on their side is something they can easily do at home. This has the potential to save hundreds of babies a year. Key findings: Going to sleep lying on your back from 28 weeks of pregnancy increases the risk of stillbirth by 2.6 times This heightened risk occurred regardless of other known risk factors for stillbirth Going to sleep on the back adds to other stillbirth risk factors, for example a baby who is growing poorly in the womb. Putting the research into practice at home: - This is easy to do! Simply settle to sleep on either side both left and right sides are equally safe - Make sure you are on your side for naps as well as longer sleeps - If you wake up and you are on your back don’t panic! Simply settle back to sleep on to your side Visit www.rednose.com.au for more safe pregnancy information.

18.01.2022 It’s Sleep Awareness Week! No-one is more aware of the importance of a good night’s sleep than we are!! Chronic sleep deprivation can affect every aspect of your life and it’s importance is usually underestimated. At The Happy Baby Clinic we help you and your baby to regain the sleep you need! www.thehappybabyclinic.com.au... Research suggests that sleep helps learning and memory in two distinct ways. First, a sleep-deprived person cannot focus attention optimally and therefore cannot learn efficiently. Second, sleep itself has a role in the consolidation of memory, which is essential for learning new information. Memory consolidation takes place during sleep through the strengthening of the neural connections that form our memories. Being tired to the point of fatigue or exhaustion means that we are less likely to perform well. Neurons do not fire optimally, muscles are not rested, and the body’s organ systems are not synchronized. Lapses in focus from sleep deprivation can even result in accidents or injury. Low-quality sleep and sleep deprivation also negatively impact mood, which has consequences for learning. Alterations in mood affect our ability to acquire new information and subsequently to remember that information. Although chronic sleep deprivation affects different individuals in a variety of ways (and the effects are not entirely known), it is clear that a good night’s rest has a strong impact on learning and memory. 14.01.2022 Have you heard about ParentWorks? ParentWorks is a free online program for Australian parents and caregivers of children 2 to 16. It provides evidence-based par...enting strategies to improve parenting skills, confidence and child behaviour. This means that the strategies in the program have been tested and found to work. Parents and caregivers may find this program helpful for: Managing challenging child behaviours such as tantrums, aggression, noncompliance, inattentive or hyperactive behaviour, sibling conflict, getting ready for school and/or bed, and behaviours outside the home, such as problems in the supermarket, increasing their confidence in parenting and working as a team with their partner. ParentWorks involves 5 to 8 ‘modules’ to watch one per week. Each module only takes about 20 to 30 minutes of your time, and involves videos with practical information and activities. You can work through the program in your own time and at your own pace. The program takes time and effort, but the rewards will be worth it. Parentworks is currently available as part of a research study run by Professor Mark Dadds. For more information see the link below.

04.01.2022 Here’s an important warning... As you all know, I recommend covering the pram with a light muslin wrap when your baby is sleeping, to help the transition between sleep cycles. But this article shows how important it is to keep our babies out of direct sunlight on warm days- the temperature inside the pram can rise extremely quickly. Good to be aware of!
