25.01.2022 Due to restrictions imposed as a result of the current pandemic all marches associated with 2020 ANZAC Day ceremonies across Australia have been cancelled and memorial services closed to the public. Thankfully, the son of a Vietnam war veteran, Justin Wilbur has launched an app "Anzac Day 2020" and is also behind the movement calling on Australians to continue the dawn service tradition privately. Therefore all are encouraged to participate at the end of your driveways or on ...your balconies in a national minute's silence at dawn (6:00am). At 6:00am on Saturday 25 April the application will display a single burning candle and contains either a live broadcast of the National Service or a pre-recorded short recitation of The Ode, The Last Post, a minute of silence and Reveille. The application is free as follows, on Android at - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details and Apple at - https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/anzac-day-2020/id1508625222 The Department of Veteran's Affairs is encouraging Australians to take a minute of personal reflection at 11.30am, which is 4.30am at Gallipoli. Lest We Forget!

Incredibly he survived the crash, and five days in the bush but the crash site has remained a mystery until now. Untouched for 76 years the wreckage was recently located about 110 kms south of Darwin in Litchfield National Park. The remains of the Spitfire have been gif...ted by the RAAF to the Northern Territory Government. Follow the accompanying link for a comprehensive account.

13.01.2022 THE ARGUS SEPTEMBER 3 1926. "Yesterday morning the hulk of the old iron-clad Cerberus was towed from her berth at the Williamstown pier, where everything of value had been removed from her, and sunk off the Black Rock jetty to form a breakwater for the yachts and fishing boats. ....."

13.01.2022 Friends of the Cerberus Inc. said - This short film includes a depiction of the Confederate and Union Ironclads Merrimack/Virginia and Monitor in their historic clash during the Battle of Hampton Roads 8 & 9 March 1862. Just five and a half years later the Breastwork Monitor Cerberus was laid down at Jarrow UK for the colony of Victoria. She featured vastly improved sea-keeping qualities together with many advanced innovations that would prove invaluable to the future devel...opment of both surface and submarine warships well into the next century. (Background - USS Merrimack was a Union steam frigate burned and sunk in dock 20 April 1861 then raised by the Confederacy and converted into the casemate ironclad CSS Virginia). With traditional Monitors still in use by today's navies time has shown that their most notable feature, the 'monitor deck' (low free-board) which so enhanced the original Monitors' capabilities, is still prominent. In fact without it, a ship isn't really a 'monitor' at all despite a sometimes loose application of the term.

11.01.2022 A teaser for ‘the locals’.

11.01.2022 BILL GATES JUST INVESTED IN LAB-GROWN PALM OIL TO SAVE THE RAINFOREST. Nearly chemically-identical to palm oil was grown in a lab using bioreactors. It function...s the same as the popular vegetable oil, but it’s nowhere near as destructive to the rainforest. Palm oil production is a major cause of deforestation in Indonesia. Global demand is destroying the rainforest habitat of endangered species, like the orangutan and the Sumatran rhino. Not only is it harmful to wildlife, but the industry is a threat to humanity too. Every year, palm oil deforestation emits around half a billion tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. We all can breathe a great sigh of relief if the 'oil' is a successful substitute. See more

05.01.2022 Recollections of the Queen Victoria Market in Queen St Melbourne Victoria (Australia) - Opened 20 Mar 1878 and still open ... for now. from John Toogood ... "This image brings back memories although I am not in this photo (I would have been much younger at that time). From the late 1950s through a good deal of the 1960s I was accompanying my dad to the Queen Victoria Market where he had a regular stall selling for growers across Melbourne's east and outer east regions includi...ng those districts centred around Blackburn, Doncaster and Pakenham Upper. If my memory serves me it was a Tuesday early morning ritual (during school holidays), woken before midnight to get ready and polish off a bowl of cereal, climb into the truck which dad had already loaded (usually during the preceding afternoon or early evening) then the drive to market from Blackburn. On arrival it was usually my first order of business to help by directing dad as he manoeuvred his truck into the stall (a tight squeeze as I recall, even with the smaller trucks early on), then we would unload and set up prior to 2:00am. The plan was always to beat other stall holders and any interstate or country Victoria drivers whose semi-trailers would block access for hours. Again trusting to my memory, which is not as sharp as it once was, after 2:00am (or 3:00am) was when those with early access (wholesalers/traders) would start coming through to check out the produce, make their selections, negotiate for the best deal and leave deposits to secure their orders etc. 'Lights up' was at 5:00am and that was when the 'fun' really started, although I do have a few stories I could tell from the pre lights-up period but I might frighten some of the readers. To loosely quote a not quite contemporary bard of sorts, these were the days 'when men were men, boys were boys and the women ate their young'."

02.01.2022 STATUS UPDATE from Friends of the Cerberus Inc.: We are breaking our self-imposed period of radio silence to provide this update specifically in response to que...ries received from our supporters. What is the current situation with the monitor former HMVS/HMAS Cerberus (later HMAS Platypus II) in relation to Bayside Council's stated intention that they will contract a monolithic infill of the historic warship with 4,000 tonnes of concrete? In answer, the following ..... Continue reading at - http://www.cerberus.com.au/cgi-bin/newsscript/newsscript.pl
