25.01.2022 One year ago today.... Last January we sat under the thickest blanket of smoke for weeks. The heat was unreal and our place was bone dry and dusty. It was an eerie start to the New Year, not far from us we had friends and families losing their farms and homes to bushfires What a difference 12 months make....

24.01.2022 IT’S HOT I haven’t really missed collecting eggs in 40 degree heat! The girls have handled their first hot weekend well, we’ve sat around the pool, dipping our toes in and sipping refreshments

21.01.2022 Re-using Cartons We get a lot of questions about this! We would love to but we CAN’T re-use cartons. It’s against the NSW food safety regulations. ... Egg cartons are handy for plenty of things around the home though! We use ours in the bottom of the veggie boxes and for growing seedlings. They are also great to use as paint tins if you’ve got little ones who love to paint! We hope you’re enjoying your long weekend!

14.01.2022 EGG SHORTAGE What’s that old saying about the best laid plans...... Well at The Happy Hens Eggs we have the best laid eggs....but just not enough of them! ... 2020 has been a rollercoaster! It has been so tough to predict how many eggs we will need each week to supply our customers. At one point a lot of our clients had to close their doors overnight due to Covid restrictions and we were left with an oversupply of eggs so we sold off a portion of our flock. Now we are all getting back to normal and we are selling out of eggs! Easy fix right, just buy some more hens? Easier said than done, our hens are ordered 6 months in advance! And the downside of free range/pastured hens? While they are free to roam and live their best lives, they are affected by the heat and cold and daylight! This recent heat has affected our hens lay rate in our oldest flock and we are seeing more thinner shelled eggs from them. So we are doing our best to juggle orders to make sure everyone gets their Happy Hens Eggs! Our new flock have started laying and will kick into top gear over the next couple of weeks. Hopefully you’ve enjoyed this little insight into the ups & downs of free range egg farming and we cannot thank you enough for your support! The Happy Hens Eggs team

05.01.2022 Time to get organized for Christmas!

05.01.2022 Wow! It's been 12 months since we were invited to be a part of the Wodonga Local Food Network event where I had to get up and speak to a room of 100 people I also met the lovely Costa! I had been so unwell leading up to this event and had come out of hospital just in time to attend. I was blaming the antibiotics for making me even more unwell and then realised I was pregnant with Hugh

05.01.2022 STORY TIME When I started The Happy Hens Eggs I was still working at my real job, teaching Animal Studies & Veterinary Nursing at a Victorian Tafe. I would come home from work and every night around 8pm until midnight I would be washing and packing eggs. I hand cut and individually stuck labels on all of our egg cartons. ... After 12 months we had finally sold enough eggs to justify the expense of buying cartons with labels already stuck on! It was like Christmas This week our cute little half dozens will be making an appearance at the upcoming Farmer’s Market on Sunday so I am back cutting and sticking labels I have since left my teaching job to focus solely on The Happy Hens Eggs so it is quite nice to be doing this job in daylight hours!
